I grew up in a family where we were always around a vegetable garden. My great grandma had a huge garden, and when she no longer grew a garden my grandma (who raised me) started gardening again. (guess who got to do most all the labor) I really enjoyed watching those fruits and vegetables grow. I have recently gotten into gardening myself and am regretting not paying more attention to the things they tried to teach me. ...What I am saying is thank you so very much for the advice and the vid!
Great Videos! One thing that I would definitely suggest to homesteaders in my region (northern ontario canada) is growing an apple tree. We have two apple trees and they produce thousands of apples every year! Smaller than in they are in the stores but still...Way more than we could possibly eat. We make homemade applesauce with the less than perfect ones and barter the better ones. One of these days i'm going to buy a juicer and open up a apple juice business.
Thank you so much for making these videos, I love the way you do things -- it's so practical, you break it down and make things out of stuff I never would have thought about.
Episode idea I never see homesteaders discuss...
I'm in Georgia, the problem here isn't heating but COOLING -- gets hot and humid here and stays that way for months. A sleeping loft like you have would probably be out of the question, even with a fan sucking the heat out, it would be too hot to sleep or hang out there.
you are so luckyLamar! I have been looking and looking for some cheap land in BC, canada and am having no luck finding anything. But I will keep looking because I want to do what you are doing!
hey bud enjoy all your vids. what happened to the vid i want my life back. that was a greats song. if you happen to have an album or mp3 of your songs i would love to buy.
You're doing such a stellare job, thank you so much. Just purchased your $7 book which is excellent!!!!! All I need now is a small piece of land, difficult when you don't have $100,000 plus dollars but I remain hopeful and positive that something will turn up out of the blue, like a miracle... :o)
One thing we like to add to our garden is "black manure" or "black dirt" Witch is cow manure that's been sitting for about 10 years, my girlfriend's family has a farm and we just take it off there hands, lots of worms in it too, so go make friends with farmers! Another thing those barrels are good for is rain water collecting (lots of videos about them on youtube), perfect water for the plants. Awesome video, keep up the great work!
@solarcabin well that sweet life ifeelyummers was talking about includes building the beds, amending the soil, seed starting, planting, mulching, weeding, watering, I know because I do it too. All people see is the final result, and think it just fell out of the sky. I have a huge garden, and several smaller ones, I'm out all Spring doing the above, now Summer is different, after a few weeks of weeding all I have to do is harvest.

No really, there is a pole in the yard that casts a shadow for a short time in spring but not there in summer.
