~~~^^~^In 2006 REPUBLICAN legislators mandated that the U.S. Postal Service(USPS) begin a 10 yr process of pre-paying all health & retirement benefits for all employees it may hire up to 75 yrs from now! THE GOAL: To create the ILLUSION that USPS, a NON tax payer funded profit making agency, is on the verge of FINANCIAL COLLAPSE! REPUBLICANS want to BREAK THE POSTAL UNION, lay off 125,000 AMERICANS & PRIVATIZE USPS . ~~~^^REPUBLICAN RACKETEERING & GREED ARE DESTROYING AMERICA! !!!!!!
No I miss read your reply, we were agreeing. Tax breaks and Corporate welfare just leads to companies moving out of the U.S. Its done under the guise of saving jobs but the money the corporation save is used to move out of the country.
National socialist workers party. The unions are all about being a NAZI's . Members are as the jews that bought tickets onelocation trains (death camp express) A new group of kool-air drinking stupid assholes. Fuck all union members with a thorny stick dipped in alcohol
@deepfriedchocobo You sure can as soon as pigs fly out of a frozen over hell to pot of gold at end of rainbow next to the unicorn. I love unions. No I can't think of anything funny. They suck and the members take it in the ash
@Arkinight There is a path toward that, but not if we don't put in the effort to manage ourselves and the work process. I think it's in human capacities, once technology develops to a great enough extent.
why didn't he walk with the unions in Wisconsin? The Democratic Party didn't give one DIME to the movement in Wisconsin. People are easily duped by a handsome good orator. GET him out.
The Administration has clipped the wings of the Unions. Now it pits them against non-union shops, and as long as the Unions are powerless to strike until 2015, the administration is in power. The sad part is that the union members are used...or played against themselves, while their benefits are wiped out. They are used to achieve a goal, but not their own goals, for they are powerless until 2015. The admin is out on a limb, if the unions see the truth about their co-option, Admin becomes null.
only a conservative could look at GWB's 8 years leaving this country in the worst condition we have probably ever seen in the history of the united states before Obama spent 1 day in office and spend the next 4 years complaining about him not cleaning it up with his magic wand fast enough before ever once talking about any responsibility for the last administration. Obama has proven the only thing worse than a Demorat is a Repuklican.
OK - why they hell can't they strike - will the national guard be called in - will they be forced by gun point - what - damn it - the unions fought with the politicians, the police and the national guard yrs ago - we are freaking pretending we can't do what we can do.
@Shisho2k And they do have the right to strike and organize. The bankers don't have the right to sell fraudulent derivatives to pension fund managers, that is the only problem the world has, bankers and their derivatives trading.
@deceiver123m Well what I was saying is that rights are asserted, and not given by the corporate over lords and politicians. If people start believing they need something in writing to have the right to organize and fight for what is owed to them, then it's a fairly bad situation. You don't need a right or a piece of paper for permission to strike. The people who have traditionally done it did it in face of authority and law. Even against the force of violence.
Sub-prime auto loans have also increased by about 40% each year for the past 2 years which means that some interest rate resets are likely going to destroy this market as well.
IMPEACH HIM!!!! I voted for that lier cheater charlatan I could not make it past 2:51 my self . I voted for Ron Paul in the 08 Primary's, and Obama when Paul didnt get the nomination. I was a CHUMP!!! I wont be fooled again the hair sprayed Globalist running against Ron Paul this time. I Vote for Ron Paul or no one. IF he does not get elected IM getting ready for the revolution that will come when the United States of the UN Collapse. AFT shpping guns DEA , CIA shipping drugs WTF
@Kicker001911 Just don't vote period. Assuming that there is no election rigging (and it is very likely that there is) Ron Paul will be politically hog tied, scandalized and then murdered if he gets into office. The Richest of the Rich and most Powerful of the Powerful have no time for the plebs and their ideas. Either that or Ronny is just another corporate shill and he's being marketed as the principled people's man. Voting hasn't made a difference in decades it's time to stop.
@rctube1958 my bet is that if 100% of the nation were to vote for him... the corporate media and the voting machine companies would make it look like he lost by a narrow margine to the corporatist candidate (nearly all the rest). Failing that he will be scandalized, marginalized, or executed (perhaps in a plane accident or a 'heart attack'). Don't vote: there is no hope.
@elbowbiter1 You might be right. America has a history of "lone" gunmen who take out any populist leaders who go "off script." However, given the chance, I will vote for him... twice.
@rctube1958 Well if that what it takes to prove to yourself that the American Democratic Republic is dead and has been for quite some time, then I salute you.
I just wish people realized they were in the same angered furvor neocons were back 5 years ago for muslims. But now against "rich people".
When during both times they rage, yet ignore the actual (named) handful of muslims that did cause the crime, or now the named handful of rich people that did.
Honestly it's going to be the Chinese in another 5 years. You guys have get over your generalized anger and start focusing on original instigators.
@sirellyn Also, its a fact that when companies get more tax breaks, THAT is when they start outsourcing. It isn't cheap to shut down a factory in Wisconsin and set another one up in Xianching, but a tax break makes that possible.
@spartan2600 There are tax breaks for moving your company offshore? I wasn't aware of that. And if it's cheaper to stay in the US (including taxes, buying security for theft, finding enough skilled workers that make what the customers want etc) why would they not stay?
@spartan2600 so does Billions of tax payer dollars given to them to move there company out of the country. No EPA , no workman's comp, no retirement; no tariffs, why stay in America if your only goal is to make as much money as possible with the least amount of liability. We can go back to the 1930 were people worked 80 hours a week and if you got killed on the job there was another guy waiting and they just buried the waste in the ground or pumped it into a lake or river.
