  • Thanks for all the info, folks. I did not know all this about this song. This is still my favourite U2 song. And the Joshua Tree still remains one of the greatest albums of all time. I have good memories of this song in Joshua National Park in Nevada of all places. Heh. Cheers.

  • One tree hill is now no tree hill thanks to the idiotic modern day Honi Heke. Wake up people to a world that is everyones not just those who think they deserve what they think belongs to them. The tree that stood was older than time and marked the love of a country. A country that is now being torn apart by greed. It was a living thing it was not a flag that marked ownership you moron. Yours regretably Bronson.

  • Love this :-) Cheers.

  • Amazing live version of the song; thanks for posting!

  • can i just say, as someone who lives in NZ and is a huge U2 fan, you have created not only a treat for the ears but the eyes aswell. LOVE the visuals you have included aswell. Top Notch!!!

  • I'd sell everybody's grandmothers just to have been there...

  • Amazing. Yes.

  • One of the cheering voices you hear is mine. I was there that night. My first U2 concert.

  • @MrAedoh So jealous!

  • absolutely love this song, and never heard this particular live performance. Thanks very much :-)

  • a hidden gem on Joshua Tree...and an absolute jawdropping live version. Thank you.

  • @bonox, you said that beautifully :)

  • Suu....weeeeeetttttt...doesn't get better than this, if there is, I don't wanna know about it...

  • can anyone write the lyrics for the added part ?

  • I get chills to this day hearing Edge hitting the solo.

  • Superbe tout simplement

  • I have to agree... best version of this song! I still get chills hearing it. (Great sound quality, thank you to "TheGreatGizzo" for sharing!)

  • They did play on the 360 tour: in Chicago on July 5, 2011 on 360 tour. It was the unplanned closer. BEAUTIFUL.

  • yep, Bono lost his voice very young..... not even 30........ pitty

  • @fucksake7 He never 'lost his voice'...

  • @HolaDeco Yes he did, he had to swap a powerful deep throat style for a nasal singing style.

  • @fucksake7 If he 'lost' his voice, his singing career would have ended in 1989, put it that way

  • @HolaDeco I agree with you... but sounds different. Now he's singing live much better than at the Achtung baby tour, he has improved the new technique, I still like it but not my favourite cup of tea anymore.

  • @fucksake7 He consciously (by choice) changed his singing style to a higher register for Achtung Baby and the Zoo TV Tour to be different, it was part of the band's reinvention. He first experienced major, ongoing vocal problems during the recording of Pop.

  • @HolaDeco I don't agree on that one, but anyway.. it doesn't really matters, nice talking to you, take care.

  • @fucksake7 This is what happened. It is in U2 by U2 (book) as well. You take care as well, adios.

  • tobesuretobesure 29 Omagh 29 Pike River More to be more too much more...to follow

  • listen ik turned the moon over to the sun this morning ik ben er nog niet i feel weird ,strange ,i see you again when the stars fall from the sky i guess ik weet je komt niet nu dus dan zie ik je pas in heaven pause i,m,a,friend,

  • listen ik turned the moon over to the sun this morning ik ben er nog niet i feel weird ,strange

  • amazing!!!

  • Bono's voice rips the night and Edge's guitar sears my soul. Never heard anything like this before and never will again

  • Edge never overdoes it.

  • WHAT A VOICE!

  • /watch?v=ZIZDM4X8haw

  • Hey Gizzo. I am the happy owner of a mac and it cant open the file. would it be possible to get the Mp3 from you?

  • @djonwayne haha those macs. Sure I can email it to you. Give me a pm with your emal and I'll send it to you.

  • Thanks mate. I really enjoyed that version.

  • Is there someone who knows if there is an Mp3 of this version and where to get it?

  • @djonwayne I got this Mp3 from u2start diot com. Its the best U2 fan bootleg site, and U2 doesn't mind people using it, actually they encourage it as long as you don't try to sell the stuff, haha. some of the concerts have been taken off the site since I have downloaded this and others because of copyrights (by the record companies). To search and download all you need to do is sign up with an email, don't worry there is no spam mail.

  • @djonwayne Yes U2start is the best. Great advice from TheGreatGizzo. I'm a very happy subscriber as well - it's free, just set up a user name and you have access to almost every U2 show recording that is in existence. Great friendly fan community as well.

