nope, thats not what i said--i said the beat was.

actually, though, if you are interested, the snare is from african origin. the first snare was derived from a regular drum, but they used the guts (intestines, usually, im pretty sure) from animals as the wires on the lower head.

i think the hi-hat started in the early 1900s in America because in early dixieland music, the hihat was actually a "low hat" because it only came up to about shin height and was only played with the foot--no sticks.