@sirellyn Thank you for saying this. It's amazing that this demonization of anyone who's rich has gone this far, as though all rich people are thieves. Although I shouldn't be surprised, this hating the rich provides the moral justification for taking other people's money to spend on oneself.
people dont understand the concept of unions in this country. if the unions go so will the middle class. I think what workers should do is to take over plants that were closed, get them running again, and work for themselves not for those selfish CEO buracrats. American workers should be treated better then that. I would like to see how all these CEO will make money if they have no workers. these CEO and other buracrats are USELESS. workers can do everything themselves. POWER TOTHE WORKERS
Critical point so pls take note: In GM's reorganization the Bankruptcy court allowed something called CARRY FORWARD TAX LOSS PROVISIONS which allow a corporation to claim as an asset past year's loss' which have either of one or two effect's; it's shield's earning's from the taxation they would otherwise have to bear or it provides a tax rebate thereby artificially floating the company on the taxpayers dime. Normally past year's loss' are eliminated in bankruptcy proceedings. Not this time.
Send this marxist muslim moonbat back to kenya --along with his ganster buddy Hoffa jr--who needs to be buried by his crooked daddy!---Take that bastard Jo Biden with ya as well!
@MrWaspman2006 original comeback, still doesn't change the fact that you a dirty kuffar. remember incest is a crime against humanity...dirty kuffar. KUFFAR=COWARD, vert simple...
Times are hard so we must accept to do sacrifices! I am forty now and I never heard another message from the politicians. This is bullshit! Let's ask sacrifices from the corporations making billions instead.
No way China can compete with the USA if they have to pay minimum wage like the USA, just wait until China averages $47,000 per capita then the USA will be able to compete for cheap labour for sure.
More and more work for lower and lower wages. You just keep paying your dues Sonny (that’s the senior workers throwing their children under the bus). Of course Wall Street bonuses are in the tens of millions.
@sirellyn If anybody is pro-slavery - IT'S YOU! Both Corporate Democrats and majority of Republicans are Neo-Liberals! And reading your comment it is very apparent that you're pro Neo-Liberal too. They are all for moving wealth to the upper 7% while raping & pillaging the middle-class to the point where America is reduced down to 3rd world status.
You better understand that politicians, the media, & so-called social leaders march in foot step to demonize Unions who stand for the middle-class.
@yo1dude1man I'm for NOT forcing people to work for wages or prices they are not satisfied with. I take the same stance on workers and management.
You are stuck in generalizing/racist land; "They are all for.." really? Every single one huh? While you rage at a huge swath of people, those individuals who did/continue to cause these issues are ignored. Your anger is as undirected as the "war on terror", and will be be just as effective escalating that which it's supposed to be against.
@yo1dude1man Unions dont stand for the middle class. I am so tired of hearing that bullshit. Unions have been bankrupting private companies for decades and now are bankrupting all of us with the Public Unions. Unions at one time helped the working man now they just help themselves to more power. Trumka doesnt care about u he only cares about power. Do all union members go to the same brainwashing class or what. Unions once helped now the hurt workers and America.
@tkcrofamericans If you really believe that then you're a Neo-Liberal HACK!!!!!!
You can trace the decline of Unions inline with the decline of our economy & buying power of the American Dollar. 1st they started their black balling of Unions from Political & Social Leaders, plus corporate owned Main Stream Media in the early 60's followed up Nixon unpegging the Dollar from the Bretton Woods system in '71. Inflation increased 500%! Minimum wage should be at $25 an hour, what Union members make.
@yo1dude1man You are completely out of your mind. If everyone made that much everything would cost alot more. Your cars cost more because of the benefits that they gave to union members that they cant afford. Why would i pay someone 25 an hour to make my fries. Your are out of your mind. Get out of Trumka's ass and think for yourself.
@tkcrofamericans Will what is COMPLETELY out of your mind is that FACT that from 1972 to present we've had 500% increase in inflation. And you're well out of your mind to think that minimum wage should not rise with it. So you are for rich getting richer and poor getting poorer. You're not part of the solution! You're part of the Problem!
@yo1dude1man When you raise the minimum wage you are paying the kids starting out more money no the people that who have been working. If you have been working and you are not making more money then you are either a bad worker or work for a bad company. So either become a better worker or get a new job. If you are un-educated then learn a trade or get more education. You believe everyone should make the same amount and that is not the way it works.
@yo1dude1man Unions are part of the problem because they believe everyone should get more money no matter what they do or how well they do it. Quit crying work harder and if your efforts dont get you a raise at your current job find a new one. Just because you want more money doesnt mean you deserve it!!!!!! Move up the ladder become a valuable employee so they promote you so you earn more money. It is pursuit of Happiness not a guarantee of Happiness. Not paying the fryguy 25 an hour!!!!
@yo1dude1man Unions are not helping this country anymore they are killing it. Hoffa is turning in his grave listening to all the whiners in his Union out there along with his loser son. He worked for real working people not the cry babies of today. Unions = Power not Prosperity!!!!!! They dont care about you only there pocket books and power.
union workers should be making nothing less than $120/hour plus benefits and retirement as they get back and hand problems and can only work so long before their body is shot. All people including people at coffee houses should be unionized and make the same wage regardless of skill but based only upon seniority. I'm at a non union restaurant and should be making the same as any auto worker because i'm on my feet all day and dealing with stress just as they put in bolts and weld.
@rayallin I'd prefer if the wages and benefits of management was tied to that of the workers, so management only makes 2x the amount the workers make - that way you provide an incentive for giving the workers a bigger piece of the pie that they themselves have baked; after all, CEO's and boards of directors don't create any value, the workers do, and so I'd want to see worker self-management and cooperatives being encouraged, and unions being put on the board in remaining private companies.
@atosafi 2x, why should a manager make any more than the rest of us. Whats fair is we all make the exact same wage regardless of the job or skill and we all work the same 8 hours per day with 2 humain hours off for lunch and rest and bathroom breaks. Pay scale and vacation leave should be on seniority so we all work under the same rules completely fair including shop stewards and the the private firms should be forced to have 50% union management and share 50% in the profits to all workers.
