Notice how the kid playing is considered the "cool" kid in the late 80's / early 90's (By style of hair / clothes) and the other kid had the classic nerd look. Nintendo was trying to say, get the game, get the cool friends.

@9GoldenArceus0 You were clearly not alive back then. Graphics were the most important thing about a game from the late 80's through the 90's.

Obviously, the graphics were very simple, but they had to make do with the tools they had. In the NES, a game artist could only have 25 colors onscreen at a time. The whole game had to be under 64KB: music, gameplay, graphics, sound, everything. In comparison, an average banner ad is around 30KB.

So anything that didn't look like shit was amazing.
