@jordanach46 they do have it, problem is...they can't turn their heads as fast. when your a kid playing you have to wear it cuz accidents happen. when your an adult, it's no longer your coachs job to baby you. AND you can't turn your head as quickly or look down right(the pad get's in your way). At the speed of hockey, it's almost as dangerous to react slowly.

I don't think goalies have to, although most chest guards have padding that goes up to the neck a bit, but I remember seeing, I believe khabibulin, take a shot to the neck in practice (pre-game warmups actually), and he doesnt wear that dangling plastic shield that you tie to your helmet, and he was on the ice for like 10 seconds and got back up.