@rayallin Agreed, what I proposed(i.e management wages and benefits tied to workers, unions on boards of directors, laws and regulations that make it harder to hire and fire anyone for whatever reason etc.) is a beginning, a step in the right direction. We need to encourage and help worker- and consumer cooperatives, publicly-owned companies, worker self-management etc so as to phase out the hierarchy in private corporations and create a truly fair and equal society.
@rctube1958 This topic has been discussed ad nauseam, and I won't bother with it because it doesn't look like you will bother changing your mind, but let me just ask you this question:
How on earth did you come to the conclusion that China is a communist country? Because it's ruled by a Communist Party?
Just because the powers that be call themselves that it doesn't mean it's true, just look at how America calls itself a democracy when it's really a plutocracy.
@atosafi1 To say management only gets paid 2x workers you have to find management that wants to work for that much. If you don't, you literally have to force them to work for that much. When you are forcing people to do work against their will it's slavery. Even if you are paying them.
So, why wouldn't you just have a number of the disgruntled union people break off, form their own company and pay workers 1x and management 2x?
@sirellyn Because they are at a disadvantage against the wealthy owners? I don't get the logic you people so often use, when you say e.g "You cannot raise taxes or companies will outsorce"; that is why we need regional and global agreements.
What we need is
1. Fair Trade, not Free Trade
2. An international minimum level with regards to wages, conditions, influence and safety
3. Harmonization of tax rates and outlawing of tax havens.
@atosafi1 So break that down. Why are you at a disadvantage against the wealthy owners?
You never delve too deep into this question.
If you wanted to have the power to make boss decisions for yourself, isn't it important to understand how to be (good) bosses? Someone else should be the responsible boss, yet no one else ever is. In all the billions of people no labor leader or boss has tried to do this and been successful.
@atosafi1 To not make this too long I'll pick on point 3 for now. I just wonder where your priorities are... Saying it's better to give more money to the government, than it is to ask them to sacrifice even a fraction of half their budget that is going to unpopular wars and killing people abroad?
I mean you'd ask for more money before you'd ask them to stop? If you give them more money you'll absolutely get more war, and might get more social funding. (given recent history)
@atosafi1 Instead of lobbying the government to force everyone else into trying your (cool) idea, you should start a business and do it yourself! What a good model you would be for others, and conservatives couldn't criticize you guys (without being called crazy) because you created your horizontally-managed business voluntarily. This is what I want to see out of the left! Be creative! Develop alternatives yourselves rather than trying to impose your vision onto everyone.
@vNorilor I don't have the money to start a business, I'm a construction worker on sick-leave at the moment. You've probably also missed the fact that all markets today are dominated by 3-4 immensely powerful corporations that cooperate to keep prices high and wages low. Any new company that becomes a threat to their rule is instantly destroyed through undercutting and unfair competition or is bought
That's why this free-market fundamentalism doesn't work, it inevitably morphs into Corporatism.
@atosafi1 Yes, you should pool resources with like-minded compatriots. Your ideological narrative about who and how many dominate "all markets" (a hilarious claim) isn't an argument. Then you appeal to the classic undercutting and "unfair" competition (of course, YOU get to decide what is and isn't fair. lol) fallacies to make a massive, blanket claim about free markets not working. Do you know what corporatism IS? Hint: It requires YOUR policies. State intervention = regulatory capture.
@vNorilor I don't see the logic of your argument, it's like telling someone who criticizes Obama to try running for president himself - you couldn't miss the point harder if you tried
I'm not seeing any counter-arguments on your part, it's just aggressive damning of my views and verbal diarrhea
The neoliberal free market is a paradox, if the State does not intervene in order to regulate & control the economy, other shady organisations, such as multi-national predators, trusts and so on, will.
@atosafi1 It morphs because of greed and the politicians go after the money instead of standing on principle. There own regulations that are out of control are causing the problems that we see today and are actually creating monopolies within the business communities. Which is why they keep saying too big to fail because they have propped these companies up so much that they cant allow them to go down or all the pension funds for the unions would go down also.
What this country needs is a real socialist liberal president, too bad we still do not have one, just another corporate puppet Obama, Bush, what is the difference?
Ok Barry. Mr. Soetoro is not even a good liar. Did you know that MOST of the new auto worker jobs are in . . . . CHINA! Yes China! The big three are opening more new factories, dealerships and repair shops in China than the U.S. Those so called jobs in Detroit are for Chinese workers. CHINA is where the profits are and Mr. Soetoro intends to do NOTHING about it. The big three love China - not the United States....
Barack might as well just change his "D" to an "R" and be honest with himself and the people! Maybe you can pass yourself off as a moderate Republican?
All these concessions to create tiers of different pay and benefits and agree to NOT STRIKE FOR YEARS is designed to thwart our exploiters' fears of our move to solidarity. Even 'ol socialist (lol) Obama is supporting this break-up of the base of union support and getting the union-member-back-drop nodding their heads up and down like the fools they are about how necessary it is to break their only power against our corporate masters and how the public unions better decide to self-destruct also.
Now you know why the Libertarians want to take away the feed bag. They get paid while everyone else get hurt. At least you can be sure of your own actions. Big government is the an agent of evil! Who was it that signed NAFTA?
Obama is owned by corporations. Wall Street firms especially funded his campaign very heavily. Obama works for these corporations instead of working for the American people. For Obama to get up there on the podium and act like he is a friend of the common laborer is an insult to workers everywhere in the U.S. Obama is no friend of the working man. In fact, the labor movement hasn't had a Democrat in the White House that will fight for them in many years. They've all been corporatists.
@mrx0066600 You're a little more optimistic than I am. The third party Candidate, if elected, will be politically marginalized by both legal and illegal means. He/She will be lambasted by the media. Sabataged by industry. And if all that fails... he/she will have a 'heart attack' or an 'accident' or just be plain gunned down in the streets. Don't Vote: There is no hope.
