Ehhh... I'm not buying the overachiever patronizing. Most crazy cat ladies are below average women, with a long history of pink and blue collar jobs, and are either widows or divorced.
The only way this "overachiever" Elanor could fall into being a destitute crazy cat lady is if she had a long history of falling in love for con men, like Krusty, Troy McClure, or Sideshow Bob. Numerous abortions and an empty bank account could have pushed her over the edge to become a crazy cat lady.
I know this is supposed to be funny. But I find this to be the ultimate allegory for human struggle. You can get all the education, and therefore money in the world, but what good does it do for your mind if you aren't happy?
