@PunkRockPat The worst threat to lions aren't hunters (who pay upwards of 10,000 USD to shoot a lion); it's the impoverished local herdsmen and farmers who have taken to poisoning lions due to livestock predation.
Saving these creatures will take MONEY to pay rangers to guard them from poachers, and money to pay the locals to not set out poison. The biggest source of said money? HUNTING. Like it or not, we may have to allow a number of lions to be shot each year to save the species.
@PunkRockPat It's also reality. Either we can go with the facts and allow hunting (and ensure the survival of lions as a species, and the preservation of their habitat) OR we can do like YOU... deny practical realities, live in Captain Kangaroo Fantasy Land, and end up allowing squatters, land developers, and poachers to encroach on lion habitat (as their will be no money to protect said habitat.)
But that's OK, right? "Good intentions" mean more to people like you, than results do.
@bjggjb Hey Fuck you asshole!! "People like me??" You don't fucking know me shithead!! Mr. Fucking Lion expert. You sound like a big fucking dickhead! All I said was that it is sad that people shoot lions. Thats it!! Thats all I said. and you fuckin jump all over me like your David fucking Suzuki. Go fuck yourself and stop talking to me, You fuckin loser.
@PunkRockPat I see you're an uneducated idiot, who is PROUD of being an uneducated idiot who thinks that swearing makes him cool (or is it her? You insult like a hysterical girl.)
So I suggest you do two things.
#1. Slap your mother, for not keeping her thighs together that night 13 years ago (and conceiving your sorry ass in the process.)
#2. Go die from a Tylenol overdose (or better yet, mouthing off to the wrong person.)
@bjggjb Oh shit, it's another You tube warrior - Wow, you are so cool and scary and tough, I am very afraid. Listen fag, you and I both know I would kick your fucking ass and that you are obviously the little kid because think about it, if you really thought I was 13 or a little girl then what does that make you for picking on me for no reason in the first place??? You're just another fuckin loser kid who MAYBE just got done puberty and now thinks he owns the world.fuck u stop commenting to me.
@PunkRockPat Ooooh, you're a TOUGH GUY! And you'd kick my ass, yep. Just like every other double-digit IQed assclown I piss off, or so it seems. At this rate I've probably traded jabs with more black belts than Bruce Lee did (at least online, where badasses are a dime a dozen - right?)
@PunkRockPat One more thing. I don't know how old you are and I could care less really. But I hope you're NOT older than 13 (or 12 actually) because judging by your writing, you're a retard if you're older than that (or at least kinda immature and mentally slow.) "Just sayin", you understand...
@bjggjb Too true. The lions have to eat, and so do the herdsmen. If we have to pay the herdsmen not to kill the lions, the money has to come from somewhere.
If I had the time available, I would listen to this beautiful song by Canadian great singer Bruce Cockburn, all day long; I've loved it since I first heard it in the '70s.
@lunareclipse0629 Dude, I am always in my "Hippie Mood"! This song just makes it come out even more. I love it so much. It's just so beautiful. I want to go dance in fields and sit in trees and stare at the stars. I also want to go find the lions. Anyone know where they are?
I can't believe Neal Young was nominated for 3 grammy awards this year,, Bruce is a Canadian muscial genious! He's one reason canada is as great as it is,,,, not to mention one hell of a humanitarian!
This song is about the lions that have gone missing in Tokyo, that were nearly extinct from a rocket launcher, on the coldest night of the year, because a tree fell in the forest.
I love this song. I have a live acoustic cover version by Michael Hedges, and it has been my alarm tone for the last 3 years or so. It's an absolute pleasure to wake up to this song :)
Bruce, don't know about now but VERY religious at the time, is using a biblical reference in this song. Wondering were the Lions are? As in Early Christians standing powerless in the arena, waiting for the lions to be released. It is a political song there's no doubt about it. He used biblical symbolism in one way or another in most of his early stuff.
@BrianScottActor I don't know whether this is a political song at all, I only feel joy and ecstasy listening to it. Bruce's 2 later songs If I had a rocket launcher and They call it democracy are his more strident political staple. I agree that his early symbolism was more biblical but I think and hope that he has grown past this bronze age mythology.
I love this song, it makes me sad to watch this video as so many of these majestic creatures have been reduced to performing in circus' and have been killed for their skin. Mankind has got to be the worst species on this planet.
