Together George Harrison and Leon Russell sang it at "The Concert For Bangladesh" in 1971, the first charity concert. When Leon chimes in the audience reaction to him is chilling, our newly discovered superstar at the time. Harrison says many people have heard him but not seen him at the beginning of this song I believe, or one of the others. What a concert to have seen with Clapton, Dylan, two Beatles and the mighty Leon! Truly an American original beloved around the globe. God Bless you Leon!
@55kudu The spotlight literally could not find Leon at the concert, things were in such confusion—and that was also one super-shy, super-talented man.
@zo219 I've heard that Leon is very shy and elusive. He always seems to hanging around alot of instruments and keyboards. But hopefully his voice was loud and clear. I'm glad you went though. His health has never been great, who knows how much longer he'll be with us. All us old-timers are getting on in years. LOL Thanks for sharing your thoughts with me. I truly love Leon Russell and always have from when I was 15 in the 60s and first got turned on to him.
Claude Russell Bridges, born April 2, 1942, transcended musical styles playing with Doris Day and Frank Sinatra to Elton John and George Harrison, as well as The Byrds, The Band and The Stones! George Harrison's "Beware Of Darkness" from his epic 3-LP set, "All Things Must pass" from 1970. Leon covered it on his second "solo" album (The one next to the lava lamps) entitled "Leon Russell and The Shelter People" released in 1971. It closed the album on side two. Truly a great album... go find it!
what kind of moron would give this a thumb down? ... so cool........ love the indian thing intro... bad ass..... you got it or you dont. people............. morons
Leon was doing this number at the Tulsa Speedway -- 1972 or 73 --- and I found the meaning of life. (I've lost it a couple times since though) LOL. The orange sunshine was influential too. :)
@Bombeni I was there too. Did you buy a tambourine? Somebody made a killing on those tambourines. It was a mighty hot day that cooled down to one of the very coolest concerts of all time. Everyone who was there remembers its special-ness.
@lancethrustworthy I didn't buy one, was broke. But don't you remember, & I won't hold it against you if your memory is foggy, lol, but hardly anyone would buy them; I think they were $3, when seems cheap nowadays, but back then that was a bottle of MD2020 and a J or two. Finally the mgr or whatever said just give the stupid things away. I was sitting a few feet from one of the guys w/ the boxes and people rushed them; my ankle was twisted and swollen, but didn't hurt til the next day. :)
Was anyone at the Tulsa Speedway when all these guys went thru the crowd trying to sell tamborines w/ the Shelter emblem? No one would buy them, we were a bunch of broke hippies and whatever money we had needed to go for drugs n wine. Finally, Leon came on stage after making us wait in 100 degree temps and said give them away. I was in the wrong place at the wrong time.
I thumbs-downed in error the other night because I was laughing so hard at your comment. I do, love the lava lamps - only because of having one burning while listening to Leon as a teenager, and writing in my journal, while in-taking the fumes of the cork squares on the wall.
Its just something I do in between my early 70's acid flashbacks. Whatever you do - don't hum the opening bars of Inna Gadda De Vida and wave you hands in front of my face........
Actually, this is the Leon Russell version from his Album. There is the version from the Concert from Bangla Desh, that could be properly construed as the Leon Russell / George Harrison version. The original version is on the All Things Must Pass album by Harrison.
