Atheist technically is not a belief, and yes never be ashamed. Although I think he meant he was embarrassed to be associated with atheists who complain that people judge them and then they judge others. They have the same mentality of those that are christian and call all atheist pagans and evil. Yes every side has extremists and not one side is right 100% of the time. -just saying-
Never be ashamed to be an atheist if you are they win atheist is our belief i strongly exercise it not for benefit but ti show that you cant push your religion us. just stay strong to your beliefs.
Here's the logic behind your questioning - Christianity is attacked by western atheists because it's the biggest religion in the western world. So a lot of atheists like to use whatever they can to bring it down, even another religion like Islam. I bet if Islam was the biggest religion in the west, western atheists would try using Christianity to bring Islam down.
I am not saying that I know you are incorrect? But where did you find information about atheists' support of the mosque? I'm not crazy about the mosque, the crosses, or churches. I wonder how successful any of these construction projects would be if tax except status were revoked from religious institutions.
Are you a dumbstain, too? Atheists didn't take down the memorial crosses. THE FUCKIN' COURT DID. Because they are unconstitutional. The Utah state government placed them, at taxpayer expense. And put them on public property. Both are big no-no's in this nation guided by a religion-neutral CONSTITUTION.
I'm agnostic I'll admit, so I'll take that in to account, but I wish many atheists would stop being fucking hypocrites. First of all, they mention "separation of church and state" but then they want to destroy the church altogether, so they're being as invasive on religious rights as the christian/islamic right, if only atheists as a whole would show example and leave other religions alone, it's not a religion!
I don't know, I generally don't side against a ruling supporting secular government. It's not just an atheist issue, it effects all non-Christian religions as well. I guess the real question is whether anyone even gave the crosses a second thought before these lawyers started sticking there nose in and creating a problem where there really wasn't one.
What do you know about Christianity ? have you been to other countries ? other Christian countries. you are protected because there is separation between Church and state.
The Utah situation is an issue because those memorials were built on public land with taxpayer dollars. The mosque is funded with private money and will be built on private land, the two situations can't really b compared.
"Two men behind the cross project have said they selected crosses for the memorials because the image of a cross can simultaneously convey a message of death, remembrance, honor, gratitude and sacrifice.
In 2006, the Utah Legislature passed a joint resolution declaring the cross a nonreligious secular symbol of death."
Did you read the article? ONLY CROSSES were allowed as a memorial, other religious symbols were not, perhaps if Utah was more tolerant and allowed other religious symbols to be displayed they wouldn't be having this problem.
I agree with most of what you said up. However, christianity IS the most dangerous threat to mankind because it continues to degrade and pervert our society with its mythology based morals. Large portions of the followers of christianity are trying to turn science on its head with Intelligent Design in schools, enact bizarre laws like in Texas, the DOMA, Prop 8, Texas School Board acts, as well as teach that mankind should seek information from a book rather than from the scientific evidence.
I watched it ! "Live and let live within the bounds of reason" I like that ! You can be philisophical ;-)
I say let them have their Mosque. It's not worth fighting over. We have bigger fish to fry. And removing memorial crosses is just wrong. Unless the police officers were atheists and didn't want them. What next remove religious headstones from graveyards.
@RDaneelOlivaw2 I've had the live and let live thing stuck in my head since Orygyn said it to me. I'm pretty far from actually doing it, but trying isn't hurting. I don't think all of the officers were christian. I personally wouldn't give a fuck if I died and my family put on cross on my grave or whatever. I'd be dead, and it'd make them happy. But then some asshole comes along and is like "thats unconstitutional" .....I can't finish this without ghost internet tough guy talk. U know.
