  • I too believe that God provided this mare to save the lives of hundreds of Marines. It gives me tremendous joy to know that they took good care of her all the days of her life and honored even after she closed her eyes for the last time.

    God bless the Marines.

  • God provided Reckless to save the lives of a lot of Marines.

  • Unlike in the days of Reckless. Today, the military is NOT allowed to bring home with them any animals who have aided their efforts. Pure hogwash! Thanks you for sharing this song and video. I remember seeing Reckless at the stables on Camp Pendleton when I was in high school.

  • If you are interested in Animal War Heroes, there are some YouTube Video's about "The War Dogs of the Pacific"! Heroes are Heroes no matter the specie. I thank all of the species for their service to our country. We are so blessed.

  • I just read a Korean newspaper article yesterday on Reckless.

I was amazed at the fact this horse received a rank & awards from presidents of US & S.Korea.

The previous owner, a Korean boy, sold Reckless to Marines to buy prosthetic leg for his sister who lost her leg by a mine.

This is a great story for a movie! : )

  • The Marines have a lot of class and confidence to make this horse part of their ranks. I read that the Army won't allow soldiers in Iraq and Afghanistan to have dogs as part of their outfits. Too bad.

  • Fabulous story! Hope there will be a movie about her! And Thank You for popularizing her with this song and video - absolutely wonderful!

  • what a beutiful story:)

  • I wrote a book called "Horses and People Matching" and if I'd have known anout Reckless earlier... by gum, she'd have had a chapter all her own, now that's a match....her and her whole outfit :) what a troop together, very brave .

  • love it

  • I think I saw somewhere that she had a colt that they named Doubtless? It was so long ago that I don't remember where I saw/heard it.

Please correct me if I'm wrong. e.e this has been bugging me forever.

  • Yes, you are correct. I also think there was another one named Fearless.

  • I didn't hear of Fearless.

  • I want to read the book! Do u think one day they will make a movie about her? It would be a good one. Can u find the book at your local Books-a-million, or do u have to order it?

  • Sorry for the long time getting back on this question. I found my copy through Barnes and Noble's used and out of print section.

  • Oh, ok, thank you,

  • Err-aa what unit was she atached to

  • According to the book, she was in the 1st Marine Division, the Reckless Rifle Platoon (5th Marines).

After I had read the book, but long before I wrote the song, I ran into another folk singer from Minneapolis, (Jerry Rau) who was in the Marines in the late 50's, who actually saw her in the flesh. He said they used to have parades, on a regular basis, in her honor.

  • What an incredible story! Great video to honor her! Thanks!

  • I'd say this ought to be a movie but there was already one made in the '40s with a similar story - "Gallant Bess."

  • I just watched a televison special on her and what a horse! Glad to see they brought her home to Camp Pendelton. Such an honor for a hero of a horse.

  • I boarded my horses at Camp Pendleton Marine Base for years and they have a memorial stone built on the stables grounds honoring her. Great Video by the way, thanks for shareing it

  • That's a great story and video! Thanks for making it. She's a true hero.

  • What a great job on your song, and putting it all together to give her tribue. Talk about a "bomb-proof" horse, this girl was it!

  • The proof is in the pictures. Her life, before she came to the Marines, suggested that she was going to be something special.

  • What a nice video and a great tribute!

  • Many thanks!

  • as a marine, and lover of equines, i am glad to see this chapter of history getting some attention :)

  • I actually read the book 3.5 years ago. Beyond that, there's very little information available on her. Through my music activities, I did meet a folk artist (Jerry Rau) from MN that was in the Marines in the late 50's and actually got to see her in person.

  • Thank you for wonderfull moments !

  • Like your videos. Where did you get those stills of Reckless? I want to honor her at my blog.

  • I actually scanned those from the book that came out in 1955 by Andrew Geer. It might be tough to find a copy, but they can be found.

  • Thanks much. I'll try. I've found decent pics of Sgt York and Black Jack (riderless funeral horses). And Traveller (robert e lee's) and Commanche (custer's). But just fuzzy stuff of Reckless.

  • Yay! I love Reckless. Wheee Marines horse. :D

  • Been awhile since we had a new vid. Thanks for posting! :~)

  • yay a new onw!! and great! i love it! very nice!! :) great 5 stars!

  • Many thanks! :^)

  • Yay! =D
