  • I now have goosebumps

  • I now have goosebumps

  • Phil Keaggy is the Greatest Acoustic Guitarist of All-time! Plus he is a True Gentleman too... Every single time I hear this Masterpiece while my eyes closed, “a panoramic picture of subtle wind flowing across a vast wheat field & gently kissing the wheat” automatically appears in front of me! (The Best Part is the Breathtaking ‘Pull off’ at 0min57sec) 

  • I love it when someone is missing a finger and is told "you can't do that!" and you know what? They become the BEST!

  • Phil Keaggy is The Greatest Acoustic Guitarist of All-time!

  • Who cares about what Jimi thought of Phil? He had his staple on all rock music that came after him and he wrote catchy, memorable songs, but he was not a great guitarist. He was not accomplished like Phil.

  • These are the most beautiful chords I have heard in a very long time!

  • Hmm. I heard it was Eric Clapton; not Hendrix.

  • Silly myth after all, although I would imagine Jimi would of been just as impressed as most are by Mr Keaggy had he actually had a chance to listen to his material at some point of his life had he lived.

  • Beautiful

  • Decent

    Good

    Great

    Awesome

    Unbelievable

    Impossible

    Keaggy

  • actually supposedly jimi said that abiut terry kath of chocago, rory gallagher from ireland and several others Truth is he did say he liked Kath and chicago becuz of horns but the other stories are urban legends...doubt if he even knew about Phil

  • @mjsmcd He knew about Phil because Phil's first group recorded their first album at his recording studio. However, they never met because Hendrix died a few weeks before they were to record.

  • 15 people cannot appreciate talent

  • whats that for a guitar?

  • @oldrabbit95 It's a James Olsen - delicious tone, hand-built. If money were no object, I'd choose one, but they cost $1000s :-(

  • Am I the only one who wan't to know how he lost part of his finger? Time to search it up!

  • @micalishis It was from an accident on the farm when he was 7 I think I remember hearing. It was from a water pump

  • @Bradyarch Four, actually - listen to the words of Way Back Home.

  • @M400fan Oh nicely done. The Wikipedia on him has no age

  • i want to see Phil and Steve Howe jam together! it would be the greatest duo ever!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Best guitarist ever.

  • @TheBigKat77

too bad Michael Hedges owns that distinction, though Keaggy is absolutely stunning...

  • Phil is the best guitarist ever

  • Wow, this guy is a great talent, a shame he pigeonholed himself to just christian music.

  • @MerkinMuffly I understand where you are coming from, he is very under appreciated by the music community, simply because his "market" is limited. But I am sure that Phil enjoys where he is, and as a Christian, I can honestly say he is having, and has had, a huge impact in his ministry.

  • My god this is amazing. Such skill! My brain and hands are aching just imagining the blood sweat and tears that surely must have gone into this man's practice regimen. Nietzsche said that life without music would have been a mistake. Hearing this guy's music pretty much cements that notion for me.

  • Praise the Lord!:D This is beautiful!

  • I've been playing guitar for over 30 years and although I can eventually learn how to play almost anything with patience and time, Phil's music is unbelievably difficult to mimic mainly because of the insanely difficult fingering (stretches!). If you play guitar, you know what I'm talking about. To play those chords so cleanly is unreal.

  • I played piano at Phil Keaggy's sister-in-laws wedding in the early 1990's. It was at my church in Akron, Ohio. I will never forget warming up on the baby grand piano with a bit of Debussy's Children's Corner. I was astonished when Phil, the rock guitarist came around the piano and asked if I was playing 'Debussy's Doctor Gradus ad Parnassum from Children's Corner.

  • I agree that teh debate over who is the greatest guitarist is pointless. There are so many great players. Phil for me is my favourite because I love his compositions and the celtic influences he brings in. It's hard to replicate 'pretty' in jazz or blues. Phil is also able to work in other genres. I guess the next one for me is Steve Hackett but there are so many greats - we live in a priveleged age with access to so much good music.

  • Why are the two top comments entirely contradictory of each other?

  • Now realized that I need to cut my middle finger to play like this........

  • words...will not suffice

  • Well he is definitely the best guitarist with 9 fingers.

  • @gratefulgracy that actually could be a true statement

  • @gratefulgracy One of the best acoustic guitar players. Period. Such a beautful heartfelt sound.

  • this song is majestic. Tells a story of serenity and beauty.

  • 14 people prefer the interpretive dance version of this song.

