Guitars are never perfectly "in tune". They use the equal tempered scale which cheats a little on the perfect harmonics.

I love Steve Vai's music very much, but I have to admit the first two minutes are pretty awful, and it's only good towards the end.

He's sound is very off for some sort of a reason, not enough tone, and he plays too much with he's whammy down (instead of up).

Still he gives a great performance =)

wow, what a keen, discerning crowd here. He sounded in tune to me. I mean, I heard one sour chord and maybe a note slipped here or there, but he is CLEARLY in tune. And yes, he's playing to a back track so there is no way to slightly change the tempo of the phrases like a real band would.

yes the tune is a little. i think its the backing track tuning wasnt synced to his guitar. i doubt he didnt check his guitar tuning, come on its, steve vai. he didnt check his guitar tuning prior to a performance? gotta be kidding rite? im not saying he doesnt do mistakes but tuning is the most basic thing even we amatuers do prior to jamming in a studio, let alone a gig and a big concert right?

GUYS.. his guitar isnt out of tune,

he tuned down 1/2 half step, because the drummer has lower tuned heads and cymbals, hes a little lower than the record, but not OUT OF TUNE, just in tune with the drum and recorded bass.

@GSXReaper46 Not really, when you travel from America to Europe or Asia guitars and pianos have to be slighty tuned again or in this case maybe the audio is not properly helping the guitar sound. Aparently the guitar sounds fine, but in certains chords you can hear its slightly half chord below the actual note.

Yea, his sound is trying to come through, you can hear it, but for some reason, there was definitely a sonic problem somewhere. I also think that without his ship and crew, his 4th dimensional qualities of his sound failed to come through, thus contributing to the tunal deficiencies.

he did :| even he said in interviews that he started slowing down years ago. part of it is making a demand of himself on purpose by challenging himself at all times. "how dare he get bored with playing a song". but he's 50 years old. he's learned a shitload of techniques and he's can really show a lot of emotion with just one note. I imagine the older he gets the more sloppy he'll become, but Im sure he'll make up for it. he's still my favorite guitar player.

It sounds like the audio stream for this broadcast was taken directly from the desk with minimal sound coming from the mic'd amps. I would hope it would sound much better being in the audience. It's so muffled, and you can hear every tiny error. I still love Vai though!
