WTF are you playing at Ed? Why aren't you telling the people to REFUSE TO FILL IN THE CENSUS FORM?
I thought you was a decent bloke after watching your stand up routines. Now i can see your just a puppet that can't think for yourself.
Good job we Lawful Rebellions aren't violent or it'd be 'Your going home in a f'cking ambulance'. Or at least to hospital, and then maybe your dad'll come and collect you.
@thirteenfingers errr... The point is of course that they want money to go to efforts that matter, therefore, knowing that some people tick religious when they are not, or that many people are assumed religious when they do not answer, the answering thereof would prevent the bad things, which he listed, not to be funded by the state.
Therefore you answer the optional question to keep the democracy a functioning democracy.
YOU CAN STILL BELIEVE IN AN AMAZING CONCIECNESS THAT CREATED LIFE HERE AND IN THE UNIVERSE A SPIRITUAL BEING, SO ISNT THAT YOUR GOD, WHATS A MAN MAN MADE SET OF RULES AND CLOTHING AND RITUALS IE.(RELIGION) GOT TO DO WITH IT.
IF YOU BELIVE IN AN ALMIGHY GOD BUT DONT HAVE A RELIGION, PUT NO RELIGION , now im confused
The (ONS) website points out that the UK is "an active participant" in an EU Census Legislation Task Force. In 2008 the European Parliament approved a Council Census Regulation - the information gathered in the 2011 census will be shared across all 27 Member States of the EU.
bollox to the petty minor issue of what religion you belong to......all that needs to be done is to write no contract return to sender on the envelope.....simples......by consenting and filling out the form you are automatically becoming associated with a terrorist organisation (lockheed martin) who supply arms to dictators and KNOWINGLY flout the geneva convention by playing a part in the deaths of UNARMED CIVILLIANS.....do your research,.
As well as "if you don't believe in God, tick 'no religion'", you should not probably not just put "Christian" if you don't go to church, don't think Jesus was God incarnate and died for your sins etc. Just thinking there might be some higher power and celebrating Christmas etc doesn't really make you "Christian".
Just ignore the whole census. We live in a FREE country. You are FREE to not fill it in. If we are FORCED to fill it out under threat of fines, are we truly free?
i disagree. fudamentally a census is important for effectively organizing a society. Tobesure, there is potential for abuse: political spin, inappropiate use of the infomation gathered, etc. However, a regular census is so important to the smooth functioning of a society, as well as very benificial to future sciences, that it is worth a great deal of effort to conduct a cesus free from shenannigans. Participate, and be honest! And, if you are worried, keep watch on the process.
@dfarmer1584 You might be surprised how deeply I am watching the process.. which I why I'm not personally participating. If you want to, that's fine. Just don't try and insist that I do. I am free to chose not to and will fight for that freedom. You might also want to look back through history to see how Census data has been routinely abused. Have a nice day.
@revelwoodie And, we don't need Ed's help on the religion question on the census since the US hasn't had one since the 1950s! Anyhow, in the UK people are more likely than here to list themselves as, say, Church of England since that's how they grew up. So different culturally. Religious teachings come up in UK state schools that would be lawsuit material in the US. BTW - I highly recommend Pew Forums for excellent data on religion in the US (and a lot of other things). Great organization.
Er. He's Irish but he lives in the UK. So he has to fill in the census. And he has an obvious interest in the politics of the country he lives and works in and, if he has children for example, an interest in the schools in the country.
Lets sort out the blasphemy law (ireland) and the census and any other religious dogma that is forced upon us by these fairytale people. Freethinkers Unite!
Come to America before our next census and help us out on this score. PLEASE. Americans are not really very religious, but always say they are when asked because it's the socially appropriate answer. If there were 5 times the churches there currently are in America, there still wouldn't be room for even half the people who claim to go to church. Americans are not as religious as they tell people they are.
@revelwoodie Actually, Americans attend churches (and other houses of worship) in very high numbers. Mountains of research backs that up. Our problem is the lack of acceptance of people who aren't believers, always apparent during presidential and many congressional election campaigns. Not only are candidates supposed to be religious, they're supposed to be Christian. We do have much stronger separation of church & state compared to the UK though. Bishops in the House of Lords? Had no idea.
From the BHA: We understand that many people wrote in ‘Jedi’ as a form of protest at being asked about their beliefs. We are encouraging people to tick the ‘No Religion’ box instead for 2 reason: 1) In the top line analysis, a ‘Jedi’ would be counted as ‘No Religion’ anyway, 2) the more people who explicitly identify as non-religious, the better change we have of ensuring secular services and policy.
@FLUSEM666 I've done that in the past, for the same reason. But I think we must move beyond the idea of a joke. Religious people have no sense of humour when it comes to religion. They would prefer you to believe in The Force than believe in nothing. They can then happily rationalise that you actually believe in God, you just don't understand it yet. The No Religion option is another kettle of fish altogether.