@mrx0066600 dude that's the whole trite and annoyingly incorrigible, tho true, nadar argument...everyone in washington do and will take money from big corps to subsist there-via them funding reelection campaigns etc....what is important ARE those differences between an obama and say a romney, those differences DO matter to people....we know we know, there's no enough parties, and the two big ones are "the same" blah blah blah...its about choosing the lesser of two evils really, that simple
And we should over throw this sorry excuse of an election system that only provides shit and shit with fabric softener.
I'm talking about a system that only runs on the people's money, making it illegal to donate money to politicians by any means other then through this system which would make sure that everyone had a fair showing. We have the internet, why are we doing things in this outdated fashion?
Where the ones who win are those that get bought the most.
@mrx0066600 agreed! but i think we're way too spoiled 2consider go protesting in the streets for anything.Unfortunately the only ones who cld really affect that are the legislators we electwho R being lobbied by countless boogie men:finance,defense,corporations etc.Were a long road away from the discontent that would jerk us americans from our comfortable stupor to get us 2go demand change that grand,what really matters right now are fighting for those differences,however meek u might view them
The reality is we aren't all in this together. With attacks on unions and the ideology of competitive markets in play, workers are reduced to just being participants, when it would actually be impossible to have trade without real commodities (including services) being produced. Management is necessary in a market system, but that system inevitably perverts itself.
@mikem1234 That's right, Mike - non-interference in a spontaneous order is ideological, but interfering in said order by imposing moralistic visions (leftism) isn't. Unreal narcissism on your part.
@vNorilor I'm having trouble understanding your argument. Are you saying that the market system works in the best interests of most of the population, and that this belief (which is actually held by a lot of people) is actually true? Those who disagree lack a venue to voice their distaste because the power of money has has eliminated political dissent. What is spontaneous about an order (the market) that is constantly being forced on people as the only way to live life?
@mikem1234 The market system (whether mixed or pure) makes the largest number the most wealthy, yes. Another, neglected, virtue is that private property solves political moral conundrums as well. People on the left are free to create businesses with non-hierarchical decision-making patterns - They're free to pool resources and collectivize ownership via, not despite, contract and property. Property and contract form the necessary framework for liberal civilization. What you build is up to you.
@vNorilor By a market system, I mean individual private property and the commodification of all the Earth's resources, which does take political and social engineering to achieve. I just wanted to point out that conditions for the market's functioning are being engineered every day by the state, at the request of big capital owners like the Koch brothers. I'm not against "property," I'm against the ideology that it can only be used for individual greed.
@mikem1234 I'm happy that you're being friendly, but I've got to tell you rolling out the Koch Boogeymen hurts your cause. The state overrides and perverts the functioning of markets constantly. If your point is simply that liberal democracies mostly uphold property rights, cool. "...the ideology that it can only be used for individual greed". Libertarians don't defend property on those grounds - I don't think anyone does. Property, being a framework, is essentially whatever you build upon it.
@mikem1234 I disagree with your characterization of the anti-capitalist's situation. They have more than one venue. Academics in the humanities and social sciences are on the left in a strong majority. The average economist, even, is a moderate democrat. The claim that money has eliminated dissent seems like an emotional exaggeration to me. And finally, individualist property arrangements involve the least force, and the most opportunity for creative institutions! Socialistic ones included!
@mikem1234 If we apply a basic formulation of the presumption of liberty, what people do on their own - the solutions and institutions they choose and the ways in which they evolve, so long as they are not violating the autonomy of others, serves as a baseline. That baseline is the liberal property and contract framework. What I meant was that leaving people to their business is not ideological, but IMPOSING a moralistic vision, which is precisely what political leftism is, IS ideological.
I had to stop this video at 2:51 because I can't stand to listen to another word of this two-faced lying snake in the grass pretend he is on the side of the working class and the unions after he had NOTHING whatsoever to say in support of the unions when it fucking mattered in Wisconsin.
barry obama. The republican's best secret ally... ever.
@annoloki yeah that's where I stopped it. I couldn't take anymore of listening to barry and didn't know when Paul Jay's critique would begin. So 2:55 eh? thanks I'll just skip to that now.
@HulkSmashPunyHumans So you turned off Obama's Orwellian speech and missed the entire discussion of what to do about the betrayal of workers. That's smart.
@HulkSmashPunyHumans I obviously missed the other replies to your comment. Sorry. BTW, The Real News is excellent with spotting and discussing political BS & even treachery. And Paul J was visibly seething. Too bad identifying and discussing this problem has yet to find a solution that we can go with, 'cause right now it looks like we'll only get him again or somebody even worse, (if you remember Bush!) Obama throws a chewed up old bone to the left once a year or so and the Dems just lap it up.
FYI, the so called jobs that are missing have been shipped overseas thanks thanks to Globalization. The only jobs that Governments can create are more Government jobs, which the taxpayers ultimately will have to pay for. This so called illegal puppet President is just that and nothing more. Keynsians are in control and are running rampant!
Since when did Mexicans and Chinese become the greatest American Auto Workers in the world? The Day this SOB took over GMC and sent Ford Motors to Mexico! What a scum bag this devil's messiah is! Where is Boeing? Where is Caterpillar? Where is Whirlpool? Where is Hersey? Where is Ron Paul?
@Zalahblue Ron aul can't create jobs because he doesn't believe in tax increses on the rich. Same as the rest of the republicans. Cut spending and cut taxes. That is BS.
@captcrais101 Please explain to me how you take money from one person to pay another persons wage and create a net gain in money? (Minus the costs of processing and transferring the money)
@sirellyn When wealthy people ensnare more and more of their money into their fat bank accounts, less of it is circulated in the productive economy, and more of it is sent into market speculation, property values (their mansions), to private jets and sports cars, and abroad where they vacation. When union workers get more of that money, they spend it at home and immediately. They spend more of it on food, clothing, education, and health, all of which have much higher multiplier effect.
