I grew to manhood in Wyoming where lethal blizzards would come from nowhere and give you just minutes to reach safety or you would die. I remember this song from my youth. Yes, it's sad, but very, very real.
@padraigog2010 The key I just did it in is C,F,C,G, and there is an A minor for the chorus, then back to G. Basic blues progression, very simple. I play by ear, cannot read music, had this song bagged the first time I tried it. Glad you asked, it just got added to my song list.
@padraigog2010 The key I just did it in is C, F, C, G, and the chorus is A minor and G. I play by ear, cant read music and just bagged it the first time.
Gentleman Jim was a man with a golden voice. He was well liked by both his fans and those he worked with. He sang songs with a story in them, stories of both history and the current times. If there is a choir there in heaven I know that he is singing in it.
I have loved someone that much once. I screwed it up...wish I could tell her. We got a good kid out of it in spite of me. Damn, damn, damn...wish I could tell her...like the guy in the blizzard...I can get close, but not enough.
I know for a FACT that at least one other country legend recorded this song: Mr. Tex Ritter; that said, I have personally been crying, every single time I hear this song by Jim, and I ain't a single bit ashamed of my tears. They simply flow, like the rain when it arrives. (and, I'm still lookin' for a copy of Tex's version !
I've been knocked over ever since I heard this Jim Reeves tune in the late 1950's, and there ain't a single thing in the world that can separate my heartfelt Devastation at this total loss scenario, from the goodness and light that permeates the world. nuff sedd.
One of the few singers that sounds as though every word is coming from his heart. Song like the Blizzard have such sincerity you come to believe it is exactly what he would do, (as ANY good cowboy would). Been a LONG time since I heard it, and it still makes me well up.
You dorks who think 100 yards in a blizzard is a no-brainer have no freakin' idea what you're talking about. You don't KNOW where things are under these circumstances! As for the horse, waaaaay more important to this guy than your dumb-ass car is to you. YOU DON"T LEAVE YOUR HORSE!
In Burl Ives's Version, the guy was 1 mile from Mary Ann when he stopped to rest, and 100 yards from where he was found.... I like Burl's because the guy went a little further.
He may have returned Home to his Father, but he will forever live on in our hearts. Beautiful voice, meaningful lyrics, haunting melodies sung with so much feeling and emotion. You are the best Jim Reeves.... you always will be the best.
May be he thought there might be a total idiot like you in the house and chose to freeze to death instead, cant blame him for that,( its a song , you sad sad person.)
Well I just have to ask, Why freeze to death with the horse when he could just go 100 yards, get some help from the house and go back and get Dan to the barn? Dumb ass cowboys.
Heavens to Murgatroid! This song brings back some wonderful memories. The late great Mr Reeves was one of my mom's favorite singers. This moving song was on one of those albums of his she owned & played thru the years, especially back in the 60's when I was a kid. THANK YOU very much for posting it! He was truly a unique talent. His sudden passing was one of American music's greatest tragedies.
Just pleased to realize that there are so many of you out there that love this man's music as me. I am Nigerian, and my kids think I am too old-fashioned to love this!
Just pleased to realize that there are so many of you out there that love this man's music as me. My kids think I am so old fashioned and so Nigerian to love this!
@nas5532 No, he didn't love the horse more. He was so cold his mind was affected, and he'd been leading the horse for so long he was unable to think clearly enough to realize that he could leave the horse, thaw out, and return for Old Dan.
@absue Old Dan had probably gone as far as he could, whether he returned for him,or not. When a horse goes down,it's usually over in a short time whether it is winter or summer. But what the ~~,it's still a good song.
@crowleysridgegirl Yes, it's a good song, and you are right about the horse. Old Dan was lame and old before the blizzard began, so his chances weren't very good anyway.
If the man in the song had been thinking clearly, he'd have left Dan when he realized the horse wasn't going to make it. He might even have put a bullet in Dan's brain to end his suffering quickly.
My earlier comment was in response to someone saying that he loved the horse more than Mary Anne.
Thank you so much for the upload. Up until recently ITUNES didn't have this track, I broke my vinyl, and was in general fearing I'd never hear this track again :'( . Such wonderful music from when it could actually be called music.
Congratulations on this video! Great choice of photos to accompany Jim's evocative vocal. Mr. Reeves manages to pack an entire TV mini-series into two and a half minutes--one of my all-time favourites from that velvet voice.
Beautifully sung per usual with Reeves, but if I knew I only had a hundred more yards to go in a blizzard, I think I would have found a way to get myself there and maybe my pony as well, with Maryanne's help.
What an awesome song from an awesome singer.....such a smooth velvet voice and a song that paints a picture in the mind.....no one singing on the radio today has a voice like that.....
This song touches me deeply for two reason; one because it is so emotional and beautiful song, two because the son of our neigbour died under those circumstances waling in to a dangerous blizzard in the North of Norway, and was found dead in a hut on the mountain.
Stand up bass, gentle guitar work, settled voice, simple 2 track recorder and soft 60 per min rhythm ...... straight to the soul! Soothing through all ages. Also the song's theme, about a man's total devotion to his horse that has given his all and struggles along.
i have never heard this before and i have heard most if jims recordings, sitting with a wee tear in my eye all i need is a vodka and am set, cheers for this lovely song.xx
One music columnist in the early 1960's described Jim as "an oak among sage grass". There's just something magic about that voice, as Leo Jackson once said.
He said "Was this song from a true story that actually happened that someone wrote a song about it?" I say: Yah, the guy wrote if after he died in "the true" story. Seriously? This was a great ole cowboy song, there were soooooo many.
Today, in my part of Nfld. as I listen to one of the best voices ever in country music we have a BLIZZARD. Jim Reeves, Marty Robbins, Johnny Cash, Hank Williams, George Jones, and Patsy Cline are my favourite c and w singers and there's dozens of others who are terrific as well.
@remsen100 Wow, your 74 years old and you watch Youtube? I don't even think my grandpa knows how to turn on a computer. Dude your pretty freaking cool if your an old man who watches Youtube videos!!!
I like the fact that Harlan Howard wrote this song. Harlan wrote, or helped many of country music's classic songs. It sucks that Jim's career ended before it really took off, and this song is "Gentleman" Jim Reeves at his saddest best. RIP Jim!
reminds me of being a small girl, staying with my grandparents while my mom maryann was sick. Crying in grandpa's arms as this song played. Now Mom is gone and for some strange reason i find comfort in this song.
This song reminds me about the son to hour neigbours, who walked across a wintry mountain to catch the ship on the other side, but he never got there - he died of the cold.
This one of my favorite of Jim,He was only here for a short time just think where he could have gone with his music if he had lived in todays world.I grew up listening to his music.Sugarbear286
My Pawpaw Used to sing this song we called it the meme song our grandmother name is marian . he use to love to play for us we lost him back in feb yesterday my meme passed she truly couldn't live with out him !!!!! they will be missed
Jim was a tallent that no one has ever been able to imitate. He left a void in our music culture. I listened to him all through school, and cried when he died in 1964. Much of his music can still bring a tear. I look forward to seeing him again on the other side.
this is the only video found about the blizzard and a 100 yards from Mary Ann's. thank-you for posting it .