  • Bono and U2. NZ needs you now. Please do a concert in NZ and for Christchurch. Please donate all proceeds and profit to those in the Christchurch region who are going through such difficult times. U2.You are NZers as you have that connection with our country. Our country needs you now.Kia Kaha to those we call Our NZers through out the world at this most tragic of events. There are many bands that come and go through NZ but it seems like U2 truly are NZers/Kiwis.

  • was there they played it in auckland, deaciated the song not only to Greg Carrol but also to the 29 coal miners we lost that week it was orrrrrrsum bro and am very happy that they don't play it to often. Sweet as bro!

  • I love this version!!! :)

  • I LOVE U2....but Bono just can't sing like that anymore.....GREAT version :)

  • I saw the posts about the Maori activists cutting down the tree on the hill. I've seen a picture of Greg Carroll, and frankly, he looks like he could be Maori. Someone educate me...

  • After all these years, goose bumps again. Rest in Peace Greg Carroll

  • THIS IS THE LEGENDARY VOICE

  • I went to the Thursday night concert in Auckland and they played this and dedicated it to the 29 miners killed in Greymouth this week.

An amazing performance by an amazing band!

  • The reason why U2 dont play this so often is that they like this song to remain special as it has a special meaning to them and New Zealand. Gregs death still effects the band and will remain in their hearts.

  • At his their awe inspiring best.

  • God Bless Greg Carroll

  • Agree Agree Bono's voice amazing!!!!! they all sound amazing!!!!Wish they would play this song on the 360 tour!!!!U2 FOREVER!!!!!

  • @onewithu2

    They will.

  • @onewithu2 I SO AGREE! Let's start a petition.....

  • @onewithu2 your wish was granted.

  • @onewithu2 they only play this song in new zealand its pretty kool everyone in the crowd release red ballons

  • I agree, this is the best version. This performance is perfect.

  • does anyone know the words bono is singing during his solo near the end?

  • @Siazo10 It's improvised. Not a snippet or anything like that, you'll be surprised to know. It's something like this: Where's the baby love Your love is a deception... Bittersweet love [unclear] ...for to change...the heart, my heart, my heart Whoa somebody...to entertain you! [?] Whoa somebody, whoa somebody (repeated) [This could possibly be Gaelic?] Whoa... Now yes she is...
  • This video seems very vervatim to the song lyrics. Like one of those kareoke videos that show the lyrics. Great version of this great song though!

  • thanks for the post....great mix of pictures to this beautiful and meaningfull song

  • One of their best ever live shows, the version of streets is just mindblowing, you can download this concert, 27 12 1989 Point Depot, at U2 Start.com. they have every concert from Boy to 360, i have now near cd quality copies of all the concerts ive been to plus loads of concerts spanning 30 years, a must for all U2 fans!!!!

  • @magsieboy As a serious U2 fan I'm glad this stuff is on youtube but as far as downloading everything in existence I start to wonder when its considered kosher & when not. I know when we play something someone else put on youtube its not downloading. We'r just watching something already on the web- not selling, filesharing, or distributing it. Out of respect for U2 I just never want to do anything theyd disagree with. If I'm able to purchase I do. Last I bought was JoshuaTree special box set. :)

  • @zenalaus Magsieboy: Of course I realize concert tickets & other purchases can be difficult in this economy, which can be sad for serious U2 fans. I'm one of those who can't just afford to go to a concert whenever I want to. But when I'm able to make a purchase (not often enough) I do. I just always hope that people who can afford to will support our favorite artists' efforts and remember the larger picture. Viva U2! : )

  • @magsieboy I replied earlier to u w/ a comment that starts w/ "As a serious U2 fan...". But after I made that reply I went looking 4 some info on it & found guidance on this stuff that u probably already had. 4 others, this is from u2faqs.com: "During 2001 several...comments were made by the band regarding...recording of their shows...they were fine w/ people recording their performances & trading them...They were opposed 2 people making money from those recordings." But u can't record openly.

  • @magsieboy Ran out of room in the last message to say this so I'll say it here: Thanks for the info! : )

  • I would like dedicate this song to my Grandmother Mary Columba Cassidy. Who passed away 10th Sep 1987 just as this album was playing on my stereo. U2 has been with me ever since. Thank you.