@spartan2600 Banks loan out deposited money. The more the better. Also, it's workers, union and not, who build the mansions, private jets and sports cars that the wealthy spend their money on. The jobs created by producing for the wealthy are good paying, skilled middle class jobs. So the money of the wealthy DOES end up in the economy, often in very productive ways.
@rctube1958 Yes but who"s economy??? Free trade is good for the wealthy who spend there money and own the manufacturing plants, but bad for the American worker who has no job to earn money, t cause its all made over seas. Look in the store the next time you go. See how many things you find made in America especially things people need every day. And if you say it to expensive to make in America the your whole paragraph need to be re- written
@Kicker001911 If you don't think being able to buy goods for 1/10th the price they would cost to make in the USA is a good thing, you don't have to buy those things. I think most people prefer cheaper goods.
If you live in a developed country like the USA but your skills are only developed to the same level as a Chinese peasant with which you compete, you need to develop some skills that justify the higher salary you want.
@Kicker001911 Your question is an important one. Why has the basic consumer industry left America? Cost is one important factor, but the question remains "Why can't we produce the things found in the corner store? Especially since we did for decades." I believe it's because of the many financial, environmental and other regulations placed on business along with a tax code that encourages businesses to move off-shore.
@Kicker001911 BTW, everyone benefits from free trade. The scam is in the many trade treaties entered into where America has traded away its competitive advantage. Check out Ross Perot from the early 90's.
@rctube1958 the loud sucking sound we would hear... thats the sound of jobs leaving America. Ross Perot was right. Your preaching to the chore. But it no free trade or free markets that America deals in. It Globalist agenda, corporate manipulation of the government and take over of the Government by infiltration of every agency by the industries they are supposed to police. Our Government has been hijacked. And is run by a group of criminals.
@Kicker001911 Don't leave out the part about representatives being bought up by the handfuls and doing the bidding of Capital instead of The People just to buy brain-washing comercials to get elected/re-elected. That's where Obama is right now, and has probably been since forever.
Money corrodes the soul and too much money in too few hands corrodes society.
@rctube1958 You've done nothing but proven that the rich are *entirely* economic vampires. Indeed, some scraps do fall off the kings table and get eaten up by paupers. However, you're ignoring the fact that *trillions* of dollars are leeched out of the *productive* economy by the rich and locked up in property, like $20 million plots of land in La Jolla California or $30 million plots of land in the Hamptons.
@rctube1958 Also, why are we wasting hundreds of billions on private jets when 1 out of 8 children are malnourished? Instead of paying workers to build yachts, which is as wasteful as paying them to dig and then fill the same hole, we should pay them to build shelter for the homeless, provide food for the hungry, create jobs for the jobless, etc. So no, the trillions wasted on producing lavish and extravagant lifestyles for American aristocrats are almost entirely wasteful.
@spartan2600 You explained WHY you should spend tax money on say a union worker, but not HOW it creates a net gain in money.
How is a certain amount of wealth able to produce more than what it originally was? Forget imaginary stock market gains, think real life. Theres 10,000 in the local town. I give you 20 dollars, how do you make the town net 10,050 dollars or more?
@eliseville You are talking about a transfer 50k x for $1. I'm asking how you make more using that one. (without funny numbers like fractional reserve banking).
Say you have one hammer in an entire community. Yes you could pass it around 50k times, but how do you use that hammer to help make another?
@sirellyn But we're talking money, not hammers. Money can be used to buy many goods and services. If you pay someone, they can make you a functional hammer from raw materials, if that's what you want to buy, but it needs to be made here by people working here. Maybe instead, you'd rather get your car washed or have someone teach you Spanish or sing you a lullaby. Once that dollar gets flowing here in our community, anything can happen.
But flow is lost if it is spent outside of that community.
@eliseville I was talking of wealth and prosperity actually, because as you said, money is simply an accepted medium of exchange. So given an amount of wealth, how do you get more? In a community it's easier to see the exchange but the same model works over large scale. You said it yourself though. Someone uses the hammer to build another. Now overall there are twice as many hammers. (more wealth).
The Administration has clipped the wings of the Unions. Now it pits them against non-union shops, and as long as the Unions are powerless to strike until 2015, the administration is in power. The sad part is that the union members are used...or played against themselves, while their benefits are wiped out. They are used to achieve a goal, but not their own goals, for they are powerless until 2015. The admin is out on a limb, if the unions see the truth about their co-option, Admin becomes null.
@Shisho2k And they do have the right to strike and organize. The bankers don't have the right to sell fraudulent derivatives to pension fund managers, that is the only problem the world has, bankers and their derivatives trading.
deceiver123m 5 months ago
@deceiver123m Well what I was saying is that rights are asserted, and not given by the corporate over lords and politicians. If people start believing they need something in writing to have the right to organize and fight for what is owed to them, then it's a fairly bad situation. You don't need a right or a piece of paper for permission to strike. The people who have traditionally done it did it in face of authority and law. Even against the force of violence.
sirellyn 6 months ago
@sirellyn Also, its a fact that when companies get more tax breaks, THAT is when they start outsourcing. It isn't cheap to shut down a factory in Wisconsin and set another one up in Xianching, but a tax break makes that possible.
spartan2600 6 months ago
@spartan2600 There are tax breaks for moving your company offshore? I wasn't aware of that. And if it's cheaper to stay in the US (including taxes, buying security for theft, finding enough skilled workers that make what the customers want etc) why would they not stay?
sirellyn 6 months ago
@spartan2600 so does Billions of tax payer dollars given to them to move there company out of the country. No EPA , no workman's comp, no retirement; no tariffs, why stay in America if your only goal is to make as much money as possible with the least amount of liability. We can go back to the 1930 were people worked 80 hours a week and if you got killed on the job there was another guy waiting and they just buried the waste in the ground or pumped it into a lake or river.
