@nathanel18 The music was playbacked. But it doesn't change the fact, that it is their best tv special ever. In those times there was not such thing as 'live recorded' in tv specials(or very few)
What a perfect song and perfect performance. Beautiful, melancholy song. Like most ABBA songs, killer hooks, lyrics, and the voices are perfect.
Both girls are breathtakingly beautiful here. I'll always favor the beautiful Agnetha, but Frida looks stunning here, too, and I love the end where she shows off her playful personality.
there are so many lip synched vids of these girls singing, it a drag, still the song rocks from the studio but acual live singing of this song is really great. too bad bands like these dont fit the mainstream anymore, too much dance crap. there would have to be a big change in the music industry, to have music like this played on radio. its sad really, at the time this song came out i was around 9 and loved this record, even though i was hearing Genesis and Yes cranking out of my brothers room
I can remember in the late 70s that there were a good deal that thought there was something very strange if you listened to both Abba and Sex Pistols. I still do today and I am still convinced both delivered original and exciting music! The poor young of today getting fed recycled shit!

To me they're at the top of their carrer : everyone is great and so cute, as well the songs. THis one is my fav! so moving and the melody is just master piece
I guess you were expecting Stalin to come from behind the curtains and slaughter them all with hammer and sickle, weren't you? Nah, just kidding. It was 1975, I believe. And yeah, it must've been a big event back then.
@fortinero45 My friend I believe we have a lot in common. Thanks a lot for that comment. I do agree with you, Agnetha has been always the lead singer in Abba, she is the center, the soul and the main atraction of the group. Some people are jus blind (ciegos ). Thanks my friend.
I love this group more than I can express. ABBA is to groups as Bob Marley is to reggae, Michael Jackson is to pop and Jimmy Hendricks is to guitar. Long live ABBA!!!!!!
I totally concur with your statement. There will probably not be another group with their magnifence in sound and recording and their worldwide appeal in our lifetime. I like your taste in music!!!

They were afraid of going to the United States -- the home of rock 'n roll -- because they were considered a bad joke there -- so they went to little backwashes like Poland, Sweden, Czechoslovakia, Germany, England and Austalia. Americans still think they are a silly joke of a group, but the Swedish babes have nice asses -- but that's all.
Jerry Greenburg, President of their American label, summed it up nicely: They didn't come to America because they didn't need to. Everything else they were doing around the world worked. Americans lapped up Mamma Mia! the musical and have bought six million copies of ABBA Gold. They must like purchasing groups that are a silly joke.
No they were afraid of American audiences. Agnetha freaked out during a trip to a Washington, D.C. concert and they had to cancel. The old American senior citizens are finding the music very restful -- but it is not rock.
Benny recently said, in reaction to being inducted into the Hall of Fame this year, that it was surprising because they were not a rock band, but a pop band. Agnetha hated flying, and they had a rough flight to D.C. and yes she was unable to perform. ABBA achieved their success differently than most bands did, and that just irks the hell out of some Americans and thus they were a "joke". "Rock" nor "Pop" music was not born in America, by the way.
ABBA in Warsaw was more important event than the first man on the moon. At least for all young people in Poland, I think. (Those were my student' years.)
What appears to be lipsynching is actually a combination of the best of both worlds. The learned how to get the accapella sound with the piano and guitar down to a science, where it created something of a unique quality, that was a little of both. They knew their audience knew they weren't actually "Live" so they did a compromise. It was about marketing their brand, and many didn't get that, then or now.
You're right. What is more, they are not even using microphones, they did not try to fool the audience. And when they really did it live, they were just perfect. You can't compare Divine ABBA to bloody Britney Spears...
The genius of Frida's vocal here lies in that she's singing only three notes in the verse, arranged in his own genius fashion by Benny, but you would never guess that since she imbues each note with such raw passion.
the 'sawtooth' harmony Frida and Agnetha invented, that is the core of the famous '3rd voice'. Frida's lower
'feathery' tone combined with Agnetha's clear high tone on each note creates super-rich notes of great depth. Another fine example of the '3rd voice' is
'I Am The City', but the greatest of all is the chorus on 'Just Like That'; a molten river of sugar I want to be the last sound I hear on earth...
I'm obsessed after your explanation. Btw, I heard Cass Elliot from mama's and papa's to talk about that concept inside the Michelle and Cass voice textures mix, 10 years before. Very interesting! Thanks you very much.
@hermitcrabbot "Sawtooth" refers to the waveform? What do you mean? There's an interview with Michael Tretow where he talks about adding a thinned out, flanged track to create that shimmer but it sounds like you're talking about something else. The remarkable thing to me about their voices is that I can never tell when they're singing in harmony or just doubling -- they mesh perfectly.