  • @74LittleWing She must have been special. (And what a nice name she had.) : )

  • Hi guys,

I live in New Zealand and this song was written after one of their New Zealand Tour members died in an accident in the 1980s. They dedicated the song to him and only normally play it live when they are in NZ. There have been some exceptions but basically that is why it is not usually heard at their concerts. One Tree Hill is a sacred hill in the middle of Auckland & it is such a special moment when they come back to sing it.

Very very special song to all New Zealanders.

  • @bumbleandprincess Do u by any chance live in the area One Tree Hill or anywhere in or near Auckland? Is it true 'the tree' was cut down by vandals? Whats the deal with that? The article above here (under the video) says it was Maori "protesters." If so what were they protesting? & what exactly did they seem 2 think the tree had 2 do with their protest? Some enlightenment here Please. Help the world to understand. If u yourself dont know, can u please find out & report back to us? Please? :)

  • @zenalaus I live in Auckland. The tree was cut down by Maori activists to draw attention to supposed injustice's, mainly historic, dealt Maori by the New Zealand government. I guess it was targeted because it is a local landmark, and also, being a pine tree, not native. It was also attacked in 1994 on the anniversary of Maori declaration of independence in 1835, before they signed the treaty with England in 1840. The tree was planted around 1870. It still seems weird seeing the hill without it

  • @sleig Thank you so very much for answering my questions. I wonder if those Maori activists would be happy with a type of tree planted there that is native there. I'm sorry to hear if the Maori have any current-day injustices to deal with from the New Zealand government.

  • by far not their best version

  • @guipinsan If isn't their best version, I sure haven't heard the one that is!

  • @guipinsan (Hi guipinsan. Just to correct my typo from a little while ago): If This isnt their best version, I sure havent heard the one that is. Bono's voice is hugely, tremendously extraordinary on this recording. In fact, even though U2 has been my all-time favorite band since 1983 (the War album), when I heard this recording right here on this youtube page, it struck me as Hugely extraordinary: I cannot EVER remember hearing Bonos voice be so incredible! 1 for the history books if u ask me!

  • Fantastic xxx thanks for sharing this..............It became my personal anthem back in 1986 xxxx

  • Bono, Edge, Adam and Larry.

    All 4 at their best.

  • Great guitar solo, total under-estimated little gem.

  • I think I'll never hear this song live, sadly indeed... Its so perfect. I can't get over it!

  • @JoyC666 If the U2360 Tour goes to New Zealand, they will play this song. =D

  • @HolaDeco yes they sure did, I went to the concert last night in Auckland, Bono dedicated this song to Greg Carrol's family who where in the crowd! amazing to be there

  • i've heard a bootleg from new years eve ( actually they started at midnight) same tour, it's just a little more emotional, (if that is even possible) and it's even better than this, i swear bono was not even in his body, just transported to some other realm.

  • S Naylor - I agree, Heartland, a great track, going to tune into it now. I have a tape of this (live at Dublin's Point Depot) and it goes into "Gloria" if I recall right.

  • such a powerful song.. brings a tear to my eye each time I hear it......

  • Damn! Listen to that solo!

  • Thanks to the GreatGizzo!!!!!!!

  • "Raining in my heart"

  • @flevobirdy Ummm, that's Chile. While the Argentinian generals had just had much blood on their hands, Jara's death is down to General Pinochet.

  • jarra sang is on the wheapon!! in the hands of blood !! never forget jarra !!

  • RIP Greg Carroll

  • thank you for findign a live version of my favorite u2 song ever

  • best u2 ever

  • perfect! no words...

  • I agree, superb, and probably best version ever.

I remember sitting by my radio in 1989/90 listing to (and recording) this here in the UK.

    Great show, great memories.

  • @paddy9i99 This is a few days before the new years eve show broadcast all the point depot shows are bootlegged all soundboard recordings.

I rushed home to record that show off the radio also lol i still have the tapes but have it on cd now happy days

  • The Joshua Tree is the best Rock album ever.

  • Best version? You may be right. Beautifully, tightly, powerfully played, and a really top-flight recording (which could use some minor EQ'ing). Dig Edge's solo! One of their best yet underrated songs. I've seen them a half dozen times. Have never seen them do this live. Thanks for this. This is a YouTube post for the ages.

