In defense of Golden, there is a LOT to do if you like the outdoors. Clubs and bars, not so much. But kayaking, hiking, mountain biking, rock climbing -- tons. There's skiing not too far away, too. But, yes, the workload is heavy and the students are serious. If partying is your main goal, try CU up the road. (Full disclosure: I teach at Mines on occasion.)

Oh and that part about there being lots to do in Golden, there are 3 bars, and anything good in Denver is like 30 minutes away. Plus, you'll likely never leave your room after freshman year.
