I wish he had told them if you want a slim tenor find someone else.Too hell with your diets! Maybe he would have made less money but he could have done lots of concert work and also opera but then we would not have heard him and gotten into opera like I did!
50 years ago I learned my love of good music listening to Mario Lanza. A few have come near to replacing him in my music collection but none have quite made it for the feeling he always managed to bring to anything that he sung . It is a pity that he had to die so young.
For many years a long time ago this was a wedding song. Nearly every bride wanted it sung atheir wedding. Beautiful! Mario Lanza was the best and he died too young. Thank you for posting. ~OneKewpie~
Lanza could sing any song opera and popular...the three tenors tried it and they couldn't sing the popular songs! Bravo Mario! You're the best! and thank you for posting.
this recording was my introduction to lanza. i was 10 and had begun to demonstrate some musical talent. i was overcome by this recording. the sheer beauty of lanza's voice, coupled with his interpretation and interaction with the orchestra, as well as the inspired orchestration made an indellible mark on me.
Mario had the most beautiful voice but passed away far too young. In April 1959, Lanza suffered a minor heart attack, followed by double pneumonia in August. He died in Rome in October of that year at the age of 38 from a pulmonary embolism after undergoing a controversial weight loss program colloquially known as "the twilight sleep treatment," which required its patients to be kept immobile and sedated for prolonged periods

Lanza will always be in my mind one of the greatest tenor voices. Such vocal richness and warmth. You can only measure such a voice by how much it speaks to your heart. It is not produced at an Opera School or taught by a vocal coach it is God given and comes from the very centre and core of the human soul.Maestro Lanza bravo!!
When he died, it was said his wife locked herself in a room for days & just listened to his songs. I came from Philadelphia. Mario lived in the south Philly section of the city, that section being mostly Italian & a mafia meca. It really WAS said the mafia DID kill him. Unfortunate but it was widely heard & suspected. He was young & gone far too soon.
I can never make it through this song without tears. This was one of my parents songs. They felt just this way about each other too. My mother left this to join my father in May of 2004. They left behind a legacy of a house FILLED with song and dance. Now at the ripe old age of 54, I so appreciate that gift. My sister and I know literally thousands of songs and lyrics stretching over more than four decades. What better gift to leave your family.
Your home was like my like my home from years ago.
We buried my mother this last Tuesday. She was 99. This was her brother's song. His voice was just like this. Her voice was gorgeous too. I am making a recording of thier favourites. Her song was "Torna a Surriento". It was played as her dear body left the church.God bless you.

one only needs to compare this rendition with that of any other "great" tenors, caruso, gigli, wunderlich, corelli, anyone. there is no comparison.

He had one of the most amazing voices. It's such a tragedy that his life ended at the age of 38. His wife passed away five months later. She was 37.