  • that may indeed be the best version of this song Ive heard

  • God Bless Greg Carol and Victor Jarra

  • God bless u Greg!!!

  • God rest your soul Greg Carroll. And god bless New Zealand

  • gran cancion,saludos desde mexico.

  • My favorite of the 4 nights at the Point Depot. Yes, even better than the new years eve show IMO!

  • same here :)

  • I'm no big U2 fan, they often seem a little pompous. But what a great song, great performance.

  • oh my god,,,,the edge is raging in this song,,,,wow

  • BEST EVER ???

    Quite possibly....yes!

    I'm listening again.

    Thanks for posting, GG.

  • Point Depot shows on DVD please - thank you!

  • The best version is the 2005 in Japan. The best voice, best instrumental

  • The depot shows are the best live shows in rock history

  • This is why I scoff at U2 haters haha!

  • I love this song! This is a wonderful video to go with it. I enjoyed reading the history of One Tree Hill. Thanks!

  • In my view, U2's most unheralded masterpieces. A beautiful composition of tempo and lyric. Makes me proud to be a U2 fan...

  • I'm from Auckland, and I well the remember when this song was released in 1988

  • Fantastic song! from a kiwi fan

  • can't understand why they play this so rarely.......easily one of their very best

  • Yeah it beats me. Another one is Heartland. That is one of my favorites songs of all time, but they have never played it live before!!

  • Bono's voice would be destroyed by those powerful high notes!

  • @seannaylor I think the lack of playtime has a lot to do with the meaning of the song - who it's for and the emotional value to Bono.

  • @seannaylor My personal favorite along with Bad. Apparently they are playing it this tour!

  • @18andONEGIANTLOSS Really????????? AWESOME!!!

  • Best out of all the Depot Shows.

THIS,Streets, With Or Without You, Desire, All I Want Is You (played in full), Angel Of Harlem, and even 40 (my favorite version) Are all incredible! I seriously dont understand why this show hasent been released yet.

  • thanks I Love IT!!!!

  • WOW i remember listening to this on the radio new years eve with my mates....the whole show was riotous and emotive and this version is easily the best i ve heard....the end is apocalyptic

  • Holy crap! Great, great version.

  • One of the coolest U2 songs ever... See ya again as the stars fall from the sky...

  • superb lyrics on a U2 song which, incredibly seems to be overlooked! Why?

  • ja vergeet victor jara niet ........ z,n handen afgehakt , omdat ie muziek speelde , waar ,, meneertje,, pinochet niet van hield , rot in de hel pinochet!! u2 never die!!!

  • victor jaro he lies with coin,s in his eyes.

    r.i.p

  • R.I.P. Greg

  • Amazing perfomance, proves that sometimes studio versions ain't the best you can get of a great band

  • The best version, i 'm really amazed with the Edge's solo....

  • Great shots of Victor Jara. Most people overlook the tribute U2 play to him in this song. Look him up if you read this and you'll understand why.

  • one of the best

  • no sight, only sound...I understand so well...pure art

  • Bono's voice is out of this world...he touch my soul

  • Great stuff! I like many others have this concert taped as it went on live radio that night, great to hear it again.

  • i was at this show , pure love u2

  • I'm jealous!! Although I was only around 3 years old at the time, born a little bit too late!

  • by the way...absolutely gorgeous photos here..thanks for posting this.

  • Thanks for the comment :) I felt compelled to post this, its such a great song!

  • @TheGreatGizzo Thanks so much for posting this vid. This is the best live recording I've heard of One Tree. Great slide of photos too. I'm apparently way older than you. I saw U2 kick off thier War tour in Chapel Hill, NC USA back in 1983. They were supposed to start the tour in Virginia but heard of the opportunity to take part in a benifit concert a day earlier at Chapil Hill. Will never forget it. Again, Thanks for the post.

  • I remember this...this song was dedicated to the late Greg Carroll of New Zealand..he was a roadie for U2 and got killed driving Bono's motorcycle in Ireland. he looked after Alli..they buried him ona hill in NZ called "One Tree Hill". Sad, very touching. He was in his late 20's when he passed away.

  • Exceptional

  • Amazing!

  • awesome thank you!!

  • Amen to that!!

  • OMG!!! this version really kicks MANY ASSES!!!
