  • man i miss him calling the races!!

  • nice margin of victory . RIP , Barbaro .

  • No question in my mind that had thing's not gone so tragically wrong for Barbaro in the Preakness, we would've, as racing fan's, gotten to see the best head to head rivalry in the form of Barbaro vs. Bernardini since the Sunday Silence vs. Easy Goer rivalry of 1989. Barbaro and Bernardini are 2 of the best American conventional dirt colt's to come down the pike in ages. It just so happened that the two were 3yr.old's at the same time. I always look back and wonder, "WHAT IF"??

  • @GBeret83 Well said; I agree completely. I rued the day Barbaro got hurt; I hated seeing him suffer and go through his ordeal for all those months, and the fact that racing was robbed of a great rivalry with Bernardini. I loved both colts, so I don't think I could root against either of them.

Probably one my biggest letdowns in racing right up there with Secretariat's early retirement.

    What if, indeed.

  • Dave Johnson is the best!!!

  • RIP Barbaro.....ill have an apple from my orchard just for you when its my turn to go..hnot enough i admit but thanks mnonetheless

  • Barbaro displayed not only Great Personality, and Heart, He truely was The next Great American Champion. A certain Triple Crown Threat, and The style in which he imposed on this helpless field who could only watch Barbaro Stride Clear with a 1/16 to go :))))) He was truely Robbed of Greatness by illness. I hope Uncle Mo , and Frankel are the two next Global Stars. They will remain dominant but only if healthy, and happy. Cheers Barbaro.....Best Derby since 1973.

  • This video always gives me chill, Barbaro drawing off using natural cruising speed, and the others staggering home after him. Dave Johnson called a great race.

"And DOWN THE STRETCH THEY COME in the Kentucky Derby! And BARBARO is RUNNING AWAY!!"

  • Barbaro truly was something special:) RIP god bless him

  • I just read Barbaro's story... and as an animal lover who admires the spirit in all living beings I am very full of tears right now... sounds to me like Barbaro was an heroic animal... !

    God rest his soul.

  • R.I.P wonder-horse:(

  • I wonder the same thing, out of the other horses it had to be Barbaro. But from the bad that happened good came with it. Even though it may not seem like it.

  • I miss barbaro. he was such a good horse... :_(

  • Why oh why did it have to happen.... this time I just started sobbing.... God bless him....

  • I ask myself that very same question, a lot. Barbaro was something very special.

God bless YOU for your sentiments.

  • I watch this race from time to time. Barbaro, we still love you and miss you. Perhaps, one of the best derby runs ever.

  • One of the most graceful and beautiful horse ever.Rip Barbaro.

  • That's really cool! (^_^)

  • this guy's call is tremendous. i shed some tears when watching this. thanks for the video.

  • and down the stretch they come! got to love it.

  • thanks cf1970. Nice job. I love Barbaro. Dave Johnson sounds wonderful. Now I gotta hear Luke's version.

  • Thanks for the comments. I'd never heard Dave's call before, so I figured others would like to hear his take on it as well.

Luke's call is very good, may he rest in peace.

  • awesome performance!

  • O..M..G! What an extraordinary performance! It looked to me that he was hand-ridden all the way through, no whip? Ahhh...gotta make this my finale for the night. Absolutely thrilling. :)

  • Dave Johnson? I thought it was Tom Durkin that did this race?

  • Tom did indeed have the race call for NBC. I simply edited Dave Johnson's 2006 Derby call he made with Westwood One radio into the mix of video footage I had; I thought some would enjoy hearing his take on Barbaro's most defining moment.

    Take care.

  • It's always great to hear different calls on the same race... thanks!

  • You're very welcome, Travis. I wish you well with your announcing career.

    Thank you for the comments.

  • I have the utmost respect for Barbaro .He showed

such courage and determination on and off the track as well . An incredible champion who will always hold a very special place in our hearts .

Rest in peace beautiful boy .

  • R.I.P. Barbaro!!!!!!!!! exellent horse

  • When did Dave Johnson do this!?

  • ESPN Radio, I guess. Thanks for posting this - always nice to hear from old Dave!

  • Glad you enjoyed this. I simply inserted Dave Johnson's 2006 Derby call he made with Westwood One radio into the video footage I had. Dave was one of my favorites over the years, so I thought some would enjoy hearing his take on Barbaro's most defining moment.

Take care, and thanks for stopping by.

  • Sorry, I meant where not when.

    Thanks!

  • gave me chills

  • Great horse, wish I'D bet him.
