I hadn't realised what American healthcare was like until this summer. Have been rabidly defending the NHS ever since. US health care scares me *shudders*.
Of course the NHS isn't free - it's paid for through general taxation, which merely hides the cost from plain sight. The only real winners are those who don't pay any taxes.
Ridicule the idea that it's socialism all you like - that's what it is. I'm sure you can understand the argument from the other side - that it's wrong for some people to pilfer others' bank accounts to fund what they themselves should be providing.
Setting up the NHS didn't require moral courage; only an armed gang.
Im another brit , you present a very reasoned case .
I fractured my neck and was paralysed about 7 years ago they thought for good although I got better , and I had great treatment and no worrys about being scammed by a insurance company .
This was because Im another british person .
all the best another fan of the national health service
In Italy, the Health Service is organized like the British one. I know a person who would always rant against it - until he needed and got a bypass for free.
Taxes are simply money demanded from you by a group of people with guns. They take from one group of people to buy votes from another group in order to remain in power. Recalcitrants are either jailed or shot.
You can try an rationalise it, but putting a sugar coating on it doen't alter the nature of the beast.
The government are rich and powerful - like a warlord - and you're at their mercy. I doesn't matter if you would much rather pay taxes- the alternative is prison or a bullet in the head anyway, so there's no real choice there. Government can be funded through non-coercive means. Most of the things you list can be provided privately. My country doesn't rely on the government for clean water, for instance.
If you really see no difference between a democratically elected govt and an rich and powerful overlord who is accountable to no one, then this is a pointless discussion.
And regarding health care:
If you would rather put your trust in health insurance mega corp that will profit from denying you coverage when you are most vulnerable (and pays it's employees bonuses for doing just that) instead of a democratically elected govt., well...
I am almost 60, and have been experiencing some health issues that at times scare me. I have no insurance. I have given up because I can't afford to be treated. When I have gone to a clinic, it cost hundreds of dollars each time, and I am given a prescription for the first symptom I describe, no one is looking for an overall cause.
All my life I have worked hard: I owned a business, but overhead on same made cost of health insurance prohibitive. Yet, I have paid my taxes so that "poor" people could go to the doctor with a head cold. Most of those "poor" people also get food stamps, housing assistance and other programs..they are younger and healthier than I.
I don't mean to be a whiner, but I have had to revise my opinion of who is actually "poor" in my country.Politicians have their own agendas which keep showering assistance on those who WILL NOT work. Meanwhile, some of us carry the burden without reaping the benefits of our tax dollars.
I think the powers that be are afraid that there won't be enough doctors if their "right" to stockpile as much wealth as possible is infringed upon.:) Also, what would become of the massive health insurance industry if one didn't need to pay huge premiums to get care? Capitalism would crumble I tellz ya!;)
I think you may well be correct. The battered state of Europe just after the war, when socialism was seen as the answer to all problems, was ideal for setting up a health service. Would it happen here in the present prosperity?
God forbid I should need long time care MY family would never recover from the bills.. II have told the wife I don't care how ill i get No doctors!! Damn shame isn't it
IA m American And I couldn't agree more our country is idiotic not to have something similar in place I have seen too many ppl that with some kind of care that may have been able to live a tad longer ... The cost of health care is outrgeous here I dont even go to a doctor because I simply need my money in case my children need to ..
Bravo and thank you. I adore listening to gentlemen, such as yourself, speaking truthfully and earnestly. It is a rarity currently in the United States.
I just had to watch you again. You brought me hope. Plus I love the way you speak. You laid it out so beautifully, I'm going to share this with some friends. Thank you again my new friend
Amazing; you have got to be one of the most intelligent people I have ever heard speak here on youtube... EVER. I had watched Joy's video as well, it was very sad... :( The health care system u explained u have there is VERY similar to that of which we have here in Canada, and I agree, it should be for EVERYONE... take care :)
I busted my leg 5 years ago. Mine was a compound fracture though (out of the skin) I was looked after by a very caring system here in Australia. So far my out of pocket costs have been $0.00. I have spent about 12 week in hospital in the past 5 years. Seen specialists and physio's, and have felt at all time in the best of hands. I even had second opinions at my request. All this covered by our national health care system. It works. It's great... we will never allow it to be dismantled now.
Tenneral, you're so lucky to have the UHS. I'm in the US and it is ludicrous that we do not have a similar system set up this way. I have a medical issue in my family that lack of proper health care is affecting. It's sad but I really wish we lived in another country for this very reason. I hope and pray that this changes here to allow people the quality of life they deserve.
Along with videos like Fringe111's, it's also videos like yours that our leaders and congressmen need to see to show them how much we are truly lacking and behind the times regarding our national healthcare issue.
I currently am in line for a series of preventitive medical treatment which is not covered and cannot afford until a private program kicks in, which with my changing living situation may never happen. My government prefers to wait until I become ill. But still it is better that than live in a country where when the illness sets in there is still no help.
Wow, it sounds as though British health care is better than Canadian, good. We do have healthcare but our monthly fees are high and there is no dental coverage, in addition waits are often long.
I have just subscribed to your videos. You are a very thoughtful person. I am an American. In fact, I am Fringe 111's husband. Yes this country needs a universal health care system, and yes, the idea has been labeled communistic or socialistic by those who now call themselves neo-cons, whatever that means. (To Be Continued)
The second are those who are really born again neo-nazis. In the 1930's there were many fascists in the U.S.A. who, if they had been given the choice, would have entered the war as Hitler's allies. Pearl Harbor threw them for a loop and they scrambled for cover. Prominent among them were Joseph Kennedy, father of JFK, and Prescott Bush, grandfather of the current occupant of the White House.
Neo-cons come in two varieties: The first are the so-called born again christians who believe that everyone who does not subscribe to their world vision (Darwin is the devil, the earth is flat) is going to hell. Oh, and send me your money.
JFK overcame his father's world view. George Bush has embraced his grandfather's fascism. The privatization of Iraq and the denial of health care for children are part of a world view where a few large corporations control and we peasants pay.
Your sincere comments are appreciated. As has often been said, 'the scum rises to the top' - all too often in the political arena. I wish you and your family well at this time.
Living within a society that revolves around a rabid need for greed and individual wealth, and a system of pure capitalism gone mad, I cannot express deeply enough the envy I feel for those of you who live within ALL the other industrialized nations of the world that can enjoy the comfort of knowing your illnesses will be treated without question -- that suffering a great financial loss or even outright bankruptcy is never an issue when you require that most basic human right of medical care.
My mother works in the NHS. It's a great system, the problem is they Service doesnt have nearly enough funding, and yet they keep cutting funds!
The problem is they NHS are portrayed as a money-greedy organisation begging for money, the truth is theyre constantly starved dry. If it was not for that the system would be great.
The only disadvantage of the service is if you never need it, it's a huge lump out of your pocket in taxes. However, I think it's only a minor disadvantage.
Very good video =) will be checking out the one you recommended. I think it's sad how unappreciative many people are of the NHS; if only they were more aware of the kinds of medical cares elsewhere in the world.
Is she okay now?

