I don't think some people quite understand the strong sense of identity that Texans have. We take a Texas history class before we take US History (at least when I was in school). Talk of secession isn't terribly uncommon, but it's generally not meant seriously (outside of fringe groups)... it's more an expression of the independent Texan spirit and sense of identity.

Where, precisely, in the Constitution does it say that taxes are unconstitutional? Article 1, Section 8 specifically gives the Congress the power "to lay and collect taxes". For reasons that remain opaque (big word--sorry) to constitutional scholars, the Supreme Court in the late 1800s ruled that an income taxt was unconsitutional. The 16th Amendment nullified that court ruling.
The 16th Amendment states: "The Congress shall have power to lay and collect taxes on incomes, from whatever source derived, without apportionment among the several States, and without regard to any census or enumeration"

I don't think some people quite understand the strong sense of identity that Texans have. We take a Texas history class before we take US History (at least when I was in school). Talk of secession isn't terribly uncommon, but it's generally not meant seriously (outside of fringe groups)... it's more an expression of the independent Texan spirit and sense of identity.

Anyone else notice any similarities between Governor Perry and former Governor Blagojevitch? They both seem to be weirdos with big hair, anyway.
The biggest difference is probably that Perry has the support of Chuck Norris on the secession issue (he, after all, is willing to lead the militias in the fight against the U.S.).

That's right, and they fought a war that lasted eight years, whose financial costs burdened the nation for decades, and whose loss of life (25,000 in a nation of 3 million) is the equivalent of nearly 3 million dead today. When Perry and the rest of the trash talking bigoted traitors show they are willing to pay that cost, I'll take them seriously. Where, precisely, in the Constitution does it say that taxes are unconstitutional? Article 1, Section 8 specifically gives the Congress the power "to lay and collect taxes". For reasons that remain opaque (big word--sorry) to constitutional scholars, the Supreme Court in the late 1800s ruled that an income taxt was unconsitutional. The 16th Amendment nullified that court ruling.

Second, the stock market is not a measure of economic progress or lack thereof. The market crashed in 1987 for no reason beyond investor panic.

Third, the degree to which the markets are responding rationally Obama appears to be becuase he has done too little, not too much, esp. where the banks are concerned. There remain lingering doubts about the "Obama" plan, which is really the "Bush Plan" with few changes. Most economists (and boy there's a left-wing bunch--NOT) think that Obama needs to do what FDR did under similar circumstances--take over the sick banks, get those that can survive back on their feet and let the others die.

Finally, the Great Depression ended duirng the Second World War when the Federal government intervened in the economy in unprecendented ways, spent unprecedented sums of money, and raised taxes to unprecedented levels (94% top tax rate)

and i disagree with your point on what exactly ended the Depression. the government spending then is not relevant to today, the bulk of government spending was for armament, they didnt just hand out millions or billions of dollars for nothing. huge gold inflows in the mid/late 30's was the main stimulus because it lowered real interest rates, encouraged investment spending, and purchases of durable goods. the tax rates, i cant argue with...but would YOU want to pay 80-90% tax?

I know I said that my last was, well, my last, but I actually found a FACT in this posting. You are correct that the US experienced huge gold inflows in the 1930s, but so did France. By the end of the 1930s the two nations hel nearly 2/3 of the world's gold. But the French economy did not look like the US, not even 20 years after WW2. And, for all intents and purposes, begining in 1933 US currency de facto had no relation to the price of gold. But, hey, at least you have a fact! Congrats!

You have no facts, just opinions. Money spent by the government, whether on tanks or on food stamps, is an economic stimulative. Whether or not the banks keep the money they have received is beside the point. The question is whether or not the TARP program will get the banking system back on its feets. The Obama/Bush answer is that it will. I have my doubts as does the market.
