I can't understand a single word she is singing. Saw her as Turadnot at Covent Garden several years ago. Yes, a huge voice, but no subtlety or flexibiluty at all. One of the greates? Get serious.
Alessandra Marc has one of the most beautiful voices in the world. If you never heard her live in an opera house, you have no idea what power, beauty and effect this voice had. Hearing her here is like looking at a photo of Niagra Falls. You have to be there...next to it...and then you get it. Brava, diva. And here...with the fabulous Giuseppe Giacomini...the two of them together...an experience that I only wish I had been at to hear...Magnificent!
In some ways... Vinay is a true Baryton singing tenor... Giacomini is a true tenor, with a dark timbre... ;-)
But, compare Giacomini to Vickers 1958 in London... Both have a dark timbre with a ringing easy top range... In all cases, my two prefered Don Carlos...
Giacomini sang at the Met from the mid 70s to the late 80s. It should have been longer. Giac had a lot going against him I think. For one, I would guess that the "3 tenors" had a lot of influence in keeping other potential stars down. maybe i'm being a little conspiracy theory here, but i've heard this from ppl in the biz. Also, Giac was not so handsome or good on stage. I've also heard he was unreliable/inconsistent vocally. What a voice though!
Alessandra Marc has one of the greatest voices of all time; she is a standout with her uniquely personal and moving voice of unearthly beauty. Have you sampled her two arias from this performance? Unbelievably great singing! We don't hear enough of her. How fortunate we are to have these performances posted! Giacomini is another undeservedly neglected singer, surely the last great tenor to sing this role.
Marc has always had a real Rolls Royce of a voice. The problem is that she was very difficult to cast because of her size. From what I understand, she's slimmed down a great deal in the past few years, but it's hard to undo damage like that; it's really sad that in an era with a dearth of truly great voices someone like her could be so overlooked.

Don Carlo is a young man, Giaco's voice is too old to be him...

Alessandra Marc sings so beautifully. This is a fantastic performance.
PS - Those of you with negative things to say about this performance can take your dirty comments and shove them where the sun don't shine.

I think that giacomini's voice is reminiscent of Ramon Vinay, the great chilean tenor/baritone. Anyone else think so?

They sound very good together. Why isn't Giocomini at the Met? Listen to Elisabeth Rethberg to hear a brilliant voice

Oh well, Giacomini, Martinucci and Bonisolli wouldn't sure had deserved less than the "official" three tenors.
And I could add others, from Luchetti on...
