One day all the "molemen" came up from the ground and attacked all big cities around the earth. The gears (special troops) are the major (or only) defence of earth against the locust horde. The game is about that you are playing sergent Marcus Fenix and his squadron who put up a fight against the locust attackers. Hope that helped.:)
