When I first watched this opera, I thought that Don Giovanni and Don Ottavio were gonna have an epic duel or something... haha sort of a Hollywood-esque assumption on my part. But you have to admit, Ottavio doesn't really do much in terms of his "oath"
Why? In my personal opinion, Don Ottavio is so confused and shocked by what has happened that he does not know exactly what to say, is just desperate to calm his fiancee.
Creepy!? I think it's beautiful, comforting... not the way this guy does it... but it's one of the lines that makes me melt... not a big fan of this version, kinda dissapointed, I was first introduced to rene through Thais, where her acting was unreal... this, not so much... my favorite version of this song is the rene jacobs recording...
I have to disagree because I find that Donna Anna must have a heavier type voice, not so much spinto, but with power, such as Carol Vaness or Leontyne Price. It only fits that her lover Don Ottavio have the same type of power in his voice. More on the full Lyric side than spinto, such as Jerry Hadley
I don't know why but I don'l like Groves's voice , we can think that 's too high for him, but when you know that he can sing a top F ( higher octavius) this is not too high for him
I agree that the problem is not in whether or not it's too high for him, but in the way he approaches his upper registers. It just doesn't ring or have the power of the legendary tenors who have set the standard.
I own this DVD and Renee is just PHENOMONAL on it! Paul Groves on the other hand...I agree that he has a "sweet" voice, but his passagio is not consistant due to poor technique. And I don't see why people think he is such a good actor! He just fumble around the stage like an amateur in a high school production.
Paul Groves may not have the most dominant voice...but he is a real presence on stage in terms of his acting abilities. I'd take him over someone who will just park and bark because he brings life to the stage (even in concert opera).
Because I am a tenor lírico-leggero, I think Paul Groves can sing better, but he is a good actor, like Don Ottavio, my favourit carachter of this opera.
Renee is amazing here, as usual! She is truly this generation of opera singers' greatest performer! Does anyone know what production this is from? The Met?

Don Ottavio should have taken a cue from Antoine Dodson at this point in the opera! haha

I always found the line "hai un sposo e padre in me" a little creepy. Fleming is such a gorgeous Donna Anna.

for Mozart, I find Paul Groves much easier to listen to than some of the tenors with more power at the top...

The singing is great (especially on Ms Fleming's part) but this is a bizarre staging. The skull is kind of creepy and unnecessary in my opinion.

I think it adds to the darkness of the opera. As much as Don Giovanni is a comedy it is a tragedy as well.

Unfortunately not a great staging.

What do you mean Groves doesn't have a voice? Of course he does - he's a light lyric tenor, and he's very good!

I LOVE him in Candide. But isn't he really short? Is Renee uber short too?

I'm not sure about Groves, but Renee is a little over 5'6".