If you cannot discern the difference between "the mosque" and "the roadside crosses," then that is a BIG BLACK STRIKE against your analysis skills and your (cough) intellect.
to the one who said people are atheists because of conservitive christian familys .. i grew up in a household where we never went to church, and hardly ever prayed or said race or anything ... i was an agnostic since i was 6 and questioned god as far back as i can remember ... and when i actually stepped away from the faith, after a long battle of self confliction with it .. my stress level decreased and i was no longer suicidal
@baxterman My whole atheist story is somewhat similar to yours. I've noticed though a number of more vocal atheists do fall into the whole conservative christian family escape type scenario though. Its kinda like old war veterans sitting around and thats all they ever seem to talk about (its not that bad but its a little bit similar) You get "trapped" in something for so long and then you're free of course you're gonna talk
@HomoCyborgZombie Yeah, they are on public property, and I do agree with you on christianity being a threat politically, thats another reason i think that was a bad idea to go to so much effort to get them taken down. Its bad press for "us", and something that I feel may cheapen attempts at making meaningful changes, when they can reference stuff like this. Pick your battles, thats my feeling.
I totally agree with PhilosophicalTwerks. The memorial was paid for with private funds - it can be there. So is the community center being built near Ground Zero. I agree that Islam is arguably more of a threat than Christianity, but this is just a community center they're building, for fuck's sake.
I fucking hate shit like this. Not the video of course, I love it when you talk about serious topics, but when people who act like they are representing Atheists as a whole pull ridiculous shit like this.
@Kwinnky To be fair, I really really try (although fail quite often) to be more of "it if doesn't hurt or affect me or other people, its cool" or like "live and let live" Problem is, with Islam, its tricky. I can't really think of a reason to be pro Islam.
Dude, didn't you notice that you went and bought a defective cap? The bill was sewn on the opposite side of what should have been. Or are we looking at the back of your head? With that soul patch I'm not sure.
Well even though I'm anti Gzero terror mosque I couldn't agree more about the roadside crosses, someone call the aclu and the sothern law poverty center quick !(or whatever it's called) pfft!
@Curas1 I think I would've been ok with (considering that it is technically unconstitutional or whatever) saying "look, we can compromise. the crosses can stay and be grandfathered (out of decency) but from this point forward we need a different secular symbol. There are appeals going on and people actively trying to get a freakin memorial taken down.
They think the pro Islam stuff shows that they are open minded and tolerant. The same type of shit would happen in my college class rooms. They would be raging against the pro lifers one second and finding excuses for a woman being stoned to death for being raped the next second. People tend to be sheep no matter what label they slap on themselves.
@StrapOnDildoSexRulez The whole point of this was to say "let them have their crosses, its just wrong not to" I don't see how thats anti christian at all..
@Kwinnky I understand the legal part of it, you're right. Its not that bothers me so much as how relentless American Atheists are over getting it done. Another thing is, most of the people in that area are mormon. As far as thunderf00t, his time and intellect could be far better spent researching and debunking islam and the qu'ran like he did creation science than what he has been doing.
@PhilosophicalTwerks I have to agree with you there. TF is wasting his and our time with his videos he's been doing. I feel I'm watching a propaganda reel or something. I don't think dpr is as bad or angry as some. Personally, I prefer aronra videos.
I got a phone call while typing this up and totally lost track of what I was thinking! :)
@melbn I really shouldn't have said that, but I seriously wouldn't be suprised to see him pull something like this, after the orignal VFX apologizes to the internets. Him and TF00t made Shawn believe legal action could have been taken against him, when it couldn't of been (unregistered copyright, couldn't have "sued" him. I can provide a ref if you want) . Thats just a personal feeling I have towards him, I'm not in the business of actively tryingt to get anyone to share that feeling.
the problem with the crosses, was NOT that they were crosses, but that they were crosses paid for by the public, WITH utahs state symbol on it.
which gives an obvious link between the government and christianity.
btw they were not '12 little crosses' they were multiple 12 foot tall crosses.
if the families of the fallen patrolmen had put up the crosses without the utah beehive on it, i would have been perfectly fine with it.

I'm an Atheist from Utah and have some mixed feelings about the whole taking down the memorial crosses thing.
The thing we have to realize is most of those fallen policemen are Mormons.
Mormons don't use the cross as a religious symbol. To them it is kind of tacky.
So, it is actually reasonable to say, "Hey this is disrespectful, not to Atheists, but to the officers who died there."
It would be kind of like someone placing a Star of David on my memorial.
