  • How neccessary is the soundhole? I think it'd be cool to make a slightly bigger one, maybe 2 or 3 octaves, tuned to an akebono or pentatonic scale.

  • OMG, giving that you made it yourself, it has AMAZING sound!

  • That is nice work and anyone who said different just wishes they were as cool as you. Keep up imagination : )

  • that is sweetly done

  • Sounds great! Do you have instructions for how to make this? I need to make something similar in my physics class. :)

  • this is epic

  • are that hairpins?!?!?!? o.O

  • That is really cool that you made it, if you are really into the kalimba (or mbira) i'm not completely sure what the difference is. I'd go buy one though so you could get really good at it :)

  • ...Looks like an acoustic guitar.

  • ha ha! no it doesn't! 8)

  • i called it a prototype mostly because i had never made one before, and i was going to run a workshop for 20 kids, with each kid making one within the timeframe of one hour. i posted the videos so the camp i was going to do it for could see i was serious. i wound up using cigar boxes, grounding bars, and street sweeper tines, and everyone took one home. i would have worked with tuning them and doing performances if i had more time.

  • think of it like making pizza. you can go out and pay $15 to $20 for something that is made of flour, water, tomato sauce and cheese; or you can learn how to make them yourself with much saving, as well as a sense of accomplishment...

  • Except the pizza analogy doesn't work because pizza parlors have really hot ovens that make the crust crispy and delicious.

  • @thesilenceofduchamp Plus my homemade pizzas are better than anything you can buy!

  • Hello, this is a great idea and instrument.

I have a question, someone below commented that it is an electrical buss that is holding the pins in place.

I have multiple tin boxes and bobby pins, but I can't seem to be able to find that silver rectangle with the pins/screws in it. My local hardware store told me to go to a car shop. (not very helpful)

Any suggestions or clarifications would be very very appreciated.

    Thanks

    -Ash

  • I was wondering the same thing.

  • home depot has them in different lengths. Ive bought them before. Hope it helps

  • sounds like leekay music :)

  • thats cool how did you get it so 'bassy'?

  • I think that came from the mechanics of the box and the placement of the whole, possibly? I could be completely wrong..

  • love the way you incorperated the electrical buss
