Saw a really hot picture of her in the blues & soul mag once which made me fall in love. The pang only gets worse when you hear that beautiful music. Now I'll never be free of her grasp on my heart... mmm ah well, may aswell get used to it
This is the first time I heard this song, and I find myself playing it 3x in a row !!!! lol i stopped what i was working on just to find everything she has made. Swag, pimp juice, bangin', fire the joint, smokin', etc.Makes me just want to Download it, drop all the windows in my car, turn the system sky-high, and ride till i run out of gas just to help somebody else catch this groove.
Remembering classic gems from Charlie & Inez Foxx, solo "Let Me Down Easy" from Inez is stunning & going to seek this set out...the lady can get inside a song with so much feeling...Bravo Inez!
Muchbetter is a slight over statement but I see why you said that though. Betty L was singing that from the heart and soul you felt it but Inez change the beat up slowed it down some which gave me a different appreciation for the song. None the less great suggestion and I'm looking for more so hit me.
damn i wish i was around in the 70's, would of picked up my black queen wit an large afro n cruised in my continental all night to this..... WOW love it
who cares who sampled it? this is the real deal! when musicians cared and worked hard at being the best. when musicians knew feeling was the most important thing.
Finally copped this the other day! Amazing deep cut! There's also a great outro on this LP of her being interviewed by someone... the backing instrumental is amazing!
@optikCB yes! That outro track 'mousa muse' struck me too when I first picked up this record...I like the volume pedal effects on the guitar...but my favorite part is when that string part really comes in toward the end of the track.
@BeyondBodyAndSoul Absolutely! Ms Foxx's interview segment was really insightful and a nice unique touch to close the album, but I almost wish that the backing instrumental was louder or a clean instrumental just by itself, very heartfelt stuff!
@chris240275 Actually I prefer by far Betty's singing, I finf it more emotional and sincere (not to mention the gloomy arrangements), but enjoy this version too, it's like half-way between Betty and Lyn Collins!
Thing about sampling is: You gotta feel the SOUL, in the voices and everything, before you can sample, or else you'll never have anything good. If you dont LOVE or appreciate the soul music, you'll never be able to produce a soul sampled hiphop beat.
This beat used in a Nina Sky track named "Your Time" - great track by the way...ive always wanted to hear the original .....spent a lot of time online looking for it..thanks for posting this classic..
Message to "the youth" - If you STOPPED "sampling" truly great songs like this and started actually LISTENING to them, you might learn to do something original and genuinely creative for a change, rather than spending endless hours ripping up old songs into soundbites and completely ruining them!
"Find the original record and sample it"?? No. Find the record and listen to it, appreciate it and LEAVE IT THE HELL ALONE!
Not quite. There are hip hop producers that actually produce original music. Besides, the "youth" that you're referring to don't give a rat's ass about ANY of this stuff. Mostly 30+ Hip Hop Heads know something about taking classics like this and turning them into Hip Hop tracks. So, with that in mind, a lot of them are getting from their folks' record collection. :-)
I was born in '73. My mama got this album in her stash. I grew up listening to joints like this, especially since I grew up and still reside in the South. With that being said, producers like 9th, RZA and such are all in their mid to late 30s, heading into their 40s. It's quite possible that they dug this up from their folks' collections as well. They consider themselves paying tribute to the great music that came before them, not trying to kill it.
Then read boricuamobsta's comment below. Whatever his "good intentions" boon dock DID "kill it", (quite literally) in comparison to Betty Lavette and Inez Foxx, and made quite a bit of personal profit in the process no doubt. I actually met Inez Foxx in 1974, just after she'd signed to Stax and saw her perform live. She was the real deal. No "sampling", no pre-recorded backing tracks, no remixing her vocals, no miming. I'll stick with Inez and Betty Lavette, thanks all the same.
Um, 'killed it' these days can mean that he did a good job with the track. Just wanted you to know that. Now, whether that's the way the other commenter meant it, I'm not sure.
there are different ways to play instruments such as a keyboard instead of sampling.. most of those producers play some stupid melody with some awful fruity loops plugin and use downloaded drumkits, throw in an 808 kick and a so-called handclap that sounds like plastic and call themselves producers. to such people i as well would say "go dig in the crates and learn something about music first." on the other hand, producers like timbaland or neptunes don't necessarily sample but make good stuff.
@phezla sorry but tim samples too. on a majority of Aaliyah's songs he used middle eastern sample but he played instruments over the samples. sampling is okay as long as you make it sound real like you orchestrated or composed it. I do feel you on the corny plastic hanclaps, 808 and stupid synth arrangements
When I first heard "Your Time" by Nina Sky before I started making beats I was like "man the producer to that song is mad creative! I wonder how he came up with that melody." Come to find out its just a loop from this song...
i also sampled this beat...give a fuck if 9th used it....dont get me wrong...9th is pretty much my HERO, but it doesnt mean an artist cant use samples others uses
While I agree that no one can sing this like Betty LaVette, I think that this Isaac Hayes inspired arrangement blows Betty's out the water. Nobody can beat Betty LaVette's original of this absolute Soul classic, but Inez Foxx (whom I adore!) runs it a very close second I think. Nice 70s string arrangement too. Very Isaac Hayes. Great choice.

While I agree that no one can sing this like Betty LaVette, I think that this Isaac Hayes inspired arrangement blows Betty's out the water. The slower, more sinister tempo and dramatic horn & string charts build a dramatic tension that fits great with the lyrics of this song. In a perfect world Betty LaVette would've had the chance to re-recorded the song in this style back in the early 70's.