  • Reed Arvin wrote the Book "Wind in the Wheat". He was also Rich Mullin's producer and is a phenomenal pianist. This song reminded me of the story set in Rose Hill, Kansas, about Andrew Miracle. It is a good read and I think Phil and Reed are friends.

  • Phil Keaggy has a testicle on each fingertip. That's why he's better than anyone. Ever.

  • I don't know if he's the best, but he's the best I've ever heard. And I've heard some amazing shit.

  • I can play this blindfolded and with one hand

  • @brokecommie05 So you use you foot to pick the strings?

  • @brokecommie05

I can aswell - but it doesn't sound nearly as good

  • anyone know what tuning he is in?

  • @conorfeekery Eb standard i believe, capo 2nd fret, alt. E standard and a capo at 1st, or if u have super lights open F in 5ths no capo i think it was recorded that way

  • I have "Wind in the Wheat" by Phil on a vinyl record when it first came out. I love this and it does make me dream of a field of wheat blowin in the wind. He's truly VERY good and does it for the Lord.

  • From rock to folk to jazz to classical, this is no other guitarist I know of that has mastered every single genre... so does that make him the best? Is he a better Jazz guitarist than Pat Metheny? Is he a better folk guitarist than Bruce Cockburn? Is he a better fusion guitarist than Al Dimeola? Maybe not 'better' within each genre, but the reason why people call him the greatest is that he stands up against anyone in any genre on any day - period.

  • Love and miss ya Phil! Joe Sabolick~

  • Phil's not the best guitarist, he's just a brother who knows how to use the gift he's been given to bring glory to God, who just happens to the best ever. :) Amen?

  • @aerycksmusic Amen.

  • wow, that is beautiful

  • Nice fret markers on Phil's guitar.

  • "RATING GUITAR PLAYERS IS A STUPID HOBBY" Frank Zappa

  • "RATING GUITAR PLAYERS IS A STUPID HOBBY" Frank Zappa

  • The world's greatest ice cream is vanilla or is it chocolate? Who cares. Music, too, is not a competition. Check out Paco de lucia for the "world's greatest guitarist." However, he does not move me like PK does - nor is his music a glory to God. These conversations about "the greatest" remind me of the movie "Dead Poets Society." They use this rubric to rate the poets. "TS Eliot is good, but not much to dance to....!" Thanks for the opportunity to vent. Blessings! Ken

  • @shilohrenovation Everyone knows the world's greatest ice cream is chocolate chip cookie dough.

  • I was able to find "The Master & The Musician" and "The Wind & The Wheat" both on CD, both are incredibly hard to find, but worth the effort. "Sunday's Child" is rare as well. He doesn't make even a mediocre album, they're all phenomenal. I met him in 1991 for my 25th birthday, he's an incredible soul, too.

  • Phil Keaggy has mastered the art of music. He's always been one of the the most influential guitarists I've ever known. His playing, especially on an acoustic guitar, is full of soul and is heartfelt and genuine. When I saw this video, I nearly literally cried because I felt his playing and how soulful it was (or still is).

  • The tunning is Eb Standar ... capo in 2 fret

  • I would have a very difficult time actually classifying someone as "the best guitarist ever", however Phil Keaggy is definitely at the top of my list. He's an amazing artist!

  • what kind of acoustic is that... its like sweet, sweet love to my ears.

  • truely one of the most beautiful pieces ever written for guitar. And definitely not easy to play. There is learning the notes and chords which takes some time. Took me about 2-3 months. then there is the feel , which takes years to perfect as Phi has done. For those who want to give it a whirl, you can get the tab from a book called "Phil Keaggy acoustic solos' published by Mel Bay. just google mel bay music. Awesome

  • What video is this from

  • Praise the Lord. His love for Jesus is displayed in a unique form that only God can present through one who loves Him.

  • Praise the Lord. His love for Jesus is displayed in a unique form that only God can present through one who loves Him.

  • This is not too hard to learn, but damnit - I can't begin to imagine what it took to come up with it...

  • I don't think he has ever written a single song since he has been saved caring about what people might think about his skill. Worrying about skill is missing the boat. It is about devotion to a God, calling, and principle. He doesn't care if you think he is great or not. I don't think God does either. Not everything is a human competition.

  • This is a good song, though Phil Keaggy is not the best guitarist ever...

  • @mscof789 well, there can be no real thing as the 'best guitarist ever...' - he's damn good, though :)

  • Phil, I have lyrics I have written to this.