glennhar11 11 months ago
@glennhar11 In a 'blinding snowstorm' even a brilliant wannabe football star, like you, wouldn't be able
to see 100 yards. The closest you ever got to a real football game was at a TV set. Yuk, yuk. Don't ever
blow your nose - you'll lose whatever brain matter is left in there! ROFLMAO!!!!!! Were you born STUPID or
do you have to work at it every day of your life? Want some more??
EarthSteward 11 months ago
In my version of the song - he probably didn't have the foggiest idea of how far
he was from Maryann when he gave out. The lyrics only say, "...it's still a hundred
yards from Maryann" and later, "he was just 100..........".

I like the fact that Harlan Howard wrote this song. Harlan wrote, or helped many of country music's classic songs. It sucks that Jim's career ended before it really took off, and this song is "Gentleman" Jim Reeves at his saddest best. RIP Jim!

Listen to Camera Obscura's version, they are a Scottish band, it was released as their Christmas Song in 2009. Worth listening to.

reminds me of being a small girl, staying with my grandparents while my mom maryann was sick. Crying in grandpa's arms as this song played. Now Mom is gone and for some strange reason i find comfort in this song.

Just fabulous song...
This song reminds me about the son to hour neigbours, who walked across a wintry mountain to catch the ship on the other side, but he never got there - he died of the cold.
And he was a worshipper of Jim Revees

Jim was a tallent that no one has ever been able to imitate. He left a void in our music culture. I listened to him all through school, and cried when he died in 1964. Much of his music can still bring a tear. I look forward to seeing him again on the other side.