Critical point so pls take note: In GM's reorganization the Bankruptcy court allowed something called CARRY FORWARD TAX LOSS PROVISIONS which allow a corporation to claim as an asset past year's loss' which have either of one or two effect's; it's shield's earning's from the taxation they would otherwise have to bear or it provides a tax rebate thereby artificially floating the company on the taxpayers dime. Normally past year's loss' are eliminated in bankruptcy proceedings. Not this time.
If they are THAT profitable, why wouldn't someone who wants to share the wealth do that?
You undermine the whole point of a union against tyranny, when you make a union OF tyranny.
@tkcrofamericans If you really believe that then you're a Neo-Liberal HACK!!!!!!
You can trace the decline of Unions inline with the decline of our economy & buying power of the American Dollar. 1st they started their black balling of Unions from Political & Social Leaders, plus corporate owned Main Stream Media in the early 60's followed up Nixon unpegging the Dollar from the Bretton Woods system in '71. Inflation increased 500%! Minimum wage should be at $25 an hour, what Union members make.
yo1dude1man 5 months ago
@yo1dude1man You are completely out of your mind. If everyone made that much everything would cost alot more. Your cars cost more because of the benefits that they gave to union members that they cant afford. Why would i pay someone 25 an hour to make my fries. Your are out of your mind. Get out of Trumka's ass and think for yourself.
tkcrofamericans 5 months ago
@tkcrofamericans Will what is COMPLETELY out of your mind is that FACT that from 1972 to present we've had 500% increase in inflation. You're part of the Problem!
yo1dude1man 5 months ago
@yo1dude1man When you raise the minimum wage you are paying the kids starting out more money no the people that who have been working. If you have been working and you are not making more money then you are either a bad worker or work for a bad company. So either become a better worker or get a new job. If you are un-educated then learn a trade or get more education. You believe everyone should make the same amount and that is not the way it works.
union workers should be making nothing less than $120/hour plus benefits and retirement as they get back and hand problems and can only work so long before their body is shot. All people including people at coffee houses should be unionized and make the same wage regardless of skill but based only upon seniority. I'm at a non union restaurant and should be making the same as any auto worker because i'm on my feet all day and dealing with stress just as they put in bolts and weld.
rayallin 6 months ago 2
@rayallin I'd prefer if the wages and benefits of management was tied to that of the workers, so management only makes 2x the amount the workers make - that way you provide an incentive for giving the workers a bigger piece of the pie that they themselves have baked; after all, CEO's and boards of directors don't create any value, the workers do, and so I'd want to see worker self-management and cooperatives being encouraged, and unions being put on the board in remaining private companies.
atosafi1 6 months ago 13
@atosafi 2x, why should a manager make any more than the rest of us. Whats fair is we all make the exact same wage regardless of the job or skill and we all work the same 8 hours per day with 2 humain hours off for lunch and rest and bathroom breaks. Pay scale and vacation leave should be on seniority so we all work under the same rules completely fair including shop stewards and the the private firms should be forced to have 50% union management and share 50% in the profits to all workers.
rayallin 6 months ago
@rayallin Agreed, what I proposed(i.e management wages and benefits tied to workers, unions on boards of directors, laws and regulations that make it harder to hire and fire anyone for whatever reason etc.) is a beginning, a step in the right direction. We need to encourage and help worker- and consumer cooperatives, publicly-owned companies, worker self-management etc so as to phase out the hierarchy in private corporations and create a truly fair and equal society.
atosafi1 6 months ago
@atosafi1 Read Marx. He said it in much greater detail. Read about the Soviet Union and Communist China to see how it worked out.
rctube1958 6 months ago
@rctube1958 This topic has been discussed ad nauseam, and I won't bother with it because it doesn't look like you will bother changing your mind, but let me just ask you this question:
How on earth did you come to the conclusion that China is a communist country? Because it's ruled by a Communist Party?
Just because the powers that be call themselves that it doesn't mean it's true, just look at how America calls itself a democracy when it's really a plutocracy.
atosafi1 5 months ago
@atosafi1 To say management only gets paid 2x workers you have to find management that wants to work for that much. If you don't, you literally have to force them to work for that much. When you are forcing people to do work against their will it's slavery. Even if you are paying them.
So, why wouldn't you just have a number of the disgruntled union people break off, form their own company and pay workers 1x and management 2x?
Notice that doesn't happen. Ask yourself why.
sirellyn 6 months ago
@sirellyn Because they are at a disadvantage against the wealthy owners? I don't get the logic you people so often use, when you say e.g "You cannot raise taxes or companies will outsorce"; that is why we need regional and global agreements.
What we need is
1. Fair Trade, not Free Trade
2. An international minimum level with regards to wages, conditions, influence and safety
3. Harmonization of tax rates and outlawing of tax havens.
That's the only way to stop a Race to the Bottom.
atosafi1 6 months ago
@atosafi1 So break that down. Why are you at a disadvantage against the wealthy owners?
You never delve too deep into this question.
If you wanted to have the power to make boss decisions for yourself, isn't it important to understand how to be (good) bosses? Someone else should be the responsible boss, yet no one else ever is. In all the billions of people no labor leader or boss has tried to do this and been successful.
And don't wonder why? Really?
sirellyn 6 months ago
@atosafi1 To not make this too long I'll pick on point 3 for now. I just wonder where your priorities are... Saying it's better to give more money to the government, than it is to ask them to sacrifice even a fraction of half their budget that is going to unpopular wars and killing people abroad?
