I can't imagine that would do anything but beat up your duvet to a pulp. The item is too bulky for the washer to turn it. Now if you had a front loader that would be a different story.
I guess the majority of people would presume the machine had washed the duvet OK, without the lid open. I remember trying wash a sleeping bag in a Speed Queen T/L when on holiday once. It came out covered in lumps of clotted powder...
true but we do our duvets (or comforters as we call it) in a toploader theres tricks to get it evenly saturated like soaking it evenly loading it in and pushing it down once in the wash and once in the rinse to get the air gap out usually comes out fresh. take care

@SpazChat You gotta use one of the commercial ones for these. I had to use a standard FL when I was at college, it did not clean well at all.

It came out very fresh. I used liquid detergent. It works very well with most items but the duvet is too heavy and bulky wen wet... :-)
