I figure the robot wanted to know who he was and as it turns out it was because of his kind the world is the way it currently is. The outlaw he rescued along with himself must of understood this and felt it was best that he would be destroyed in order to avoid another holocaust.

Actually the outlaw killed hte robot because the information he thought he could out from it. And nature of the robot was to help the humans why he activated the gun for the outlaw.