I mean you'd ask for more money before you'd ask them to stop? If you give them more money you'll absolutely get more war, and might get more social funding. (given recent history)
sirellyn 6 months ago
@atosafi1 Instead of lobbying the government to force everyone else into trying your (cool) idea, you should start a business and do it yourself! What a good model you would be for others, and conservatives couldn't criticize you guys (without being called crazy) because you created your horizontally-managed business voluntarily. This is what I want to see out of the left! Be creative! Develop alternatives yourselves rather than trying to impose your vision onto everyone.
vNorilor 5 months ago
@vNorilor I don't have the money to start a business, I'm a construction worker on sick-leave at the moment. You've probably also missed the fact that all markets today are dominated by 3-4 immensely powerful corporations that cooperate to keep prices high and wages low. Any new company that becomes a threat to their rule is instantly destroyed through undercutting and unfair competition or is bought
That's why this free-market fundamentalism doesn't work, it inevitably morphs into Corporatism.
atosafi1 5 months ago
@atosafi1 Yes, you should pool resources with like-minded compatriots. Your ideological narrative about who and how many dominate "all markets" (a hilarious claim) isn't an argument. Then you appeal to the classic undercutting and "unfair" competition (of course, YOU get to decide what is and isn't fair. lol) fallacies to make a massive, blanket claim about free markets not working. Do you know what corporatism IS? Hint: It requires YOUR policies. State intervention = regulatory capture.
@atosafi1 It morphs because of greed and the politicians go after the money instead of standing on principle. There own regulations that are out of control are causing the problems that we see today and are actually creating monopolies within the business communities. Which is why they keep saying too big to fail because they have propped these companies up so much that they cant allow them to go down or all the pension funds for the unions would go down also.
All these concessions to create tiers of different pay and benefits and agree to NOT STRIKE FOR YEARS is designed to thwart our exploiters' fears of our move to solidarity. Even 'ol socialist (lol) Obama is supporting this break-up of the base of union support and getting the union-member-back-drop nodding their heads up and down like the fools they are about how necessary it is to break their only power against our corporate masters and how the public unions better decide to self-destruct also.
Obama is owned by corporations. Wall Street firms especially funded his campaign very heavily. Obama works for these corporations instead of working for the American people. For Obama to get up there on the podium and act like he is a friend of the common laborer is an insult to workers everywhere in the U.S. Obama is no friend of the working man. In fact, the labor movement hasn't had a Democrat in the White House that will fight for them in many years. They've all been corporatists.
@mrx0066600 You're a little more optimistic than I am. The third party Candidate, if elected, will be politically marginalized by both legal and illegal means. He/She will be lambasted by the media. Sabataged by industry. And if all that fails... he/she will have a 'heart attack' or an 'accident' or just be plain gunned down in the streets. Don't Vote: There is no hope.
elbowbiter1 6 months ago
@mrx0066600 dude that's the whole trite and annoyingly incorrigible, tho true, nadar argument...everyone in washington do and will take money from big corps to subsist there-via them funding reelection campaigns etc....what is important ARE those differences between an obama and say a romney, those differences DO matter to people....we know we know, there's no enough parties, and the two big ones are "the same" blah blah blah...its about choosing the lesser of two evils really, that simple
carlo88moe 5 months ago
@carlo88moe
It shouldn't be.
And we should over throw this sorry excuse of an election system that only provides shit and shit with fabric softener.
I'm talking about a system that only runs on the people's money, making it illegal to donate money to politicians by any means other then through this system which would make sure that everyone had a fair showing. We have the internet, why are we doing things in this outdated fashion?
Where the ones who win are those that get bought the most.
mrx0066600 5 months ago
@mrx0066600 agreed! but i think we're way too spoiled 2consider go protesting in the streets for anything.Unfortunately the only ones who cld really affect that are the legislators we electwho R being lobbied by countless boogie men:finance,defense,corporations etc.Were a long road away from the discontent that would jerk us americans from our comfortable stupor to get us 2go demand change that grand,what really matters right now are fighting for those differences,however meek u might view them
The reality is we aren't all in this together. With attacks on unions and the ideology of competitive markets in play, workers are reduced to just being participants, when it would actually be impossible to have trade without real commodities (including services) being produced. Management is necessary in a market system, but that system inevitably perverts itself.
mikem1234 6 months ago
@mikem1234 That's right, Mike - non-interference in a spontaneous order is ideological, but interfering in said order by imposing moralistic visions (leftism) isn't. Unreal narcissism on your part.
vNorilor 6 months ago
@vNorilor I'm having trouble understanding your argument. Are you saying that the market system works in the best interests of most of the population, and that this belief (which is actually held by a lot of people) is actually true? Those who disagree lack a venue to voice their distaste because the power of money has has eliminated political dissent. What is spontaneous about an order (the market) that is constantly being forced on people as the only way to live life?
mikem1234 5 months ago
@mikem1234 The market system (whether mixed or pure) makes the largest number the most wealthy, yes. Another, neglected, virtue is that private property solves political moral conundrums as well. People on the left are free to create businesses with non-hierarchical decision-making patterns - They're free to pool resources and collectivize ownership via, not despite, contract and property. Property and contract form the necessary framework for liberal civilization. What you build is up to you.
vNorilor 5 months ago
@vNorilor By a market system, I mean individual private property and the commodification of all the Earth's resources, which does take political and social engineering to achieve. I just wanted to point out that conditions for the market's functioning are being engineered every day by the state, at the request of big capital owners like the Koch brothers. I'm not against "property," I'm against the ideology that it can only be used for individual greed.
mikem1234 5 months ago
@mikem1234 I'm happy that you're being friendly, but I've got to tell you rolling out the Koch Boogeymen hurts your cause. The state overrides and perverts the functioning of markets constantly. If your point is simply that liberal democracies mostly uphold property rights, cool. "...the ideology that it can only be used for individual greed". Libertarians don't defend property on those grounds - I don't think anyone does. Property, being a framework, is essentially whatever you build upon it.
