Advanced mediums, not to be confused with experienced which John is, are capable of identifying who in the audience the connection is with. If John slowed down and concentrated he could probably get it with time. Once connected the quality is obviously there with John because the continuous confirmations from the receiver validate the message is for/with them. Look past the initial connection.
