the conductor is hilarious :p gotta say. my fav conductor ever so far is Ludovic Merlot. he is so amazing! im playing this with my youth symphony (seattle youth symphony) gonna be fun!
As someone who used to play in a band, I much prefer the conducting style of say James Levine. Doing guesswork on what the conductor is trying to say is not fun at all, and in some parts, Ozawa completely stops keeping time.
Obviously, some people like this style, but to each their own.
The Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra, to me, is one of the most beautiful "things" of Austria. I love how every musician seems to fit perfectly into the orchestra. Their sound is like unreal because it is so warming and moving… But of corse it's real :D. Dvorak is one of my favorite composers and Ozawa is a tremendous conductor. I'd really like to see them live someday but unfortunately. Getting tickets is such a challenge cuz everybody wants them :D And they are out of stock very fast. -.-
Hey..lets make this discussion political .Don't the commies say that the workers do all the work and the bosses just get fat off other peoples labor?..so..can it be said that the conductor plays no role in this piece and takes all the credit? I'm gonna let my hair grow like that when I get old(er)!..gonna get started today growing my hair..and..where's my stick..(baton?).
it is quite remarkable that they tolerate someone of other ethnicity conducting the wiener philarmoniker, such a phenomenon doesn´t take place among the musicians, theres not even women playing in there. how austrian of them.
This is the Vienna Philharmonic?? I think the secret's out...they perform like a first class slavic orchestra. Maybe most of the orchestra is comprised of slavs anyways.
I love this. This is such a great Dance #1........bursting with color, vivacity, joy. WOO HOO!!!
What of it - it's quiet, and the greatest part of this performance is well toned, accurately phrased, and sufficiently intense to indeed (as @saxcock said) match the quality of the George Szell/Cleveland Orchestra rendition.
And it is unusual in having both a good intro and a very good (for video, to watch) aftermath - the audience is so colorful! etc...
This is, of course, a great rendering of a wonderful dance. You can't dispute Vienna and their sound, and of course, their geographic connection to the dance. If you are looking for another version, try Szell and Cleveland. It is the finest Slovanic Dances available. By the way, if I were a flute player, I would be wanting to play the Slavonic Dances, and Carnival Overture. They are made just for the Flute!
I love every single one of Dvorak's Slavonic Dances, but this is my favorite one. The energy, the emotion in this song is great. This is pure classical Rock 'n roll!
This is my first comment about Ozawa's conducting style. The piece was performed beautifully---tempo was a bit slower than usual but not totally off. Strings were in sync throughout. Vienna Phil---top notch orchestra. I hate it that Ozawa is too too grandiose with his style and manner---the oboeist wasn't wrong on the note, he mistook Ozawa's antics for an entrance cue surely. What would HvK and Lenny say if they were here today?
I'm sorry, but skipping the finesse of his style and by-passing the soul of this piece - THE CONDUCTAR HAS AWESOME HAIR!!! =D *wants hair like that when gets to his age*
to have hair like this you have to apprentice with the two top conductors of the 21st century. von Karajan and Bernstein. and become a top conductor yourself. then and only then may you sport a hairdo like this.
This is amazing, I couldn't even imagine the chills I'd get from being at this concert. Seiji Ozawa is such a legend, and the Vienna Phil is so unparalleled!
For any mistakes, if ever any, just accept that this is live and that the performers are human just like you and me. Enjoy the music jabsomdoc...the performance is fantastic!
I disagree. I believe you are mistaking off-timeliness for the acciaccatura that precedes the first chord...I would say that they are quite together, as acciaccaturas have no metrical value.
i find his hair interesting =D

Yes, there is an odd note @ 1:25.
