make your own kydex sheath with better retention. I made one right off the bat and carried it for 1.5 years until I switched to the CRKT minimalist. To make your own sheath costs about $3 in material and a little bit of your time.
I have had the same problem with the sheath. Larrydonnelly1 had a great tip on how to potentially solve this problem. I was just going to gorilla glue the seams together but his tip may work better and give the sheath some character. Good vid
Try drilling some small holes on each side of the outside of the top of the sheath and tie some heavy duty thread to keep the sheath seams together. Nutnfancy has a video on a sheath that he tied together and it works great. I really enjoy your videos!
I own this knife an i ve never had problems wih it, mine has serations, i used to carry it in my pocket s a work/utility knife but ive since switched to the cold steel Recon 1
GREAT Lil' knife I have had one since I first seen it.. Very good everyday use. I use on many utility needs.. The Kydex sheath can be modified with heat or drop of epoxy, Thus,no need for Tape on knife handle to fatten it up. Just heat up the kydex with small flame, or low heat solder iron's to squeeze the lock station in until you achieve a secure grip. This prevents un-docking of handle controlling the knife from, having unexpected bail-out EZ DOES IT small steps & succeed KAYO?
im 14... so i cant really get money all that easy, but ima buy this or some other neck knife when i got the chance. i used to be a folder freak, but now, i only like small full tang knives. boot knives and neck knives are my two favorite types. i really like this knife... and i hear that crkt is a really good company.
I had the same problem with my sheath, i stuck it in the oven to soften it, wrapped it in cloth and then clamped it til it went hard again - know its a tighter fit than when I bought it.
i was looking for a good cheap 20-30 neck knife and found a s&w SW990 black tanto knife at knifecenter do you think it is any good or what would you recommend?
I have the Dogfish. I love the look and feel of this knife. I heated the kydex and used small pliers to crush the kydex near the guard. Now the guard has to pop past the two indentations. It would be even better with another pair of rivets on the opening end.
i got this knife and i got it because in the summer i want a knife i can carry even if i dont have pockets or a belt.... i carry it for utility tasks and it has proven effective, came sharp enough to shave a hair but not sharp enough for me so after 15 minutes with a ceramic stone it got it hair popping sharp... welll the only thing is that the rivots can rust easly... thanks for the review
While I can't speak from the experience of owning this knife, I did check it out today at a show and the sheath wasn't secure at all. Which is a shame because the knife design is great. I got the CRKT Minimalist and the sheath is outstanding. The design isn't as utility oriented as the Dogfish but it definitely fits the role I bought it for.
@kevinjb7- great choice! i have one hanging from my neck as i write this! had it for few yrs and used the heck out of it, i wear it around the house and when i go out to town for a short trip. the becker or rat3 is on me when around the property and everything else,
just bought the knife a week ago and love it, bottle opener sucks though. It is super sharp. i worry about how long the sheath will hold the knife in as well...
yes that's what happen when you create too fast! lol it's true my wife is an artist and I amm telling her to slow down but she is addicted! lol when you go on full speed from the beginning, after a time you'll have nothing to review
@teekay989 I agree. There are sights you can search that would show you how to heat the sheath in an oven, insert the knife, then put pressure over the sheath to resize it and make it tighter. Thanks for the review!!!!
cutlerrylover what would be the best knife that straps to your leg via velcro that is 40.00 or under and has a blade length a min of 4 in and a max of 6 in
the best thing would be to get a new kydex sheath made with a rare earth magnet incorporated from jumpstreet into the bottom of the sheath and fully seald in or sewn into the bottom of the leather sheath.
simple solution i use on all my leather and kydex sheaths that get loose...get some "rare earth" nickel plated neodymium magnets and super glue them to the sheath opposite each other as close to the tip of the blade as you can...the knife almose jumps into the sheath and requires a decent tug to remove it...the magnets will need to be placed in an attraction relationship to pull towards each other obviously.
why don't you put the neck bead string thru the eye of the knife?
I thought this vid was to show what all the little designs are used for. As I used it on one of my TDY's and it came in handy a couple times for bottles and then 1 other use....it's not sharp enough to cut anything really...not sharp like what i am used to. Anyway, I put it in my travel bag..thanks
As Kydex is a thermo-plastic you might be able to heat the retention area with a lighter or maybe even a powerful hair dryer and push it in to increace the friction as that seems to be a step in making Kydex sheaths from scratch.
