As a racer myself, I knew all the dangers of racing motocross. But never ever thought that one day I would come off and brake my neck. I’m sure, Danny, David, myself and many others, not only riders but family as well, wish the neck brace had been invented along time ago.
SIT on a BIKE, NOT in a WHEELCHAIR. WEAR a NECK BRACE! It will Save your life.
I didn't know a flash bulb was part of the cause...I started racing my son at age 9. He started riding at 4. He is a rocket and uninjured. In 15 years 2 small injuries. In amateur racing in Calif he was 85% 1st-3rd in some150 races and we always raced GFI, CMA, CMC.. But what I've seen is too much. Even many guys like Ryan Morris, (sp) at age 12 had so many injuries and racing with a cast racing at age 13 or so. Seeing children die and friends paralysed at age 12 or so...But where's the race?!
The biggest risk that you will ever take is not taking one....As a racer myself, I knew the risk in the sport..I raced for around 10 years with basically no injuries. It looks like a car wreck has now ended my racing.I have a lower back injury, luckily it was only a torn disc, but it sure screwed up my racing and martial arts.I thought progress in spinal injuries was going well, but it seems like that type of cure keeps getting sidelined..Hopefully soon a cure will happen.
EVERYONE WHO RACES WEAR A NECK BRACE! I compression fractured my L5 and couldn't feel my legs, but luckily for me the swelling pinched my spinal cord and didn't sever it, so the feeling came back after the swelling subsided. I GOT LUCKY. 800 dollars for a nice neck braces versus hundreds of thousands in medical bills and the rest of your life in a wheelchair is a cheap price to pay.
Stand up for our crippled heroes to get a TYSABRI trial overseas.
TYSABRI aka natalizumab aka an alpha4beta1 blocking drug helps those with MS walk and when given to rats 2 hours after their spinal cords are broken & a few more doses gets them 50% of their lost LOCOMOTION.
Please join me in petitioning ur elected US officials to stop DENYING TYSABRI to those soldiers fighting for our FREEDOM!
ORIGIN CARE, Source of Specialist Care for People with Spinal Injuries. We provide 24 hour, live-in care services for people with spinal cord injuries.
When you take risks just know what can happen when it goes wrong, and don't go on and on about it afterwards when it does. You have to be stupid when you rides bikes for fun- FACT- Dumb foolsssss
@keenandwhat009 To say that you have to be stupid to ride bikes is a bit ridiculous. Its like saying its stupid to jet ski or drive a car. And Im sure that people that ride bikes are fully aware of how dangerous it can be.
Having been thru just a minor injury almost a year ago, I have a new respect and understanding for people that have been hurt. I know what I went thru - and it's nothing compared to what many others go thru. Keep the faith!
i have spinal cord injury as well. but it was not caused by intense activities. it was caused by bacterial infection. man, its been 8 months, although i can walk and run normally, my lower body is still tingling when i bend my neck.
Hard to comment - I'm not in anyone else's position. I don't fully know how difficult it is to be injured like that ... but I know it's much, much more than any of us can imagine.
Statistics can sometimes be misleading - for example, probably more people die in bathtubs that riding motorcycles.
You know what?!? FUCK ANYONE who says they won't let their kid ride motocross because they think its "dangerous."
No shit its dangerous! Its not like you're going to stop driving or let your kids drive just because there was a bad accident on the freeway or something.
It's not the same! in a car you have all that metel round you, you have nothing but your cloths on a bike. theres worse injury if you crash on abike, then there is in a car. I know which one i'd pick
But for some people and especially young kids I find unjustify the cruelty of becoming paralysed. Maybe to prevent them to be bad people in the future they had been punished in advance stage of life?