Thank you for sharing the heartache you must to feel. This song has such a transcedental theme and music. Benny, Sig and Bjorn wrote a timeless materpiece. It should be put in a capsule to be opened after 100 years, with the equiptment to play it of course. Just perfect. Thank you for posting this particular video. Bless you<
I think Agnetha is not very pleased with Frida for flirting with her hubby. But imagine them being together every second of the way...Confrontations are bound to happen. It's natural, friends do get mad at each other.
Is no-one listening to the lyrics. This is one of the most painful, powerful love songs ever. I'm going through this exactly at the moment and it's a dark place. You love someone so much you'd take a bullet for them but you cant seem to love them enough to make it work.
i totally agree with you. i also think the fact that she was beginning not to like crowds scared her a bit while performing this. but hey, who knows what she was exactly thinking...
Hello!! They could absolutely sing live, check the other video clips. Dum dum diddle for instance. Frida you are a hot mamma!!! Agnetha you look like an angel.
Every was dubbing during the 70's and 80's.
Thank you for posting all these Abba video's. Nice to know there are still so many fans.
OMG OMG... Frida at the .20-.29 second mars.... HEAVENLY. Even though the tune is about breaking up, she looked ohh so sultry and beautiful, as she always does.
ABBA are amazing. Not just Frida with the deep sultry voice, Not just Agnatha with her upbeat high soaring voice and flowing locks of hair, but even Benny & Bjorn with their perfect harmony... well, how much can one say about a a great band???
i understand how everyone is saying that it was painful for them to sing this because of the divorces, and im sure it was, AFTER the divorces. but im pretty sure its impossible this song was WRITTEN about the divorces, because this song came out in 1976 on the album Arrival, and werent both couples together at that point ? So how could this song be about their divorces ? just wondering...
a stunning video of my favorite abba song. they both look beautiful here.and btw, they are very talented. i cannot think of any other female duo that comes close to their vocal perfection. stevie & christy, nope. the wilson sisters, nope.their are none.
7ABBA7, Thank you for posting this special video, I like this song since my childhood, I did like forever learn to play this guitar (for the notes), but, I did cannot, but only want to go to listen this song, always.
Jeannie, you are so spot on. They,(both couples)had such a painfull existance after their breakups. Bjorn even asked Frida if she could do this song knowing it was about Benny and her divorse. I know personally the pain of this song and it is very dear to me.
The only thing that bothers me about ABBA is that a lot of their "live" performances they simply lip syncing to the recording like in this video. They wrote excellent pop songs but I can understand the criticisms of their live shows because of this. By the way, I always thought Frida is really hot:)In the rare times she's made up like her blonde partner she is very good looking. Most of the time they made her look too plane jane.
These types of tv appearances were for promotional purposes. It takes a lot of time, effort, and money to travel around the world with a full band and all the equipment. For actual live stuff on tv, they did Dick Cavett, a special with Olivia, and one on Japanese tv with an orchestra - which are on YouTube. A few appearances they sing live to a backing track. But there are excellent live show clips here from Wembley arena and also from ABBA the movie in Australia - really good stuff.
this video is strange. frida and agnetha look ravishing and display a great range of emotions. high quality, dramatic pop which even pete townsend loves. high quality sound and image too. thanx, 7ABBA7

This comment has received too many negative votes show
It's over dubbed because they could not achieve the ABBA studio wall of sound live with out ten musicians-yall!(o:

So how could this song be about their divorces ? just wondering...
hailey9812 3 years ago 8
Knowing Me Knowing You was not about Benny and Fridas divorce so you are right. :)

Did anyone catch "The Look" from Agnetha after Frida's air guitar number? Hmmm...
frapistat 3 years ago 3
Yep, love that look on her face hahaha
FiddleRouge 3 years ago 2
She looks very sad.
As the song says, "Breaking up is never easy". I'm sure this song was tough to sing over and over considering the meaning behind it.

Jeannie, you are so spot on. They,(both couples)had such a painfull existance after their breakups. Bjorn even asked Frida if she could do this song knowing it was about Benny and her divorse. I know personally the pain of this song and it is very dear to me.

Too bad the camera pans away just as Frida is doing her air guitar. She looks so at ease, natural and beautiful. One of my favorite ABBA moments.

Aww, Frida tilts her head so sadly at 3:32. :(
Then breaks out the fun with the air guitar at the end! :D

Thanks for this video. It seems to be hard to find any ABBA videos which aren't lip-synced (This one is).

Check out my Wembley Arena concert for a full Live concert with NO lipsyncing at all. ABBA Rocks!

Thank you! I just finished watching it; it's great!
