@FromThe3PointLine It should be able to haul that with a moderate load not fully loaded especially if you were gonna go over a mountain pass or something.
i work for a lawn company and my boss tows a 12 foot trailer with a regular cab longbed 4.2 auto, puts a strain on it since it's an auto, another guy has the same truck but a 5spd and it does a lot better, throw an intake and exhaust on it, that helps a lot
also the dump trailer in the vid, me and a buddy towed one that size in a 3.7 Jeep Liberty auto, strained a lot as well, V6's are able to tow but they'll give out quick from abuse, especially if it's not a V8 derrived engine
@HolyShize backing up a tractor trailor isnt hard at all, it takes forever and the trailer dosent get away from you, just use your mirrors and you will be fine.
@BigZ636 key word in your comment 4.7 v8 this is a 4.2 v-6 (big difference) that has towed this trailer twice now. Yes your 4.7 can probably tow this and pull out stumps in the process but when a 4.2 liter v-6 does what a cummins turbo diesel pulls in terms of pulling I think its more spectacular!
@1972FordF100 ive got the same truck but its xlt and fx4 4x4 with the 4.6 l v8 and the biggest ive pulled is around 12000 lbs of hay up and down a steep incline with no problem it has 4 wheel disc with electric trailer brake controller as well
Tough little motor. One thing I find interesting is the 4.2 towing capacity is like 6,000 lbs. on the modern f150's with an automatic....but the same truck with a manual transmission has a towing capacity of 2,000 lbs......wtf? is ford afraid of people frying their clutches or somthing? lol.....well anyway,,,,any person that tows often will tell you that BRAKES are VERY important....especially in hilly/mountainous areas.
Yeah that is weird I have a coworker that has the same pickup but his is manual and he did burn up his clutch pulling a modular home frame off his ranch property so like you say maybe they do rate them low since some people who drive manuals don't know how to tow with a manual tranny. Brakes are very important fourtnatly for us we don't live in the mountains I think if I had to go to the mountains with this load I would have definitely had the trailer brakes installed. Thanks Kevin!
@1972FordF100 i remember when my ucle when to go buy an f150 very simular to this and he wanted a standard so he could tow they guy told him that all the towing ability is put into the auto trans these days (several years ago) so i guess ford wanted people to tow with autos
Great vid, Richard...and that 4.2 is what I have in the big old heavy 98 Custom van..amazing how it moves that behemoth around..and you're right about that trailer..huge!!! Ford definitely "overbuilds and overengineers" its trucks! Because it knows that they will be called on to perform! :) Jack
nice! BUILT FORD TOUGH! also you really need to upgrade the 72 with front disc's from a 73-79 and then grab the power brakes while your at it, i couldn't imagine 4 wheel drum with no power brakes, you must have to stand on the brakes! nice video Richard, and that V6 is BUILT FORD TOUGH! the truck's suspension seems level! which is good, sometimes you can get the rear end crouching down, can't wait to see the 72 running again in a video!
Very nice Richard! I do remember a time towing a 1941 Packard 160 stretch limo on a tandem axle trailer in the Adirondack Mountain range, and the trailer brakes failed on a long down hill section. It was an adventure stabbing and steering to get the rig slowed down and counter/control the swaying. Fortunately good luck prevailed and the sway was kept in check, and the brakes on my truck were sufficient enough. All the reason why one must make sure the tow vehicle can 'cover'.
my ford escort could do that

Can a dodge ram 1500 with a 4.7 V8 haul that? Or would I need a 5.7L V8?