this is a long-time favorite of mine. bruce wrote it. And in an interview I heard, he said it had something to do with an awareness of the potential of nuclear holocaust. Funny, because it's so peaceful...but definitely about accepting death as part of life instead of always being afraid.
maybe somewhat inspired by the "lions", three humps of mountain over Vancouver, of "Lion's Gate Bridge". I think "All the Diamonds" was off the same album,
surfer390111 thankyou, ive been showing people donnies for years and no-one listens. He did a great cover and please anybody reading this listen to donnies cause it is trully magic. I want him to come to down to Australia again, I missed 'im.
@alistairproductions No, kid's weren't as ignorant or stupid then & recognized that it's pronounced KOE-bərn; not that I'd expect you to be able to pronounce that either because you probably have fetal alcohol syndrome.
Fortunately he grew up in Canada, where the pronunciation would be obvious as culturally they are not so ignorant and monolingual as we folks from the States.
I read an interview in which he said the kids called him "Cokeburn" (that's apparently close to the original Scottish pronunciation which would have a gutteral "ch" as in "loch".
I saw Bruce on a Canadian talk show. He said when he wrote this song he had recently became a Christian. Hence like the romans feeding the christians to the lions.
how did any of you guys first discover this great song? I only heard it because its on the soundtrack of the film HOOT. I squinted at the end credits and saw that it was by Bruce Cockburn, then I looked it up on good old Youtube, yay!
I saw Bruce on the street a few weeks ago in my hometown of Kingston , Ontario. Drives a big blue eco friendly van. I was too scared to approach him , lol. What a great Canadian talent. We are lucky to have you Bruce.
I'm 45 and had never heard this song until today when a local station played it. Awesome song, can't get enough of it. I need to get out more. Thanks :)
...only cuz hes Canadian. If he were an American and got the air time he deserved, he would have had #i hits- at least a few. If I had a rocket launcher for sure...music today blows! lol Older music is timeless!
Older Canadian greats are timeless, like lightfoot, the guess who, Cockburn, and the Band. We presently have write offs in Canadian music...with exceptions to hip-hop artist Shad.
There are lots of people with their minds on eternity...they're called "suicide bombers." Not everyone is as actualized as Bruce. Eternity can be dangerous in the wrong hands!
Just to loop your feedback skynet556, I was merely reflecting on the lyrical content not postulating on quasi-idolatry or opining on the particularity of the so-called "war on terror" or other ideologies promoted by fearmongers... and just so we are clear on this, since I myself do not know the artist personally, I'm not in a position to remark on the level of actualization he has reached. Perhaps you are better acquainted.
SuddenSparkles,I think that anyone who can weave such a nuanced and compelling allegory must be fairly actualized. If anything, the omnipresent "war on terror" and proliferation of fear mongering makes this song more relevant than ever. Nevertheless, any ideology can be dangerous in the wrong hands. I'm ex-military and I've seen it. I appreciate the elegant response, though :)
wow! I just read that, and I have to say thats a really good comment. I never thought about it that way, I guess I take 'social actualization' for granted, being in such a lucky part of the world (Canada) Thanks for freshening up my perspective!
The "lions" refer to the chinese and Russians back in the day...he dreamt of a nuclear war and the chinese/russians were lions roaming the streets...when he woke up obviously there was no war, so he was "wondering where the lions are". LOL, as they say, you can look it up. Brilliant lyricist,
Are you serious? Knowing that kind of ruins the whole song for me. Now I'll be thinking of communism every time I hear this song. I hate that. How do you know this?

...only cuz hes Canadian.

If only we all had our minds on eternity... what a wonderful world this would be.

I never thought about it that way, I guess I take 'social actualization' for granted, being in such a lucky part of the world (Canada) Thanks for freshening up my perspective!

...so true! Why cant we all just get along?...listen to working class hero by John Lennon, I think youd really like it...its such a powerful song!

This was the song that opened up the door for me to Bruce Cockburn. It was new and the local am station played it.

Just sent the vid to my grown kids. Hippie families went to the concerts. His aura glowed huge and white.