  • i saw phil when i was but a mere child of 18 years old ,and his guitar playing has left a life long impression on me.

  • I don't know if it's true but I heard years ago that back in the day Jimi gave it up for Phil Keaggy when asked how it felt to be the greatest guitarist.....???? Something like that....

  • @withfootnotes Eddie Van Halen was ascribed that quote as well. The closest similarity was shortly after Phil's Glass Harp days when Ted Nugent openly expressed that he'd wondered where Phil had gone and that Phil "could've saved the world with his guitar". Phil had first set foot in Electric Lady Land shortly after Hendrix passed away, Hendrix never heard Phil play.

  • @withfootnotes figures :/ either way, he IS a great guitarist. Thanks though for setting me straight on that.

  • He is amazing. Give a thumbs up to this comment. Consider it an ironic turn of events... you know... considering he has only 4 fingers. ooohh. too soon?

  • Beautiful playing, song, and sound. Love it!

  • Who is this master of the guitar?

    He understands music

  • Wow, this is so beautiful...I luv it ^_^

  • is mr. keaggy a roman catholic?

  • @roaringwaterbay He was raised a Roman Catholic but has tended to attend non-denom and Protestant charismatic churches over the years since his conversion in 1970.

  • @roaringwaterbay No, he was "raised" as an RC but is a "Born Again" Christian since 1970.

  • Damn that's sweet.

  • Amazing picking- hes missing a finger too!

  • Does anyone know where I can find and buy this song.

  • Comment removed

  • scary clothes. scary background, did not know they had cameras back in those days

  • @lilrip4300 why is everything "scary" to you? That was the fashion of the day and the technology of the day. so what...

  • @MrsClippit hes good, great guitar playing even the fact that hes missing 1 finger its amazing, but just something about the atmosphere of these old kinda days with the dull colors and the hair do, its just a thing that freaks me out - like some sort of "gentlemen" from the titanic days, i dunno, great player tho the room or should i say "chamber" or even his garments needs some color lol

  • @lilrip4300 Trust me, there was nothing "dull" about the colors. It''s just the way it comes thru on film. It was a great time to be young. lol@your thoughts on it though :) I never heard anyone say that. LOL. no worries

  • Incredibly great talent and beautiful song....thank you for sharing.

  • michael hedges is so amazing too.

  • If you can play this song with no flaws like he can, then you shouldnt be talking, I cant play this song myself as good, and ive been playing for 15 years. Eric Clapton stated that Phil Keaggy was his favorite guitarist. Phil Keaggy's music is more than music Its spirit.,

  • very underrated. I still think antoine dufour is the best in the world

  • WTF he's very underrated! :(

  • Genius!!!

  • I cannot even express how lame it is to try to come back at me two months later with such a flimsy, this and useless retort. You ... are pathetic.

  • DOVE INLAYS!!!

  • Beautiful!

Some people just do not understand God anointed music!

  • Incredibly beautiful. I don't know how anyone could not like this ;>

  • Fantastic! Thanks Phil - I love the little RCA dog listening so intently :0)

  • This is sooo beautiful and melodic!

  • Tabs aren't ANYWHERE!

  • @IamaRifle imo its probably easier to figure out by watching I figured out most of it that way.

  • @Toy8ox But the way he shifts for hammerons is covered up by the camera angle. I can only get so much.

  • @IamaRifle True..I had to guess at a couple parts.

  • Absolutely lovely...

  • Your music and this album especially will forever hold a very dear place in my heart. Thank you.

  • Mick Taylor - Sway solo 1991 Live That will blow your mind

  • Some people are just meant to play guitar. I feel like this is one of those people.

  • One of the sad things is that there are so many talented people out in this world who have so much potential, yet they use it for the pleasure of the world and not for Jesus Christ, the creator. Thats why we were created people, to glorify God. You all have a potential always remember that.

  • I believe it went this way Johnny Carson asked Jimi Hendrix how it felt to be the greatest guitar player in the world and Hendrix just said " I don't know go ask Phil Keaggy"

  • Perhaps, as says sts, I am wrong. To ZenCat2: Yes, it is on an album entitled The Wind and the Wheat. Hey, Frens, a Phil Keaggy song, by any othername; any name at all, would still sound as sweet. I am so grateful for these postings.

  • Is this version actually on an album recording somewhere?

  • @ZenCat2 it's on 'The wind and the wheat'.. 'Beyond Nature' is also a must have.

