  • this has always been one of my fave who clips.listened through headphones moons drums sound amazing

  • hey man... where's the drum/guitar explosion???????

  • wtf is the crowd doing?

  • the best and most important song of all time ... most definitely

  • beste live video of My Generation due to a number of reasons

  • as i have said before "british rock at its best" r.i.p keith

  • Ha! The camera focuses more on John than Pete! A rare treat in the '60's!

  • This video clip was shown on the final episode of Shindig! (1/66). But the kids trying to dance are from the British program Ready,Steady,Go!

  • Those are London mods in the audience. I can recognise some them from books/films of the London scene. ( and they are ration-starved - smaller than their US contemporaries. Never reaching optimal nutritional potential. post-war tiny London teens). So it must have been filmed in London and shown in US of A.

  • holy shit they're really young here

  • @kraken589 And beautiful!

  • The Loon with a hi-hat? What?

  • This is my Generation!

  • 0:55 is that an alien?

  • I take it the girl at 1:01 is a big Keith Moon fan! The cameraman really doesn't like Pete that much!

  • 7 people don't got no generation

  • John looks really lazy on this.

    Great vid

  • yes thats me

  • Thank you man.

  • Lol they now have John and Roger as the main focuses. The best!

  • @azmichael34 Especially Roger! My sweet babboo!

  • @azmichael34 Especially my lovely Roger! <3

  • talkiiiiiiinnn ^^

  • I love how John was really loud... you barely hear Pete's guitar and low harmony over his bass and singing lol.

  • Incorrect. The shots of the kids dancing shows that this clip was shown on "Ready,Steady,GO!

  • i love this version, especially the danelec bass from John.

The girl with the big hair looks to me like the spitting image of Julia Stiles from the Bourne Identity films!!

  • one of the few times I've seen him use a hi hat.

  • some of moon's best drumming is here

  • @billheartyface He was an awesome drummer, and one of my main influences

  • Comment removed

  • lol

  • これは貴重!

  • when did they play this?

    1965?

  • you are correct!

  • Minute 0:48 - 0:50 nice girl ass

  • La gente trata de humillarnos

  • The audience weren't actually there for Shindig (it seems that lots of Shindig's British Invasion clips were shot in an empty TV studio in London). The crowd shots are spliced in from an edition of Ready Steady Go.

  • Of course they cut to a shot of people dancing during Entwistle's solo.

  • Man, you forget how good their backing vocals were...John especially sounds great here...

  • aRoger hasn't changed at all, has he? He's 65 and still looks as though it was '65!

  • Like the babe with the Moon Equipt shirt. Not sure she knows it refers to a car parts place though? Maybe she thought it had something to do with Keith? Cool anyway you look at it.

  • oh ya her cleavage was huge...

  • I flashed on the same thing. Very cool.

  • fuck you blaya, grow up

  • my favorite generation!

and im 13 yrs old WHAT

  • I weep for the future !

  • sick puppy...hope you get well soon

  • i must say the later version is better but this isn't too bad either

  • This is from the same episode of Shindig that they performed the infamous Can't Explain.

Hey did anyone see the girl with the MOON Equipped shirt? Moon was addictive....

  • Finally they show john more!

  • Comment removed

  • wow is the chick at 1:06 even a human from earth that is the weirdest and coolest a fucking weirdest hair evar

  • Yeah, baby!!!!

  • at about 0:48 what is that guy doing??? lol

  • This live version was filmed in the summer of '65, along with "I Can't Explain" and "Daddy Rolling Stone". These two clips were shown on the final episode of Shindig in January of '66.

  • aww they didnt show pete enough

  • 1965

  • whhhhhhhhhhat year is this???!??!@?!?!?

  • okay did anyone see that chick go by with the tshirt that said moon equipment and circles over her boobs? LOL Best drummer ever!

    Thanks for posting this

  • Moon Equipment owned by Dan Moon. He made hotrod parts and was famous for "Moon Eyes" hubcaps, almost flat spun aluminum used for aerodynamics for speed record racers (think Bonneville Salt Flats). Of course that girl knew exactly where those "eyes" were. What you missed, however, was the early product placement for Target stores. (A joke. They didn't exist back then).

  • holy crap that was awesome

  • Shindig aired from 1964-1966 so we are in that time frame and whereas most other shows had the groups "lip-synch" to their hits this "live" show had the groups perform "live".

And you get The Who doing this "live".

    nice

  • all dancing is queer.

  • they all look so cute here XD i love this song

  • iwyarmy, you have the full My Generation from this video? I'd love to hear that. This version seems to be cut short. This is a great snippet of The Who in the early days. Sure, My Generation isn't exactly as it is on the record but that's the great thing about spontaneous live performance, even a TV performance, which they loathed, especially if it's mimed. It's not like The Who to play a song the same every time. If you listen to the bootlegs, you'd realize they go where the music takes them.

  • they look so young!!!! love keith drumming!! it rules!!!

    WE ARE THE MODS!!

