  • Music mis-match brings this great clip a disservice. Recent dobro country music should instead have been instead replaced with typical pop (it IS NYC) music of the period, i.e. Bing Crosby, Shep Fields Rippling Rhythm, etc., which would have suited it and set it off authentically...

  • Thats no motorman !

  • Country music traveling through Harlem, you guys know your stuff!

  • Hah!!!

  • In those days, tie, jacket and hat even under the shower!!

  • When men were gentlemen!

  • is there more of the nyc trip north of the mt. vernon west station?

  • that's awesome. I love seeing this vintage stuff. don't forget, every December on Sundays at specific times, you can ride these old trains. I rode one of these kinds of trains in this video. Boy are they loud going through the tunnel.

  • Im not into trains but there is something facinating about this footage

  • Wow

I'm happy to view this! Right after Fordham road there is the third avenue el above going toward Webster avenue. Up to the right and above is the "Bronx Park Terminal spur" of that number 8 train.I've looked high and low for a photo and there it is in video! yea!

    Thanks

  • Glad that after all this time discoveries are still being made! I hope more folks will recognize the scenery along this ride.

  • It's the old 138th St Bridge(Harlem River Bridge). It has since been replaced with a lift bridge. Oak Point is a different part of the Bronx.

  • Thanks for this info. I have been a fan of these videos & I have a map published by the NY/NJ Port Authority in the 1990's showing rail lines. I will now have points to look for on that map.

  • Hey, best street by street description yet! Things have changed since 1937, but not enough to make footage unrecognizable I guess.

    Thanks!

  • Thanks for sharing! This is cool stuff.

  • These were 16MM films bought at yard sale in the 1980's. I have no way of identifing them unless someone recognizes men driving the train. All the 1930's railway footage I have posted came from the same place. Glad I could share them. Enjoy!

  • What a find!

  • Again, this is a fabulous film that belongs in the Smithsonian. I'm overjoyed that you shared it with us - is there a story behind this film? Who shot it originally?

  • Not sure. Maybe someone else will know for sure. Enjoy the ride.

  • Harlem Line NB

  • Thanks for narrowing it down. I guess some of the landmarks are still there. Now if someone knew the engineer.

  • This is the New York Central in the electrified New York City suburban territory. - Henry

  • Thanks Henry, I knew someone would recognize the footage. I have always enjoyed the "ride".
