Every night on News we saw Kids sent for tins of Water being deliberately shot dead-legs etc and tagetted, when UK French German apc's were used to let them cross tjhe roads safely then they used to bounce rifle slugs under the apc's to hit the Civilians legs instead!, seriously! so they had to weld on extra steel skirts to stop bullet wounding the folks., these Serbians dogs were 'supposed' to be Christians i am ashamed to say, targetting mainly Muslims but were people from all groups there.

French German Dutch Englich troops tried desperately to give protection, the Civilians had no 20mm or larger artillery to reach the Serb gunmen in the hills, A new invention Sky Scan battlefield radar was what really stopped them, traced every single Serbian shell-bullet to it's source/firer then 5 rounds of 105mm shells would land on them a few seconds later GOODBYE SERBIANS!, this is finally what killed and stopped those sniping dogs, though much too late most would agree!.

Great post Wind4Watts! I did not know this, but was glad to hear there was a way to stop those who preyed on civilians. Those cowardly snipers killed countless women and children and they deserved some 105mm on their assess!

Besides, Sarajevo was a huge military encampment. Everyone there was in some way involved with the moslem army military effort, thus making them all legit targets. UN should not have involved

UN soldiers are allowed to return fire in self-defence when fired upon and the sniper opened fire at the peacekeepers (you can hear the bullet ricochet in the video).

here they are allowed to fire to disperse a group of soldiers firing over their heads to intimidate them, not on them.

Police have just about the same ROE as peacekeepers and if you - as you say it - fire a shot over the police's head to intimidate them they will fucking kill you!

To fire you need three conditions: immediate response, proportionate and justified.

Here the blue helmets ask permission before shooting, as is the rule., because They are no longer in self-defense in the legal sense.

I do not know what country you are, but in France a police officer fired if he is in danger (the aggressor is being stabbed, or fire point-blank.)

In the area there are civilians. Why destroy an entire area to kill one sniper? One shot was enough to neutralize it. Rules of engagement minimize collateral damage. Peacekeeping mission is not to destroy everything and sort later.

France is known to operate successfully the task of peacekeeping (ex-Yugoslavia, Cote d'Ivoire, Central Africa ...)

@DuguesclinBZH maybe the peacekeepers should have aimed their weapons, for a start. then neutralized the snipers in the surrounding hillsides, where there were no longer any friendlies. instead of just photo ops for the journalists ? put the cross-hairs on the genocidal nuts firing at you, and end the problem.

Yea, the situation was different from Iraq, and these are UN troops; A single collateral casualty could have let to a scandal and the one responsible would probably have had to stand trial.