We have something very similar in Canada.
It is amazing how Americans have been conned into believing that for everyone to have the right to health care is an evil thing.
Shows the power of money in Washington I guess.
Sad.
PFWoody488 2 years ago
Because if I have the right to healthcare, I have the right to force you to pay for it. Refuse, and you go to jail.
Not so pleasant when you give it more than two seconds worth of thought, is it?

Guncriminal:
It's called taxes. It's the price that we pay to live in a civil society.
Here in Canada people are horrified by the prospect of an American type health care system being imposed on us.
I've lived within this system all of my life and it works very well. Up here, if you get sick, you don't go bankrupt.
Also, anyone who decides that public health care is not good enough can buy private insurance if they want.
As for your petty insult, I have put plenty of thought into the issue.

Guncriminal:
Nobody likes paying taxes, but without taxes there is no government at all.
This puts normal people even more at the mercy of the rich and powerful than we already are.
This means no clean water, sewers, roads, schools, fire dept., police, army, court system, etc., etc.
In other words, Somalia.
I'd much rather pay taxes to an elected govt. than pay tribute to a rich warlord.
I think that democracy, despite it's many flaws, works much better than feudalism.

When politicians start shouting about the "dangers of Socialized Medicine" check their pockets for large checks from the medical industry.
The louder they shout, the larger the checks.