Well I got this knife about the time you did this review - and feel the exact same way. fine knife, crap sheath. I can't use it as a neck knife, just put it in my pocket in the sheath. Didn't know crkt had a new sheath design for the knife, so will call and try and get a replacement.
The new Dogfish knives come with the new (improved) sheath. If you need one for your old Dogfish, CRKT will send you one under warranty if you call them.
You could drill a hole in the sheeth and put a rubberband through the hole, then when you but the knife in, you just put the bubberband in the bottleopener.
its crazy but cool how many differtnt steels there are and there different characterstics. wish there was a list that told you best from worst, that would be bad ass
Hi. Heat the kydex/ plastic sheath and lay a large book on it till it cools down and your sheath will be tight again. Its easier with Kydex but will work with plastic sheaths.
I see you've traded the knife but for anyone who's interested..
My experience with CRKT is that their costumer service is very good. Send the sheath to them and I bet they'd fix it. you may also be able to buy a new sheath from the company email them to find out.
I just have to say that when it comes to their sheaths, while CRKT has improved in the last couple of years, in general they just have a history of screwing things up when manufacturing their sheaths. I recently lost my CRKT Ringer because the sheath didn't retain it properly.
It's just a shame that they (CRKT) still have problems like this considering that they put out some good, innovative designs at a reasonable pricepoint.

i don't own this knife but u might want to try this. in bowling when a persen's thum is to small for the thum hole in the ball, they use bowler's tape to fill the space. so u could maby aply this to your sheeth. btw i used to go bowling on sundays a cupala years ago. hope this helps. p.s. sry for the long comment.
thats one idea! someone told me that with this sheath material you cna just heat it up then remold it to the knife by squeezing it in a clamp to gte a better fit...
SAME PROBLEM WITH CRKT PARACORD-WRAPPED NECK KNIFE. GREAT KNIFE BUT ZERO CONFIDENCE IN SHEATHS HOLDING ABILITY. THE LARGER dragon HAS BEEN CARRIED HANDLE DOWN AND HAS SUCH A TIGHT FIT I*VE NEVER HAD A PROBLEM.. CRKT CUSTOMER SERVICE HAS ALWAYS BEEN TOP NOTCH. GREAT KNIVES
I know, but its not worth it for this cheaper knife to me...Plus I don't have any simple tools anymore to even cut it easily, so for now I temperarily fixed it by heating it up and sort of remolding it tighter...
Well I actualy thought about that idea, but then I realized that everyone is different, and what some peple want others just can't stand, so its about prefference, if your talkign mainly whats quaity over crap, the cost"usually" speaks for the knife if you know what I mean...
I have CRKT Triumph N.E.C.K. with merc harness and I have the same problem with the shealth. It has belt loop system, but I would be very unfortable with upside down carry. I should try to fix it (and I think it wouldn't be really that difficult).. It's a nice knife in all other means.
Your welcome! There was a guy on candlepowerforums in the knife section who has this same knife and he had taken the finish off and polished it up, looks even nicer!
Thanks for the idea...I saw that you cna easily heat the kydex in an oven or toaster oven at like 275 for a few minutes, when it gets soft I cna remold like you said...Ill see what I can do...I wish I could just afford the Tom Krein custom version...lol...
Yeah you can do it in the oven but that is better for kydex before its molded. I also love Toms work and i have a bunch of folders want to have him to do regrinds for.
Actually yeah I did try that, they seem to be tight, it is just the design of the sheath, it looks as if the openign space at the edn is too wide, a good kydex sheath or molded sheath should flex a bit when pushign the knife in, then the blade shoud almost snap into place, but with this one putting it in is way to easy and no flex equals no resistance when its in there...But thanks for trying to help...
5 stars, excellent review, very interesting since my next knife is probably going to be a smaller fixed blade knife, anyways wondering if you could glue on a thin magnetic strip.
Thats a good idea, didn't think of it...Thanks, if I come across some magnetic tape I will try it! Well I am not sure if I should say it because I am not 100% yet, but I might buy some stuff to make my own kydex sheaths...If I do I will just make this one a new sheath myself...Well see...Thanks for the nice comment...
Also to sell knives ate bladeforusm you need to be a paying member, but its free to sell over at knifeforums as well as other sites like candlepowerforums and edcforums...You can buy for free from all of the forums...
Yeah, the knife related forums have trade sections, for the most part people buy and sell outright, but many are willing to trade...Just look at the sub forums of knifeforums dot com and bladeforums dot com...I have to spell dot com out because I can;t post links in these replies...