  • Wow. This was probably before they even recorded it. Daltrey doesn't stutter, and the song has more of an R&B groove than the famous version. Fascinating to see how it developed into the classic we know today.

  • no. they recorded the song in 1965, and this was recorded in 1967, but good observation

  • They recorded the song in 1965 and this performance "was is in 1965". You are both wrong.

  • This live version is from 1965 i'm afraid...

  • los putos amos!! THE BEST!!!

  • Nice beefy bass here...

  • It's a longhorn by Danelectro, the studio version he broke the strings had to use a Fender Jazz Bass, this is how it should have been

  • The Who are a british institution. It's a shame you americans couldn't come up with anything like this at that time apart from motown. Except the beach boys of course. You're not so superior after all!

  • Give me a break. There would have been no rock and roll for the Who to perform if not for Americans who started it all! I loved the Who and all the British invasion groups but don't diss Americans about rock and roll..

  • How do you know bands like The Who wouldn't have existed if America didn't invent rock and roll? This sort of thing was bound to happen at some point. It's called musical progress...

  • I think it was Brian Setzer of the Stray Cats who quipped, "Who was the King of Rock 'n Roll, Angus McPressley?"

  • Sorry, was trying to reply from a guy from a year ago.

  • Sounds Great

  • Danelectro tic-tac bass quite rare!

  • It's called a Longhorn.

  • Great!!! REALY GREAT!!!! Look at that sloppy dancing idiot at 0:50!!! hahahahahahahaha!!!!!!!!

  • this is my favourite version, nice and original

  • I totally agree. Entwistle's solo is better here than in the recorded version.

  • well i have to disagree with that one

  • I personally like it for the twangy Dano sound, but also because it reminds me of the story Entwistle always told about how the solo evolved. Anyway, whether it's this or the recorded version, it's bloody brilliant.

  • LOL!

remember ruining two perfectly good shirts trying to make one like Daltrey's!!

actuly, it didnt turn out tooooo bad :)

    killer version of this ANTHEM!

    Tre

    Liverpool Mods.

  • Listen to this version of "My Generation" and compare it to the version they did at Monterrey Pop in 1967. You will notice how music and the atmosphere radically changed in the space of those 2 years. This is more a left-over of the 1950s early 60s style of bee bop pop rock. The Monterrey version sounds thrashier and more serious.

  • A great song! The Who are awesosme!:D

  • これって65年の何月なん?大分スタジオ盤とちゃうけど

  • Not bad - I guess they had yet to "realize their talent" for smashing their gear night after night.

  • that girl with the big hair in 0:55 and 1:03 looks like a freaking doll!the creepy kind!

  • wonderful ! this is clearly a very early version of the song, in need of the help of a producer to make it a hit record.

Very moving for a fan !

  • they're definately more reserved in this performance but that's understandable since they haven't really gained that much notorieity as of 1965 which didn't give em that much confidance to Townshend to go bashin his guitar at the end of performances.

    The Who=rock gods!

  • That is sweet, never watched this version before, does look like there playing it before they released it! The arrangements seem a bit off,no stuttering etc...! Still cool though!

  • Wow-good upload-thanks! Roger has the "Elvis snarly" face in the beginning! Long live the Who!

  • to everything who thinks different, get it into your thick skulls! THIS IS A MOD SONG!

  • I love this version of My Generation by The Who.

  • The best version Ive seen too!

  • Stop at 1:43 and check out the T-shirt on this babe. MOON EQUIPED...hahaha drummers get all the babes!

  • Correction 1:00

  • I think thats one of the best parts of being a drummer is getting all the babes hahaha lol.

  • Talkin . talking . talkin

    Talking bout my generation

  • And look at that guitar: A Dan Electro, just right for smashing. And not much more.

  • omg - that's not how you dance to the who!!!

    They all look so young.

This is such a buttoned-down version o' the song too

    cheers for the video!

  • Oh look, Keith Moon is doing a promo for Target!!

  • what year was this?

  • 1965

  • 1965

  • This is a version before the album. Really awesome!

  • Keith Moon - best drummer EVER!

  • Is the drummer the guy who wrote My Sharrona? I think he's the same guy in the Ian Whitcomb interview.

  • no! that's Keith Moon, drummer of the Who

  • The group shots were from a U.S. show (Shindig?)1965.

The dancer were from Ready Steady go about eigteen months earlier

  • MICKEY TENNER!!!

  • glad someone got his name right. have you seen other pictures of him in some of the mod books around? Mods! etc

  • Yeah, and he's in a really short sequence of an RSG filming.

  • @williamyontsABC

    Do I know you

    Mickey Tenner

  • Sure looks like they hadn't finished working out the arrangement yet. Still, pretty cool, esp. with Moony at full force. After checking out a few of these '65 vids, it looks like he was starting to lose it a bit even as early as '66 or '67, as far as dexterity goes.

