I had this surgery done, but my arachnoid cyst was very big...its only of very late that they are able to use technology to operate and fenestrate a cyst this big. All my life Ive always had to have numerous shunts to relief pressure, but as of 2 weeks ago im shunt free. :)
If any of you know you've got them and suffer from EXTREME Pain form MINGEGRANS (NOT headaches!!!), ask your Doctor/GP for a Drug Called SUMATRIPTAN, this tops a Minegrain attack and also ask for a Drug called 'PIZOTIFEN', you take 3-6 EVERY NIGHT and it is supposed to prevent a Mingrain attack. Hope this helps!!
Ooh so that's what it looks like... I got mine removed around 2 years ago, and before the operation there was just some random headaches but my doc insisted the operation... Now after two years I feel like I could die, and it's all because of the cyst grown back :( I might be getting a shunt this summer... Or that's what my doc said.
When I had my left temporal arachnoid cyst fenestrated, the neurosurgeon said the fluid shot across the room! Unfortunately, the relief from surgery lasted only a few months, then back to the pain and problems.
Hi IB. It's brave and caring of you to share this video with us. I was wondering why would the cyst grow back after surgery? I mean does the sack form into shape again in the hollow space after removal?
YA, IT IS LIKE A SPIDER WEB MORE LIKE, IT IS LIKE A NET HOLDING YOUR BRAIN. The Cyste just grows in this around this web layer that surrounds your entire brain.
My son has an arachnoid cyst and had surgery when he was nine months old. He got a CP shunt and was doing fine for the past 5 years until he had meningitis. The surgeons had to replace the shunt because it was contaminated. But now he's fine. His surgeon originally recommended the shunt instead of fenestration because fenestration is more dangerous and one may end up needing the shunt anyway. I think the shunt was an excellent option. My son does sports and goes to school like normal kids do.
Thanks for posting this video. I found out about 6 months ago that I have an arachnoid cyst too. My doctor is really cocky and just wants to jump in and do surgery. He told me that it was the only way to fix the head aches. Oh and anyone else who has this problem DO NOT get an epidural (just in case they screw up) I was born with this cyst but it didnt become symptomatic until people messed up my epidural causing a spinal fluid leak when having my son.
sounds familiar, my dr was cocky too, and the cyst wasnt too symtomatic, till he operated on it now its very symptomatic, i only found out about medication options afterwards. theres a support group on yahooif you want more info lots of ppl there will answer lots of q's. over the 3 1/2 years ive been watching that board i havnt seen too many success stories from operations to be honest.
So i take it you wouldn't recommend the procedure? my 8 yr old has daily headaches and nausea; they found a 5cm cyst, yet say its not causing any headaches. hmm.
every cyst is different, and i am not a doctor. so i cant really say. In my experience the operation was a bad idea. I wish i seen a few more different dr's for their opinions before jumping into surgery. There where meds and things that i could of tried 1st but wasnt offered. See more than 2 dr's and ask any questions you can think of.
Also dont follow everything you read on the net some very uneducated people write medical websites, just cause they have the problem, not a medical degree. I read and believed a bit too much from early internet research. every person i have spoken to with this medical problem on the net 3 and a half years ago, still has the same problems now, most worse. A lot of these people have all these problems because they tried every surgery their drs wanted to.
Thanks for your reply. Will do everything to avoid surgery, because I think you're right; it's not an easy solution and the results are not always great.
IB--Why do you think it was a bad idea? What do you do for your headaches. What meds could you have taken. Our son has a large, left fronto-temp AC--I'm opposed to surgery--my husband thinks it will be the answer to all of his probs. What were your pre-op symptoms? How big was it? Son's is size of a large egg. mc
its same size as it was pre op, there is another video in my profile that shows the size of it, about as big as a large orange. since the op dr's have tried me on about 15 different types of meds, some of these would have been a better idea to try b4 surgery. pre op i just had occasional really intense headaches and a feeling of a blocked left ear all the time.
cp--our son has one that's 6cm (size of egg) on left, fronto-temporal lobe. Have you seen a neurologist or neurosurgeon? Where is his located? Ours has LDs possibly due to cyst...mc
post op i have the same problems, but intense headaches are more frequent and now effected by what i do, ie more physical activity = more pain. and now i have a light to heavy headache all the time 24/7. i have seen both neurosurgeons and neurologists. i only seen neurologist after surgery, i would have prefered to see this first if i had known better.
i have an arachnoid cyst. I have had a constant headache for the last 7 years, my doctor told me it was a sleeping disorder. It was not until i lost my hearing, that they worried and sent me in for an MRI, where i learnt i have an arachnoid cyst.
isntbrain, thanks for posting this. My father had chronic severe headaches for most of his adult life. Sure enough, it turned out to be an arachnoid cyst. His headaches are gone, but he's severely debilitated.
Our family doctor just wrote them off as severe sinus headaches. How I wish I could turn the clock back.
I had this same procedure done by the same doctor. Does anyone know if the red tisue around the hole (I think it's called the periosteum) regrows after it has been removed? Thanks
maybe because they just don't use their brains anymore, like in the attic when you don't use or clean stuff spiders and spider webs are just gonna be around the corner lol
Your headaches should get weaker as time goes by. Its probably just the damage the cyst caused around the brain tissue. Also all that pressure getting released. But you should go get checked out if they persist or get worst. Might be something else.
Not sure why anyone would be offended. The video is of a brain surgery. They don't go into that sort of thing likely, so it probably beats the alternative by a mile.
Hello... My brain surgery went well! I was out the hospital 2 days later... They withdrew a dry nut of blood and I m OK now. Next step... the aneurism!!!!
all brain surg is scary, ive heard of many successful attempts tho. best to feel relaxed + good with it 1st, your body gets stressed over it if you do from what ive heard.
Hic--How is your son doing now? Our son has a large, left fronto-temporal ac and we're wondering about surgery for him. What were your son's synptoms? mc
its the arachnoid membrane, everyone has it, it holds the fluid in around the brain. in this case there is an extra sack of it filled up causing pressure on the brain
Man, when I read the title "arachnoid tumor" and then saw filaments waving out of the hole after the blood spurted, I swear to God I thought a litter of spiders were crawling out. Good to see you're ok, isntbrain.
Nope, you can see the slight latex wrinkles. He's probably wearing MicroThin or Protegrity Micro SMT gloves, super thin latex for maximum sensitivity. Eye surgeons use them too.
Haha, yeah - It's only when your surgeon wants ribbed gloves when you should start worrying :P I'm just guessing what make of glove he's wearing btw, they could be any one of a number of types.
Aggressive pressure at 15 seconds.

brain. You have to cut or tear through it to get into the brain.
