Sounds so much better when one is in love... I remember coming home from an event after spending all day with someone I really liked. On the bus ride home I listened to this song, and it was the most beautiful thing I had ever heard. Now things have gotten a little complex it sounds more sad than anything.
What a unique sound! I havent heard anything like it. For me this tone and feel puts me in a place i havent been in a long time. Thanks for the up :-)
@ciqjeuighqryquiryenu don't like it? dont listen to it. im not trying to be mean; im sure you get just as pissed when someone says mean things about songs you like. everyone has songs they like. go listen to what you like.
Sorry, we seem to have struck a nerve. Tom Waits has had a successful 35 year career. He's not for everybody, but he must be doing something right. This isn't pop music, it's more complex and it's not for the simple-minded...no offense.
If you like this, you should give Tin Hat Trio a listen. Same violinist. Tom throws a favor back to Tin Hat Trio when he appears on one album on a reprise of the song "Helium". It's a must-listen for any Waits fan. Carla is also in Sleepytime Gorilla Museum for the more adventurous music fan...and she appears as a musician in the Mr Bungle California album.
It's just a regular violin on this track, not a stroh violin (which is used on several of the other tracks on Alice: Poor Edward, Fish and Bird, Reeperbahn, etc.). It's played with false harmonics, meaning that you make artificial harmonics on the string by splitting it at various points with the index finger. Not to turn this into a cheap plug (especially since I love this song so very much), but there's a video of me playing it on my channel if you're interested.
@ciqjeuighqryquiryenu The reason it's so squeaky is that it's played on a saw, as in a wood saw, played with a violin bow. He bends the saw in order to change the pitch. In a nutshell, he's a ridiculously technically skilled musician, and doesn't deserve this sort of no-brained response to his work.
@Chris28494 that's not tom playing the stroh violin or the saw....it is Carla Kihlstedt, a very talent violinist. TOm probably wrote the part though. He doesn't play violin.
this is so beautiful. i don't understand who couldn't appreciate the absolute perfection of this piece, enhanced by what some consider to be imperfections. Alice album- the best by Tom Waits :)
god. damn.

Actually bkirk918 is right. Your comment was unintelligent and lacking in insight. Regardless of musical taste it was a dumb thing to write.

@Chris28494 It may be "technical" but it sounds bad none the less
ciqjeuighqryquiryenu 1 year ago
@Chris28494 It's not a saw, it's a special type of violin called a Stroh Violin. it has a metal phonograph-like resonating horn.

@Chris28494 undoubtedly oozing with talent, sounds like the kind of artist would could produce music from the pieces of a broken chair if asked.
