Seems this movie has been made a little bit political correct in order to pass the Cannes censors, I must have been in a different army. 1SSB gunner 1978 - 1980 and till the end.
As an English speaking South African I got called soutpiel and rooinek and all that but it certainly wasnt as bad as what this movie makes it out to be. My best mates in the army were all Dutchmen
. Also at the start of the movie the guy carrying his balsak on his way home has no insignia on his barret which I found strange.
Klaad in at 1 SAI Bloemfontein, did my training at Oudtsoorn Infantry School and 5 (SAI) Ladysmith then finally ended up as a border patrol guard at Ladybrand, Freestate.
@phillipgfromsa1 The army language sounds authentic, the term soutp... was used a lot in my unit of ssb in late 70's. We for sure had instances where the instructors forced recrutes to speak Afrikaans. There were also a bit of racism practised, but all of this were the exception. In the span of 2 years we all became big buddies, English, Afrikaans and also developed respect for different cultures and religions.
But movies usually are about the exception cases and it is wrong to deny that these things happened. I think the recreation of our army days was done pretty well by the youngster student filmmaker; some mistakes though but I would say a good effort in dealing with tough and controversial issues...
A brilliant, accurate portrayal of the time. My husband belonged to the End-Conscription campaign and was abused in the army by corporals for that. He also refused to carry a weapon, so the ongoing abuse continued for his full two years.
danie is een klootzak

If no one saw him carrying the tire, why couldn't he just roll it down the mountain? Why do I need to think of everything?

@phillipgfromsa1 Quite correct. I think this is a gatkruip "movie". And I use inverted commas intentionally.

The ECC were a bunch of liberal wankers and I would like to hear what their comments are now on the ANC's ability to govern.