Some people are arrogant and they definetively deserve such kind of medicine during their life time. For example when I was 17 years old I saw one of my classmate with a very beautifull face and attracting all girls. But this guy was an arrogant and was allways making fun of gentle student like me. One day he didn't came at school and I came to learn that he drove illegally the car of his dad and met with an accident that left him paralysed from the belt to the feet.
it happens on dirt bikes..it's happens in many other sports too. "dirt bikes are dangerous", so is geting out of bed everyday. I work in a hospital & raced bikes for 14 years, the risks are there with anything, one could argue the increased risk, but I've seen really bad crashes with just scratches as a result. I see countless teens texting daily while driving. One was paralyzed in a wreck locally a few months ago relating to it. " I won't let my kids ride dirt bikes though. "Get out of here
@howieramzer oh come on. sure there are risks with everything even eating and drinking but riding a motorcycle much jumping a dirt bike exceeds any sort of risk that is reasonable. There is nothing wrong with doing these activities and no one deserves serious injury for it but the consequences should be weight more to most people who do them i think.
Motorbikes are dangerous, anyone that uses one risk losing there life. There not very safe, no mater how good you are you are gambling with your life.
I am a nurse and I DO FEEL HORRIBLE for these individuals. Nonetheless, people who do these types of HIGH risk sports are playing with their lives. It is a choice.
im about to cry a friend of mine ,juan gatito nimo, just one race tobe national champ, crashed on the whoops and now is in a wheelchair, all the future destroyed,it makes me truly sad.sorry for all people in this situation see 'juan gatito nimo ' in this channel, he cant walk , but he can ride a bike again,an irony.
my husband's brother, 28yrs old, broke c4 and c5 last sunday in a car crash in ethiopia. was airlifted to paris, where he is from. had surgery yesterday to put back the vertabra. he is tetraplegic and might need a trich for the rest of his life. we need to know everything and every possible rehab for this superman...
my fiance suffered c4/c5 complete injury in 2005. they told him he would always have his trach and feeding tube due to the level of injury he sustained. thankfully he got the opportunity to go to shephard center in atlanta georgia. this place is a god send for people with sci. jason still has no movement below his neck, but he does NOT have a trach or feeding tube. they are wonderful!
I really hope there will be a cure very soon for all the thousands who suffer in silence

pure bullshit, all the great motocross riders get millions of camara flashes on their eyes, and it doesnt seem to bother them, just admit that you failed the landing, stupid mistake for showing off. thats it.
Showing off?! He did a one hander, What about Travis Pastrana's backflip over the finish line. You could see that David was dis-orientated. If you have ever been in dull light, and then you see bright white flash, you cannot see for a moment, that moment costed him his freedom to walk and ride.
Don't blame him, blame the photographer, I would sue his pants off.
wow thats a really good vid...very touching to....makes me think about ever racing again after breaking what i already have...but u cant go through life in a shell right,,...
?? so i i gues ill never stop riding...its a life style
when i raced in the early 80,s magoo chandler,d baily and bob hannah where just my hero,s,they where the best there was, david baily is proving just what a complete man he is,i saw a vidio the other day of him riding in 2006, going over jumps with a frame on the bike, also winning triathons, this guy is still my hero more than ever, the muhummad ali of motocross, and a insperation to anyone who thinks lifes tough.
I was a teenager back when Magoo got hurt. My memory is that it happened outside the US and his medical insurance was only good for racing in the US so it went real bad for him.
After John, a friend of mine was paralized in a motocross crash I contacted David, and he imediately called him in the hospital. We spent the day at the Indy supercross with David. I later injured my back racing. It was just a herniated disc, I couldnt imagine worse. If you see this David, you made a diference with John. Thanks Jason #92
i was riding my m/bike on the way to work when i was hit head on by a drunk, uninsured driver. i suffered a t2break,t3dislocation and have no sensation from the chest down. its not just on the track but the roads too, i believe that he would of hit me if i was even in a car! i know the difference would of been me walking

I found this video after receiving an email from Ryan at Mahoney. I would like to thank you for the education. It is a very scary subject for me and I am sure many others. If you have any ideas or something I could post on my website please email me at Nathan plus my username.
Thanks for the input. I think a lot of people that don't fully look into it, especially all the facets (like stem cell research), will only go by what they 'heard' or 'read' briefly. And I think for us (like me and you and David and others) our job is to maybe help educate. Thanks again!
