for those of you saying this is a bad interpretation of this piece, you obviously haven't attempted bill evans's style. it's impossible to replicate. the best we can do is try our best to recreate the harmonic structure, and the general emotion of the piece. Bill's rhythm, his right hand legato whilst simultaneously maintaining left hand stacatto, that's something only a heroin-addict GENIUS can accomplish.. while high on heroin.
you shouldnt be playing piano at all. and you are a mentor? what a shame if you teach how you play. you should be friends with kenny g or richard clayderman....not in a jazz world. please quit the piano
semana - It's the ol' herd (as in "cows") instinct. Someone makes a snarky comment, and others see the green light to pile on.
TC played the piece flawlessly--a lot better than some others I've heard here on YouTube! And his piano was in tune!
And, since when is a musician's hair part of the discussion? Brubeck's could be pretty wild! Evans must've used a pound of Brylcream every time he came on stage.
Thanks TC for posting this video. I enjoyed it, and I know others did as well.
Not even close... he's good as a sight reader, and a good pianist, but not a jazz musician, and doesn't not just even strike the same awe as the other video. With the original, you can't but help feel the beauty and unbridled joy when he breaks out in "swing". With this, you're waiting to hear him break out - doesn't happen. Don't compete with composer, you'll fall flat every time.
@mrfrozone5 chopin admired certain others' for their ability to outperform him on his own nocturnes... a better line would have been "don't compete with evans"
Such an interesting focus. (bty, I notice there is no reference to who the 24 y.o. luthier really is. In my book, that makes you cowardly. Prove me wrong and let us see who you really are.)
I am in no way a coward, just a fan of the grateful dead, and I think it is a shame that someone with such talent couldn't fit in. I am anthony l. (I dont wish to disclose my full name)and I am open to any critisism, but not from someone who will follow TC like a blind sheep, besides, jazz shouldn't be played just from a sheet
Thanks Anthony. I appreciate your response. Pls notice I refrained from calling you a coward. I simply stated one who would make a judgement who is not willing to show his face would be. Your response makes you not. (p.s.-The sheet notes are the basic piece. Tom's version here is much more than what's on the sheet.)
Bill Evans waltz played as if it were from STRAUSS - tra, la, la, la , 1, 2, 3... 1, 2, 3... and the final is too Rachmaninov, dramatic! study jazz, learn what it means!
T did not upload, nor did he even make this video; I did. (I, for one, am glad he took time during a break to play such a rewarding piece.) I guess, if you feel slighted, you can get your money back.
lol, i hope the guy aint readin off a sheet..whats so inspiring about that? this is jazz.if you hear bill play it , he swings and improvs half way through.theguy on this video aint nothin but a richard claydermen on jazz!!lol
Great Job TC!

This goes to show that a great composition will sound good even if played by a crappy musician.

ugh.
same beat? throughout?
this man is embarrassing.
he has no soul like bill evans did.
Evans put so much thought and power into each note.
this man has NONE