  • @ZenCat2 The Wind and The Wheat is a whole album with this being the title track.

  • Mozart, Keaggy, Bach.. thats the way people should associate Keaggy with other greats.

  • 14 people hate guitar music and somehow ended up on this video.

  • While very beautiful, the song in this clip is not The Wind In The Wheat. It is my hope that someone will, indeed post it.

  • @otherlyn Wrong... it's the correct song...

  • Jimi said this guy was the best guitarist he knew. After watching this vid i would have to agree.

  • does anyone have sheet music or tabs for this song?

  • 14 people can'not make several slash chords =)

  • Does anyone know what tuning this is in?

  • @originalname33 Oh Yeah, no "beliefs" (per se), except for that, ummm, "blind faith" in the infinitely "limited" knowledge that was taught to them in college! Wow. Modern physics accounts for 1-9 dimensions, "parellel", to ours (that YOU can't see, measure, or detect...), it doesn't even account for all the truths that "we" (you) don't even know, and haven't even conceived of yet (dufus)!... I'm gonna go out on a limb here, and say it's actually "BAD SCIENCE", to claim that you know it all.

  • @MindofMadMax

first off, you have no life to dig up a 2 year old comment.

and what the hell are you really talking about? you put the term "bad science" in quotes even though I didn't state this, and of course you wasted your time making a comment because you don't understand CONTEXT.

it's actually pretty easy. science is objective. you're confusing yourself with arbitrary subjective terms thus speculating on science in a unscientific way.

the only explanation is a big ego on your behalf.

  • @originalname33 I have a life, I swear! I didn't realize I was commenting so far back (it's all on the same page after all). I was also confrontational, I apologize. What I'm actually saying is that even "science" (whether hard or theoretical), doesn't necessarily excluding the possibility of a being like God, existing, it's just evidence of this existence can't presently be quantified. Understanding of this "material" universe, never mind the "immaterial" universe(s), is still very limited

  • I agree with that. science is observatory so it's based on the five senses. there's obviously something more you know that even if you're an atheist you don't just end, you like all energy can't be destroyed.

  • @dwainagain You mean, it's like trying to tell a stranger about... God?

  • @pineapplezzandstuff BELIEVE, my friend, believe! That's "exactly" what the PHILMEISTER desires...

  • Thanks for sharing. This music helps to find peace.

  • Thanks for sharing. This music helps to finds peace.

  • Forget all your problems for almost two minutes

  • @ZioPanik Two minutes? I can't even find a reliable internet hardcount to all the music he has released, and/or contributed to... It's in the hundreds. This man just cannot put down a freakin' guitar, for even a few days...!

  • awesome, im the 1000th person to like this. what an honor

  • The guitar in the video is an Olson guitar. Mr Keaggy is pictured with this guitar on the Olson website. Phil presented Paul McCartney with a left handed Olson a few years back.

  • @dwainagain Sir Paul was always a major influence to Phil, check out Phil's version of Paul's "Motor of Love", on Keaggy's "Inseparable" album!

  • That guitar may be a Gurian. The lone letter at the top of the peg head looks like a "G", which is the Gurian logo. I bought one back in the early eighties. I'll never part with it. I believe they stopped manufacturing them a while back. Paul Simon and James Taylor both use guitars with the identical logo as Phil's guitar.

  • does anyone know the guitar that he is using in this clip?

  • @dobsonone Definitely an Olson.

  • Not mention the insanely beautiful guitar!

  • This song is such a perfect example of what makes me believe that PK is and always will remain among the top 10 guitarists of all time and my personal favorite. It isn't sweep picking and a bunch of after effects. It is only moderately difficult to play but the way he plays so perfectly and makes every single note sound out so beautifully is truly the mark of a master guitarist.

  • man! this is an old video! I saw him at my church about a month ago HE IS AMAZING!!!!!!!

  • I call him Stretch:)

  • Greatest song of all times 4 real

  • i love that chord at 0:50

  • Comment removed

  • Very nice. Too short though. Could also use some cowbell.

  • @daven58100 No cowbell ... Mr Keaggy's work is best listened to by itself, without any kind of accompaniment. You could throw in the whole Trans-Siberian Orchestra, but it wouldn't be as good as him by himself.

I've seen him in concert, and seen the TSO in concert. As epic as the orchestra was, it's not Phil Keaggy.

  • The wind and the Triticum .

  • holy christ the 3 notes he pick at 0:42 are nuff for me, boner.

