The "championship" game between FSU and Tennessee was poorly played that year, further highlighting OSU was clearly the best team in the country. OSU's schedule was top notch that year, highlighted by a victory over Tom Brady's Wolverines.
It was reported after the game that Musburger had to drown his sorrows by downing a couple of Budweisers in the parking lot after his beloved Bucks lost.
I watched this game from my dorm room in McDonel Hall. Years later I still cannot believe MSU pulled this one off. Truly one of the biggest upsets in college football history. This just goes to prove that any team can beat any team on any given day (and that goes for all sports at all levels).
This had to suck for OSU fans, but ultimately it was for the best because Cooper wouldn't have been fired two years later if he would have won the championship in 98.
Looking at absolute talent, this was the best OSU team ever. Instead, people hardly remember them because they lost this game (other than winning Rose Bowl). And TJ Turner went to my rival high school...he was a legend in southeast Ohio growing up but decided to throw it all away. Such a shame the choice SOME of these guys make
I hope Saban shows this to the Bama players before EVERY game this season...games against the teams you're supposed to beat mean nothing until you lose one of them!
The Michigan losses in the 90's were no doubt the reason Cooper lost his job, but I believe this loss was the #1 most devastating loss he ever had. There was really no excuse to lose to this michigan state team. Looking ahead to the Michigan game is what i thought it was all about. Just lack of focus.
I was a sophomore at MSU during this win. You want my honest opinion about it? Big fucking whoop. This MSU team, like most during those days, had absolutely no character, no discipline and they played hard WHEN THEY FELT LIKE IT. The very next week, this MSU team lost AT HOME to a so-so Purdue team and ultimately finished the season 6-6. Sorry, but I don't celebrate teams that don't play hard all the time. And believe me, half these guys walked around campus like they were GODS.
The ONE year osu doesn't choke and killed by Michigan in the 90's, Michigan State beats them. The only time I'll want MSU to win is when they play these fucking idiots.
@thedynamic35 That's probably because your team hasn't had a clue how to beat "these fucking idiots" in, what, about a decade now right? Might as well leave it up to "little brother" to do what you guys can't.
even after all of tressel's years this was absolutely the best osu team of my lifetime, maybe ever. but most non-osu people have forgotten them. this is the beauty and the beast of college football...you don't show up for one half of one game and your hopes and dreams are ruined.
it's games like this that will never let me take the 2002-03 national title for granted.
I blame the sucktasticness of MSU football over the past 10 years on Nick Saban's leaving.
We're weren't crazy good under him, but we had a solid defense and got good enough players that we won games we were supposed to... and some we shouldn't have.
Thank god we got rid of John L(oser) Smith. Dantonio seems to be a better coach... and his ditched the sissy spread.
That entire season leading up to this game, we knew we were the best, just waiting for the final game, just seemed no excitement prior to that first weekend in November. I can see how MSU snuck up on us.
@amesburyroad If OSU were the best, then they would have made it to the title game.
Oh wait, Tennessee went undefeated that year. No losses. Ever. To be the best you have to beat the best. Tennessee beat #2(5) Florida and #2(3) FSU on their way to the championship. Hardest OSU opponent? #8(11)TAMU. In the bowl game. FSU beat TAMU with a similar score in 98.
Nope, not the best. That's why OSU was #2 and left out of the title game. Get over it.
I'm not an MSU fan but i thank them for beating osu that year. personally i thought osu had the best team in the country that year great win for sparty!
I watched this game at a sports bar in Los Angeles when UCLA was (believe it or not) ranked #2 or #3. So when OSU lost, the place erupted, and me and two other Buckeye fans had to endure endless taunts.
I was at this game. I've never heard the Horseshoe so quiet (eerie, really) after that last interception in the endzone. All that could really be heard was a small section of MSU fans cheering on the opposite side of the stadium. One of the best OSU teams ever, but they didn't come to play that night. A combination of Michigan St. simply outplaying them and Cooper's horrible play calls in the 4th sealed the deal. Definitely a classic game for an MSU fan.
I hate these stupid one sided videos. This was a great game, but you only see it from one perspective: Michigan State's, so it's not displayed as well as it could be.
to put it politely, The Spartans weren't 4 touchdown favorites this year. This is the biggest choke in all of professional sports history. OSU was favored this year and they won, big whoop. So i'll keep the trash talk to a maximum, jackass
Hard to believe that this game was nine years ago. Just seems like it was yesterday I watched it. Watching this video made me feel like when I saw it back in 1998, hard to believe that the Spartans upset the Buckeyes, but they did. Great Game! Thanks for posting it.
Im an MSU you fan but the buckeyes are the Dominant Program in the big ten aint nobody in the Big ten fuckin with OSU. They're just to good. oh yeah U-M sucks. They will never beat MSU by more than 7. and they'll continue to get splapped around by The Bucks. GO GREEN!
This game wouldn't of been close if they would of scored touchdowns instead of 30 yard field goals!!! MSU completely outplayed them!! And OSU even had an interception for a td when MSU was getting ready to score again!!!
no look at the game stats....everything is convincingly in MSU's favor. OSU led 17-3 after 1 quarter. They were outplayed 25-7 the rest of the game, and that 7 was an interception return for a TD.
Woops, I meant. "The Spartans were decent, but not amazing except in 1999." I think Charles Rogers was with them at that time. Also, they did upset U of M in 2001.
This game is what made me a Michigan State fan... Too bad there weren't many other miracles since then. Just an upset over Michigan, Wisconsin, and the biggest comback in NCAA Football Div-1A history. The Spartans were decent, but not amazing except in 2001 with Charles Rogers. So don't feel bad Bucks. I hope things change for Michigan State against U of M next week.
It was my birthday and my first year cheering for the Buckeyes. Nine years later, I haven't forgotten the ridicule I received from MSU fans. Let's hope it's not repeated - may justice win out.
Man I remember watching this game at home, we were up and I was tired so I ended up passing out in the chair.
I woke up and spent like 5 minutes trying to focus my vision because it looked like MSU had come back to take the lead... and they did haha. What a bummer that was.
Thanks Nick Saban...for nothing...

Poor sparty. In typical sparty fashion you lost your last two games of the season after this big upset.

@MrSmitty50 lol. That just makes this loss even worse- you lost to a 6-6 team. Congrats "mighty" Buckeyes XD.
Oh, and nice job on your stats, dipshit. "...lost your last two games of the season"
Last 2 MSU games: 41-9 WIN against Illinois, 28-51 loss against Penn State.
Way to be a typical Buckeye douchebag. I hope you were crying the entire game today against Sparty. But it wasn't much of an upset.