vNorilor 5 months ago
@mikem1234 I disagree with your characterization of the anti-capitalist's situation. They have more than one venue. Academics in the humanities and social sciences are on the left in a strong majority. The average economist, even, is a moderate democrat. The claim that money has eliminated dissent seems like an emotional exaggeration to me. And finally, individualist property arrangements involve the least force, and the most opportunity for creative institutions! Socialistic ones included!
vNorilor 5 months ago
@mikem1234 If we apply a basic formulation of the presumption of liberty, what people do on their own - the solutions and institutions they choose and the ways in which they evolve, so long as they are not violating the autonomy of others, serves as a baseline. That baseline is the liberal property and contract framework. What I meant was that leaving people to their business is not ideological, but IMPOSING a moralistic vision, which is precisely what political leftism is, IS ideological.
sirellyn 6 months ago
@sirellyn When wealthy people ensnare more and more of their money into their fat bank accounts, less of it is circulated in the productive economy, and more of it is sent into market speculation, property values (their mansions), to private jets and sports cars, and abroad where they vacation. When union workers get more of that money, they spend it at home and immediately. They spend more of it on food, clothing, education, and health, all of which have much higher multiplier effect.
spartan2600 6 months ago
@spartan2600 Banks loan out deposited money. The more the better. Also, it's workers, union and not, who build the mansions, private jets and sports cars that the wealthy spend their money on. The jobs created by producing for the wealthy are good paying, skilled middle class jobs. So the money of the wealthy DOES end up in the economy, often in very productive ways.
rctube1958 6 months ago
@rctube1958 Yes but who"s economy??? Free trade is good for the wealthy who spend there money and own the manufacturing plants, but bad for the American worker who has no job to earn money, t cause its all made over seas. Look in the store the next time you go. See how many things you find made in America especially things people need every day. And if you say it to expensive to make in America the your whole paragraph need to be re- written
Kicker001911 6 months ago
@Kicker001911 If you don't think being able to buy goods for 1/10th the price they would cost to make in the USA is a good thing, you don't have to buy those things. I think most people prefer cheaper goods.
If you live in a developed country like the USA but your skills are only developed to the same level as a Chinese peasant with which you compete, you need to develop some skills that justify the higher salary you want.
@yuppyguitar1 I dont know what world your living in but good luck.
Kicker001911 5 months ago
@Kicker001911 Your question is an important one. Why has the basic consumer industry left America? Cost is one important factor, but the question remains "Why can't we produce the things found in the corner store? Especially since we did for decades." I believe it's because of the many financial, environmental and other regulations placed on business along with a tax code that encourages businesses to move off-shore.
rctube1958 5 months ago
@rctube1958 Greed.
Kicker001911 5 months ago
@Kicker001911 BTW, everyone benefits from free trade. The scam is in the many trade treaties entered into where America has traded away its competitive advantage. Check out Ross Perot from the early 90's.
rctube1958 5 months ago
@rctube1958 the loud sucking sound we would hear... thats the sound of jobs leaving America. Ross Perot was right. Your preaching to the chore. But it no free trade or free markets that America deals in. It Globalist agenda, corporate manipulation of the government and take over of the Government by infiltration of every agency by the industries they are supposed to police. Our Government has been hijacked. And is run by a group of criminals.
Kicker001911 5 months ago
@Kicker001911 Don't leave out the part about representatives being bought up by the handfuls and doing the bidding of Capital instead of The People just to buy brain-washing comercials to get elected/re-elected. That's where Obama is right now, and has probably been since forever.
Money corrodes the soul and too much money in too few hands corrodes society.
eliseville 5 months ago
@rctube1958 You've done nothing but proven that the rich are *entirely* economic vampires. Indeed, some scraps do fall off the kings table and get eaten up by paupers. However, you're ignoring the fact that *trillions* of dollars are leeched out of the *productive* economy by the rich and locked up in property, like $20 million plots of land in La Jolla California or $30 million plots of land in the Hamptons.
spartan2600 5 months ago
@rctube1958 Also, why are we wasting hundreds of billions on private jets when 1 out of 8 children are malnourished? Instead of paying workers to build yachts, which is as wasteful as paying them to dig and then fill the same hole, we should pay them to build shelter for the homeless, provide food for the hungry, create jobs for the jobless, etc. So no, the trillions wasted on producing lavish and extravagant lifestyles for American aristocrats are almost entirely wasteful.
spartan2600 5 months ago
@spartan2600 You explained WHY you should spend tax money on say a union worker, but not HOW it creates a net gain in money.
How is a certain amount of wealth able to produce more than what it originally was? Forget imaginary stock market gains, think real life. Theres 10,000 in the local town. I give you 20 dollars, how do you make the town net 10,050 dollars or more?
sirellyn 6 months ago
@sirellyn Foolish one, it's not how much, it's how many hands it smoothly flows through.
$1 in a bank vs $1 through an entire community's (say 50,000) bank accounts. Suddenly that $1 is now $50,000!
eliseville 5 months ago
@eliseville You are talking about a transfer 50k x for $1. I'm asking how you make more using that one. (without funny numbers like fractional reserve banking).
Say you have one hammer in an entire community. Yes you could pass it around 50k times, but how do you use that hammer to help make another?
sirellyn 5 months ago
@sirellyn But we're talking money, not hammers. Money can be used to buy many goods and services. If you pay someone, they can make you a functional hammer from raw materials, if that's what you want to buy, but it needs to be made here by people working here. Maybe instead, you'd rather get your car washed or have someone teach you Spanish or sing you a lullaby. Once that dollar gets flowing here in our community, anything can happen.
But flow is lost if it is spent outside of that community.
eliseville 5 months ago
@eliseville I was talking of wealth and prosperity actually, because as you said, money is simply an accepted medium of exchange. So given an amount of wealth, how do you get more? In a community it's easier to see the exchange but the same model works over large scale. You said it yourself though. Someone uses the hammer to build another. Now overall there are twice as many hammers. (more wealth).
