it is always a good idea to coat on both sides to build stencil thickness. The thickness of the emulsion is what dictates the amount of ink that you are able to put down which is what will give you coverage.
@wznpersuasion I find good quality laser printers work good too. Get some toner enhancer/darkener too. Never had issues burning in screens with transparencies made with a laser printer.
It is really a very fabulous job you have done. I am really enjoying this. Hey check out printfly on google and create a variety of custom t-shirt design.

Wow! this brings back memories. I used to print shirts at MJ Soffee. My fingers would be so sore every morning from pulling that squeegee. I worked on a six color carousel. One thing, at Soffee, they didn't bother with a press or pallet for one color prints. They would just lay the shirts right out on the table and lay the screen on it and squeegee it. But you had to be really good at it not to smear it.
Ryonet, I just recently bought everything I needed to start my own screen printing, and I have a lot of different designs I've done. They are all paintings and ink drawings though. How can I get these to a film positive? Do I need a special printer or something?

wtf. all this shit costs around 1k easy. surely this isnt the way warhol did it. lol. i want to do this but really??? too long of a process and to many materials haha. stencil and industrial spray paint ftw :DDD
That's only one color, I want to see that spiky hair guy print 2 or more colors (6 would be great) on multiple shirts on a press that spins!
I guess I'm just mad since I'm not a Marketeer trying to sell a cash cow. I really should have been a Marketeer!!!!!
The spiky hair guy said it himself, your only going to get "good registration" on the stuff they sell and that is not what I want. Youtees is what you want if you want to screen print quality shirts and not pay a Marketeer!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I want to print PVC business cards with silk screen print, and id like to know what options there are for inks, a)how many colour b)glossy or matte option c)transparent ink like varnish to make a matte card looks like glossy on this area
One question: Do I have to work in total darkness when working with emulsion? Or can I work with relative darkness? I mean since I dont have a UV light if I isolate a room from darkness but still have light coming in from the bottom of the door, can Istill work with that?
I couldnt find a yellow Bug light, all I coucld find was called also Bug light" but the light is blue and the seller told me he does not think it is UV safe. Is it better to do it in darkness? or relative darkness? Or can I try the blue light anyway?
Before anyone starts any business. Make sure that you know that this is what you really wan't to do. See how many people do the same thing in your area. Make sure that if you decide to do screen printing what level of screen printing you want to do. To do it on a level to make money you need to invest a lot of money. not a starter kit.
If you want to meet your contract fast or on time, then you will need these things. If it's just a home project you can just mess around. Seems like most of us here want to make some money out of this though
i have a question if i drew my multiple color design on a blank sheet of paper am i suppose to transfer it to adobe photo shop or draw it on photoshop?
Ultimately you need to be able to transfer it to film positives so whatever way works for you. You could scan it in and separate the colors in Illustrator or using spot process software.
usually nylom mesh. but it comes in different micron sizes so i wouldnt just buy any old mesh. if you go on ryonet's website, they have some screens on there.
Actually this is easy, I did commercial screen making in the mid 70's for Illinois Moulding Co in Chicago and it was a gel coated paper you soaked in potassium dichromate that stained your hands brown then you had to put acetate on top of the gel side, put it on a vacuum table, place the Ortho film positive on top, close the table, vacuum out, expose with a carbon arc lamp. When done you pulled the acetate, put on a screen and rolled, pulled the paper backing, washed then used a blocking varnish
A lot of the emulsion type now can be washed out to recover the screen as well, the old days you cut the screen off and restreched cloth on it and made a new one. We printed onto glass sheets so remakes due to cuts was normal. No flash driers - just racks with fans. No printers, either a photographic Ortho film or hand cut gel on acetate. Very time consuming and lots of dangerous waste including lacquer thinner since we printed with lacquers and washed them out end of shift or end of run.
Great video.I am looking into screen printing for myself, but what about shading capabilities for depth and detail in artwork? How do I learn how to print with shading in my artwork?
Thanks Ryonet! My dad works for a printing shop and he has his own press at our house and im thinking of printing some of my Tall tees and sell them at my school. Have some extra cash, and ill wear em too
it seems like theres no way to properly cure using diy methods. i have not found much help and all the pros just tell me to buy a conveyer which means big buck$.
What would you classify as "DIY" methods? A heat gun works, although time consuming, and you can cure using a flash dryer as well which is much less than a conveyor dryer.
This was very helpful! My dad and I are going to start a little screen-printing business--already have most of the quipment, the screens, the press, etc. I checked this out to understand the process a little better before we begin. Thanks, this helped a lot!
better than most i have seen, i am a screenprinter. you should have mentioned that if the emulsion seems hard to spray out you may have over exsposed your stencil. also you should explain pin holes and saw toothing as well as using tainted emulsion after coating should be kept seperate and could be used as a blockout device in lieu of tape. but tape does help in the cleaning and reclaiming process. mike
Thanks for your input Mike. Again, this was just an overview to explain to people how the process works. We're pretty clear on the video that it in no way covers everything you need to know. However, we do offer extensive training options including many more videos here on youtube.
Ryonet I just started a workout clothing line and I am going to buy the semi pro package from your web site. Looking forward to learning everything I can about this rewarding business.
This wasn't a tutorial, just an overview. I wouldn't want people thinking that all they need to know about screen printing they can get from this video. There's a lot more to it than that.
Pretty good tutorial, but I wouldn't recommend people to use spray tac unless your printing a bunch of hoodies. I use this glue similar to white school glue. You coat the pads with a hand squeegee and when they loose their stick, wipe clean with a wet rag. It works much better and spray tac is just gross.
emulsion remover is just a quick and easy way. spraying does take literally hours. i have to do it because im a student wiv no money lol. its prolly recommended to use the remover i was jus putting another option out there.
if you spraythe screen long enuff with a pressure hose itll come out eventually! takes a while tho! and will take longer if u use your shower or hose. just keep spraying.
