Don't know much about boats but these are sure tough vessels to sail around the world. Must be one helluva adventure. Hats off to all who attempt this.
That's awesome, i have read alot of old Naval stories about how dangerous it is to sail around Cape Horn. Question for you sailors our there. Is a Catilina style sail boat the best for a solo sailor? i want to live on the boat and eventually sail around the world with it.
@stonewall97 Yours is a sloop rig and its just fine for solo. Focus more on your skills and wisdom of the ocean for now then upon your boat. I'm sure many Catilinas are out there now sailing around the world. You know its better to be a good sailor on a bad boat then a bad sailor on a good boad. My girlfrind and I are getting ready to sail our 40ft cutter on a 5 year round the world voyage. I hope to see you in some port someday. S/V Siberian Sea
akseakayaker: I agree, it will probably take me 1 year of training and experience before i go sail off on my own... i will hire an experienced captain to sail my boat and train me while at sea.. i hope i can hire someone who acts like Captain Ron. LOL Captain Ron is a funny movie, i will watch it tonight.
Yaya, the landchampion talking. The reef is for both less swinging and more wind in the genua for speed.
The sweet water professor gre44444 will have to start some days coast sailing as a start, I estimate. Wait to you wish for some comfort when living on a ship in stead of mere sailing it. I respect every second on the video.
Nice! My friend has a Westsail (32'? i think). He just headed out to Port Townsend, WA in the Puget Sound. There is a Westsail boat rally taking place there this weekend.
Long keel right? Just looking at the way she boogies from side-to-side downwind.. My folkboat does the same when she can't go any faster (don't think I'll be taking her round cape horn anytime soon though ,-)
Nice boat, nice video, must have been a great experience. I'm jealous.
Lol didnt you know youtube is full of professional boat captains that have sailed bigger boats in rougher seas than the video they happen to be watching when they comment?
^^ LOL great comment, and so true. I've been checking out these sort of vids, and in each and everyone of them, some dipstick feels the urge to say how "that's nothing", "these are baby waves", "you call that a storm?" and how he's "been through much worse".
This video was made about 4 hours after we passed Cape Horn, so we were probably 30-40 miles away, on our way towards Falkland Islands. It was a pretty good day, weatherwise. Another boat came through a couple days earlier and got knocked down. We were very lucky.
Great video. Thanks for uploading it for us to see. Much appreciated. How about making a movie of your trip and uploading to google video. That would be awesome.
Great video! I've sailed around the Horn and those waters are all that legend says they are! Great video. Currently sail the Great Lakes but will get back to bluwater cruising in the next couple years. Superb video
We watched that video during the trip, that was an impressive tale. We had it pretty easy compared to that. In this clip the wind is probably blowing 40-50, but it's from behind.
Looks like some Rough Stuff! Great Video. I learned how to sail on a Sailfish Boat designed by Alcort. My Dad and I put it all together and I learned the hard way how to sail. But this boat in the vid is a much bigger boat.
is it on auto pilot if so that is nise wow

yeh i went round back in'92. pretty balmy. just a 30 foot swell with the occasional 60 foot one that stacked up and only 60-gusting to 80 knots.

Your mic makes it sound windy but it doesn't look too bad, just a large swell.