  • I know I will get a bunch of thumbs down for this, but this is harder than any Andy Mckee song.

  • @randomchap100 Andy Mckee is great but, your right. IMO Phill Keaggy is the greatest guitarist on the planet even though I love Andy Mckee.

  • I would say it's just an other thing. He got more classical feel.

  • @randomchap100

sigh, when will people realise that "harder" or faster does not mean better and has no place in musical discussion. how hard a piece is to play depends on the player. you are correct in saying that i would find this piece harder than some mckee songs but i could easily see andy playing this but phil playing ebon coast or art of motion? no way. not that it matters in any way.

  • @randomchap100 I'm not going to give you a thumbs down since everyone is entitled to their opinion but having tried to learn Art of Motion and this I can say I spent significantly longer on Art of Motion for half the progress. Less than half.

  • @randomchap100 No, it isn't.

  • @DJSNuva1 Andy Mckee is amazing but, Phil Keaggy plays guitar much much more dynamically and controls the tone's of the guitar much better than Andy Mckee. Playing this song WELL is far more difficult than any Andy Mckee song.

  • Comment removed

  • @DJSNuva1 Don Ross is amazing. Candyrat should do something for him like what they did for Andy Mckee's "Art Of Motion" album where they videotaped him recording it. I think that's one of the reasons why Mckee is so much more well known.

  • @17MJG93 I agree with you.

  • @17MJG93 On second thought, Keaggy is probably the best guitarist ever... Period.

  • @DJSNuva1 I wouldn't say that. He has some badass compositions, but hey. He tunes his stuff differently, and uses a capo. He's is mos def not the best in EADGBE tuning. But he is brilliant for using the tool how he does. I can't play like him, but I havn't experiemented much either.

  • @RoufasthaSage Dude, seriously...lets NOT have this be the 10,000th video where someone says “this guy is the best ever” and then some other guy says, “he’s not” and proceeds to list arbitrary reasons why this guy isn’t the best. To DJSNuva1, Phil is the best guitarist ever....to you, maybe not...but just leave the guy think what he wants without adding your two cents. Not every youtube video is a debate, and while you’re entitled to your opinion, you don’t have to always broadcast it. Peace

  • @shwalton75 If you don't like me adding my two cents, then why did you add three?

  • @shwalton75 you just broadcasted your opinion! let him broadcast his...end of discussion!

  • @shwalton75 amen and peace. Guitarist wannabes should just shut up and play or shut up and listen. we miss the music!!

  • @shwalton75 I know and understand. Regardless of idiot rankings and competion I'm not a hater, and I can appreciate. This composition is brilliant and moves me either way. I was jus sayin'.... And I'm always soul searching. I just thought of a good phrase for the scenario. "nobody is the best in a world full of change". Take care and keep the negativety out your life. Anybody watching this is on a good start.

  • @shwalton75 DUDE, seriously shut the fuck up.

  • Rolling stone once asked Jimmy Hendrix how does it feel to be the best guitarist in the World and his reply was

"I'm alright, but I'm no Phil Keaggy."

    Now that is some respect.

  • @megla69er It would be some respect, but it's not true. From Wikipedia... "it was impossible that Jimi Hendrix could ever have heard me...We...recorded our first album at Electric Lady Studios two weeks after his unfortunate death, so I just can’t imagine how he could’ve heard me. I think it’s just a rumor that someone’s kept alive, and it must be titillating enough to keep an interest there...So I don’t think it was said…and that’s it for that!"[6] from Wikipedia

  • @megla69er That is just a myth though! BTW, Phil Keaggy is an amazing guitarist in my opinion too!!

  • @megla69er false. snopes.com/music/artists/keaggy.asp i remember hearing that hendrix thing a few years back. hearing keaggy's pure, calming notes; i was fine hearing a guitar legend said such a thing about keaggy, but it's not true. but we know keaggy is a musician of the master.

  • @megla69er I don't know dude, by the time Jimi died, Phil wasn't even 20 years old - he had no major or even noticeable releases at that time, and there is no reason what so ever that Jimi woulda even heard about him. Also, I have heard that same story about probably 15 other guitarists :). Don't get me wrong, Keaggy kicks all those other guitarists ass...

  • @shwalton75 It's not even that you can't or shouldn't always broadcast it. It's that some people have yet to comprehend fully what an opinion is and what holding one means, and moreover, they refuse to even attempt such a comprehension.
