That these guys are not household names just has to be one biggest injustices in meaningful intelligent contemporary music their debut from 1972 from which this track comes from is a tour de force and up their with HARVEST , SWEET BABY JAMES TAPESTRY ,yes , its that good !
Used to play their albums (yes, vinyl) back in the mid-70's at college radio station WAIC. Maybe someone knows the song that is "Well, i guess you're just not listening, KLOA is on the radio"..... stuck in my head.
wow, still sound as good as ever and why they were never a great? Guess kinda like the other greats of that time such as Poco,Pure Prarie Leauge. Wasnt country, wasnt rock so ... They all deserve credit for making MY life bearable. LOL
Had this taped on a cassette after Steely Dan's Countdown to Ecstasy album. Listened to it parked off a dirt road in the woods with my first love. Haven't seen her in more than 30 years. I broke her heart and then she broke mine. Still think of her from time to time. Life takes many paths. Wish we could go back and explore them all.
I loved these guys from teh beginning... my older sister saw them and bought the album when she was in college and played it for me..
Then Rex hugged me when I saw them at Piece Of Cake after I graduated from college and was languishing at my parent's house in 1982 or so.. That night my eye was one guy besides one of my favorte bands ever - from UMF and we have now live together over 21 years.
Be careful, or they'll steal your heart. I sit and watch these videos, and reminisce about all the crazy time we had with rex and Neal. Your house, or your house?
how old am I now? I watched these "kids" at the DownHome in Johnson City, Tn back in the 70's. Always a treat. How in the hell did they end up in JC? I don't know but I've always been grateful. Hey guys, remember the night I danced on the tables with the Munchkin after some authenic East Tn. Moonshine???? Prob'ly not, but I do. Thanks!!!
meet them in Oswego and Syracuse NY and they were cool as fuck. the oswego show was my first time seeing them. before that Highway Song was the only song I really knew. They blew my mind away. GREAT shit, thank god they still preforming.
To steal the words given to Leonard Cohen. I'm glad to be a live during the time of Rex and Neal.....Years of seeing them. Never old, always another roadway for my mind
I got their songbook from their website a while back-Rex even signed it. Learned "Dean Moriarty, and next up, will be "Highway Song". These guys are class.
tradfan: "Prisoner" is one of my favorites, though that whole album is such a classic. Thanks to Folkhero01 for this posting. It amazes me what one can find on You Tube, though sometimes it just appears. Don't know whether you saw this, but I found a RECENT slightly different rendition of "The Persecution and Restoration of Dean Moriarty." If you've seen already, cool, but if not, hope you enjoy! Had never seen posted til now. PEACE
Have always felt their first album was one of the very, very rare "perfect" albums (i.e., every song is great, no filler, no crap). I've collected music since 1964 and only a handful of albums meet that criteria (Who's Next, Dsrk Side of the Moon to name a few from that very select group)
Damn... the concept of a "perfect album" is an old.. and rare one. And this was one for sure. Thousands of vinyl, and almost as many CDs.... this stands out.
Just saw the guys do a Simon & Garfunkel "songbook" Friday at Outpost in the 'Burbs, Montclair, NJ. It was pretty good but I prefer their own work. Rex and Neil are really nice guys and very talented. If you get a chance to see them - do it.
Have been a fan of A2S since 1972. Their concerts are awesome, great harmonies and guitar playing. Plus, you can talk with them before and after the show.
Was first turned on the Neil and Rex in 1974. Wore out their first album. Lucky enough to see them in Champaign, IL in 1975. Rediscovered that first album on CD a few years ago. Ahhh, the memories.
Amazing!!! This band has been one of my favorites since I discovered their first LP in 1971! I thought I would never saw them live. Thanks for posting this on YouTube. Really great
If you every caught Two Step on a New England college tour as I did, at the University of Rhode Island, you fell in love with these guys and their wonderful music. I live in Pacifica, Calif. their music takes me home to '76 - '76 along the Narragansett, R.I shoreline.
I always think of new england when ever i hear any aztec two step. For me they remind me of the beaches of cape cod. Thats when i first heard them. I also saw them several times including once at the main point in bryn mawr pa.....great songs....great music.....great memories
I've been a fan of Aztec Two Step since I first heard them perform at Colgate University in the fall of 1977. I've attended their concerts whenever possible in the ensuing 30 years. To me, their music is timeless. Listening to this song...seeing them 30 years older...connects a lot of things....

I'm surprised they're not mega-stars. Just wonderful, wonderful musicianship. Great voices.
