the ocean is a sponge, and can hold more CO2, but what happens when the threshold hits, and it cant hold no more, (by then the ocean would have changed PH)

What does "past" climate change have to do with whether CO2 can drive climate? Certainly other phenomenon have induced climate change in the past, but so what? IF CO2 increase can trap sufficient additional heat, you're going to get climate change. Disregarding CO2 simply because past changes weren't initiated by it is simply idiotic.

@fusedchromosome Watch the documentary all the way to the end. It explains how CO2 changes occur after temperature changes which is immediately preceded by variations in sunspots. Sunspots correlate and - more importantly - precede temperature change throughout history.

I'm well aware of temp usually leading CO2. That's to be expected. My point was that you can't use that to "assert" that CO2 couldn't lead temp, which is what those two bozos did. The fact that CO2 is transparent to incoming solar radiation and not outgoing infrared means that it will tend to raise temp, i.e. CO2 can lead temp. It's a positive feedback loop. The only "real" question is: is it capable of producing significant changes in temp?

P2) It's basic physics. Also, you should read up on the Paleocene Eocene Thermal Maximum in which CO2 lead temp. You can also watch Durkin getting grilled on all the goofs he had to correct. His attention to accuracy and intellectual honesty was sub-par at best.

That assertion is the epitome of stupid. Just because ice cores show past natural processes causing temp increase followed by CO2 increase does not automatically negate whether CO2 increase can cause temp to rise. He's a dipshit.

Money isn't evil, but living for money certainly is. I can't relate to anyone who tries to convince me it's perfectly reasonable to deal with/sell representations of a representation of exchange of commodities. At the same time, there's many humans out there who are mere commodities, their only function is to produce what makes human progress possible. And they die early, just like factory workers did 150 years ago. Also, fossil fuels will become less availabe; firstly because over time they will just be used up and more importantly because human civilization keeps growing. There has to be an alternative. And I certainly don't think that nuclear power is an option, either.

The only real problem I have is that the documentary partly tries to justify capitalism and globalization, disguising it as innocent human progress. I don't buy that. I don't believe it's a good or justifiable thing. It's pretty ironic that many people are concerned about people living in third world countries because they will die through in-door smoke because they have no electricity.

I don't feel like watching over an hours worth of what seems like denier ho hum. It is quite obvious that adding the 100 or so CUBIC miles of oil and coal will add significantly to the CO2 count (as also observed). It is also obvious that that is still just about 1/10,000th extra added to the air, thus why it is easy to understand why "nobody" believes in GW.

So b4 you say it ain't true, please tell me how CO2 IS NOT opaque to infrared (or if that amount is indeed too trivial).

There's two things to keep apart in this debate. The effect of CO2, be what it may, is one... the pollution/destruction of the environment by all the other crap released a complete different story. Just look at natural gas. The burning of the gas might be a 'clean' fuel, but the extraction by fracking is not. Nothing is worth the poisoning and destruction of the very world we live in and are dependent on for our survival.

Anything short of dismantling the entire system is unacceptable. It will not work to reverse the damages we've already done. Most of it is hidden from the world. Dumping toxic wastes into areas no one habitates. Digging through the earth to get at the oil. Fracturing the earth to get at the natural gas.

@Kostly Since humans have been on this planet over the last some 30, 000 years it has only been since the boom of the Industrial Revolution that we finally looked at our impact on the Earth. The Industrial revolution was the hieght of anthroprogenic CO2 emmissions and was still cooler. Co2 doesnt cause global warming...Warm temperatures cause increases in Co2...Think about boiling water...the Oceans are saturated with Co2...we are in the shadow of our last glaciation and the Earth simply warms.

@sago334 There are things worse than greenhouse gases on the earth. I don't think that should be defended in the face of anthropogenic global warming. I think the point they are trying to make is that global warming is a marketing strategy. I don't think it's bad to consider there is such a thing as nature that it's necessary to preserve. I don't think that humans should die for the sake of alternative energies, but this doesn't mean it's ok to destroy our planet.

The global temperature obviously changes over time, and earth has gone through periods with a high CO2 level, but we would definately not benefit from that, and a rise in CO2 level of 15% in 100 years is a pretty radical change. Do you really believe it has no consequences whatsoever?

C02 levels in greenhouses are often times three times as concentrated as natural air. Short answer, no I don't believe there are any consequences to a 15% increase in c02, unless of course you consider plants and crops developing larger bio-mass and yielding more crop a "consequence".

More c02 = more plants grow larger

More plants grow larger = people worldwide can feed feed themselves easier

You thinking that's a bad thing = Proof that enviro-nuts like yourself are a hindrance to humanity.

@JovialEel That's really not a good argument dude, Plants can only absorb so much C02, it's like saying that if 1 vitamin tablet a day is good for me, then 100 a day must be 100 times as good. You could argue that they could grow in greater numbers, but they pretty much do everywhere they can. If a plant can grow in a location, then it will, but what with deforestation, industrialisation and intensive farming there are fewer and fewer places for them. It always comes back to us again.

Farming involves planting in nice neat rows with even spaces between the plants for easy access, it involves removing weeds, and with modern equipment you can get multiple harvests a year so they aren't even there for that long. Yeah, it's dense vegetation compared to an urban area but it's not exactly a forest is it.

@Beelzeboogie Certainly not dense compared to you but they are plants. Most CO2 is stored in the oceans and the tundra. When the air warms due to solar cycles (as it has since the beginning our our planet) it is released. Similar to leaving a cold coke sitting out. As it warms, it looses more CO2.

CO2 levels follow temp rises rather than preclude them. It is not a factor in climate change.

The biggest factor in CC is the solar wind and cosmic rays causing more/less clouds. Look it up.

The interesting thing is, they don't deny that the earth is warming, they just claim that its part of a "cycle".

The problem is that during some of these "cycles", the temperatures have been too high or low for mankind to exist, and last longer than humankind have walked the earth.

Hence, what they are saying is that the problem is actually worse than Al Gore makes it out to be.

However, I agree there is too much focus on CO2. Pavement and Particulate matter are big factors.
