  • Ahmedou Ould-Abdallah, the UN envoy for Somalia confirmed to Al Jazeera the world body has "reliable information" that European and Asian companies are dumping toxic waste, including nuclear waste, off the Somali coastline.

  • As a union member, this is ridiculous.

Being a union member has nothing to do with this.

  • Give me a break. It was the non-union U.S. Navy that brought this to a happy conclusion. All this union talk is bullshit.

  • To help any worker in distress must be a daily guide in the life of every trade union and its individual members. Labor solidarity means just that. Unions have to accept the fact that solidarity of labor stands above all else. The basic aspirations and desires of the workers throughout the world are the same. Workers are workers the world over. International solidarity, particularly among maritime workers, to their protection and a guarantee of reserve economic power in times of strife.

  • The only direct argument to make against the value in the union-lead, anti-piracy training is to argue that it would've been more cost-effective for the employer to allow the crew to die and replace pirated equipment. As an employer or company insurere, I'd consider training the employees a sound idea, and I'd be thanking them for bringing that to my attention.

  • Can we all agree that, in the least, the captain and crew thwarting the pirates is at least a parable underscoring the strength of unions? Their training in defence against pirates is credited by the captain and crew, i.e. They made a case for that training, because they knew more than their employer the value of that training. The employer won, because the employees, through their union, made a strong case for something of value to the company. The employees won, because they're not dead.

  • Man the rich really have some working class dupes doing their dirty work. I refer to the haters of this video. Talk it up, folks. Be anti-union. The best slave is a willing slave. Righteous dupes are so much cheaper than lobbyists.

As for me, I'm glad the SEIU is promoting this. Keep it up. Thank you.

  • I am in a union, but the SEIU is a communist group calling themselves a union.

The AFL-CIO does not recognize SEIU as any part of the union in American.

That's because they are from over seas and not American.

  • Yea it was the union, that saved them. Yep without that union all those guys would be dead, yep. The union did it all.

  • Jesus was a carpenter, and he chose not to be in a union?! I bet he would have, if it'd been an option.

You know what Jewish people had before there were unions? Centuries of unpaid work as slave labourers. Those are your options: unions, or slavery.

  • Union members: Stick together, like American semen!

  • The SEIU is part of the Communist Party.

Do not let the communist fool you.

  • by the way i enjoy my weekends off, my 40 hours a week schedual, the labor laws that dont force my young children to work in sweat shops and minimum wages and workers rights, faught for and won by unions oh how soon history is forgotten...

  • i have sailed both non union and union ships

it was the american spirate the same you saw in WW2 that faught desparatley to deliver goods in the face of danger, that got that ship to its port

sailers tend to stick together in general, navy and merchant marine, in spite of the typical and good natured teasing between departments they still take care of each other

i am proud to be american and proud of my navy, and secondly i am proud to be member of a merchant marine union!

  • If you can't think and speak for yourself you might need a union.

"their is not a level too low for unions to go to sell their propaganda bullshit....."

Yes there is: The level of Big Busines and their paid liars in politics and the media.

"Lincoln chose NOT to be in a union.... Ghandi chose NOT to be in a union.... "

    Lawyers don't have unions.

  • "Lincoln chose NOT to be in a union.... Ghandi chose NOT to be in a union.... "

Lawyers don't have unions. Lawyers have the Bar Association.

And Lincoln took this country into the deadliest war it has ever fought to preserve a union.

  • The Bar Association is not a union. It's a proffessional association. They don't collective bargain and they don't strike.

And Lincoln didn't take this country into war, the south took this country into the deadliest war it has ever fought to destroy a union when they started it by firing on Fort Sumter.

  • wow they make this bigg ohh they heroes clap for them dibshit

  • "......Jesus chose NOT to be in a union...."

Really? So what was that "Father, Son, Holy Spirit," thing all about?

  • This video has GOT yo be a fucking joke. Unions are the reason they fought off the pirates??? DONT MAKE ME FUCKING LAUGH! Every union member I know is a whining lazy ass.

  • To organize the unorganized must be the cardinal principle of any union worth its salt; and to accomplish this is not merely in the interest of the unorganized, it is for the benefits of the organized as well.

The basic aspirations and desires of the workers throughout the world are the same. Workers are workers the world over. International solidarity, particularly among maritime workers, to their protection and a guarantee of reserve economic power in times of strife.

  • .

To help any worker in distress must be a daily guide in the life of every trade union and its individual members. Labor solidarity means just that. Unions have to accept the fact that solidarity of labor stands above all else, including even the so-called sanctity of contract.

  • Anything that detracts from labor unity hurts all labor. Any group of workers through craft unionism or through cozy deals at the expense of others will in the long run gain but little and inevitably lose both its substance and its friends. No matter how difficult the going, a union must fight in every possible way to advance the principles of labor unity.

Workers are indivisible. There can be no discrimination because of race, color, creed, national origin, religious or political belief.

  • In brief, It is the membership of the union which is the best judge of its own welfare; not the officers, not the employers, not politicians and fair weather friends of labor. Above all, this approach is based on the conviction that given the truth and the opportunity to determine their own course of action, the rank and file in 99 cases out of 100 will take the right path in their interests of all the people.

Labor unity is at all times the key for a successful economic advancement.

  • A union is built on its members. The strength, understanding and unity of membership can determine the unions course and its advancements. The members who work, who make up the union and pay dues, can best determine their own destiny. If the facts are honestly presented to the members in the ranks, they will best judge what should be done and how it should be done.

  • you just ask any communist or fascist govt and they will tell you - unions are trained to kick some ass.

Like the captain of the ship emphasized - the military deserves all of the credit.

The reason we have lost so many jobs overseas is a direct result of the unions. That is why the SEIU is the last man standing - it is a service economy. That sector will be next to go - good bye.

  • Support EFCA now!! Call your Senator!

  • I salute the Crew of the Maersk Alabama. That same we stuck together, we did our jobs attiude is what makes Union members everwhere proud.

As Americans continue to struggle throught these hard times, I think of how expanding the ability to join a Union will better the lives millions.