  • i actually didnt like this version but iv got into it more, its funky ;)

  • hey!!did you find out Steve Mariott was on the floor.

on this video, scene time 0:54 and 1:03,on the right

side in the frame, mod boy in cycling shirt and

swing top jacket must be Mariott!!

i was so surprised to find out .

  • Not so sure it was him... very similar hairdo, and DOES look a lot like him. Steve was a short guy, so I don't think it was him. I think that guy was a Shindig regular; saw a couple pics of him before. Shindig's a U.S. show, so I'm not sure why Steve Marriott would be there...

  • Oh, wait... just saw the other post that this was R.S.G., not Shindig. Maybe it was Marriott, then...

  • it was him or not...I'm not really sure.

I saw other boy in CAN'T EXPLAIN clip.

I thought TV show had invited some FACE mod as dancer.

I heard Marriot was FACE one in london scene.

by the way you run a garage band?

    saw your performance video.good performance!

I like it! sorry weird english.i'm not good,

    cos I'm japanese.

  • This footage is from Ready Steady Go in 1965. The Who's first USA TV appearance was on the Smother's Brother's show in 1967. Also at the Monterey Pop Festival of the same year.

  • Right,quink.True.

  • That is not correct about The Who's first TV appearance was on the Smothers Brothers show. Maybe what you are trying to say is that the Smothers Brothers show was the first time that The Who had appeared on American Television while in America.

The Who's first television appearance was on 'Shindig in Dec. '65' when they were shown on footage taken at the Richmond Jazz Festival from London. That was the first time that America ever saw the Who.

  • God SAVE the WHO!!! It just doesn't get ANY BETTER YOU BET!!!I love the backing vocals the drawn out Talkiiiiiiiiiiiing FLIPPING FAB!!!BESTBANDEVER>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>THEWHO!!!!

  • Pete's anger at 0.37 secs is just priceless brilliant real music keith does it as well angry at 1.21 respect roger and pete

  • What?? This is the penultimate punk song. These guys are pissed, high and on TV. Johnny Rotten took this, forgot to brush his teeth and made himself a legend. The Who are the shite, forever and ever.

  • THIS IS MOD BABY! mods were the first people to be high in the drug world, rotton is a cheap wanker. who ruined britains fashion

  • no, - chavs ruined britains fashion

  • Oh man you speak the truth . Why would you take something horrible from the states and make it 6 times as horrible in England . You just gotta live in the states to know about the hip hoppers . I'd amgine it would be pretty scary to see a british one .

  • the who were liked by the mods ,and had mod clothes early on, mods liked them ,but mods listend mainly to american soul music ,they took speed ,purple hearts etc ,not to get wasted but to stay awake and dance at allnighters

  • it was alot of soul music wich back then was cool, but the who were the biggest band to be followed by mods, my dad used to hang around with keith moon in the 60s before he was part of the band, he worked as a dj in a soho nightclub. he walked around with a polo and parka jacket surrounded by mods. the who were a mod band, thats where their music rocketed, they were not punk. rotton=punk and punks=rotton

  • its not punk you total dick head! THE WHO WERE MODS, THEY FOLLOWED THE MOD WORLD, THEY CREATED THE MOD WORLD! it was during the MOD GENERATION wich started in 60s to 70s! then "unfortunatley" the punk era arrived with fucking scabby rotton with his rebellious music and heroin head fans!

  • Nah,they weren't mods - they were just followed by mods. They were an out and out ROCK band who the punks were inspired by.

  • why the fuck did moon wear a shirt with the RAF mod symbol on it in this vid, and why did pete townshend wear a parka right through the mod generation! they were mods! by looking at them, u think they followed punks?! get real mate. punks were cunts, they lived voilent lives, mugging people, no showers and HEROIN!

  • Away and read Before I Get Old or even Pete's Behind Blue Eyes book as both these shoot your "theory" out of the water.

They were also more of a symbol to mods during the fashionable revival of the "mod" during the late 70's/early 80's which was ironic as they had became stadium rock idols way before then!

The Railway Arms in Neasdon is a long way from Charlton Athletic FC or Shea Stadium.

  • this performance is weird.

  • I agree the beginning part is silly glad this developed better two months later in the studio.

  • I love the who, but that performance i did not enjoy.

  • check out the T-shirt at the 1:00 mark.

  • hahahhah did anyone see that hand clap dance!!?? I keep on seeing them do that in all these 60s videos...

  • Yes he was a famous mod-dancer, he belongs to a clap of "aficionados" fans of the who. I knew the name but I can't remember. He have a ape-face.

  • Really think this period of the who is the best young still learning the music side Keith was at his best and the mod clothes are really cool

  • Cool upload - thnx...never saw Roger Daltry 'sneer' singing before...

I think they're better today than then...respect them for surviving 45 years!

  • *funky man

    not funcky

  • Classy performance, love it! Thanks.

  • greatv video i have the whole perfoemance i can't explain, daddy rolling stone and my generation

  • Now our generation is pushing 70 and we still rock!

  • that you do! tons of respect.

  • there did you getthis

  • funcky man.
