Looking to get into this. Is there a "Rifle Matches for Dummies" book or website. I'd like to start collecting the necessary equipment and gadgets so I'm ready before I register for one. Thanks.
@Blackfork6 Thanks, that does help to an extent. I have extensive shooting experience already. I just didn't know if there was any mechanical way that may be better to operate it or anything like that.
funny as hell when you can here someone hit the flag pole during offhand.It is even louder in the pits. The flagpole is all rusted from being hit hundreds of times,
i have seen a couple of the 03a3s for sale but with 2 groove bores they seem to be cheaper on average , is the 2groove bore alot less accurate than the more standard 4groove barrel ?
@oOCrossroadsOo The glove on your left hand is to protect it from the pressure on the sling. When you "sling up like this" it is rock solid and there is a lot of pressure across the back of your hand.
Properly slung up, proper body position and alignment with the target almost creates a bench rest type of stability.
The prone in these matches is a piece of cake compared to standing.
Yes, the wind and weather at Camp Perry can be a game changer.
its to cushion the rifle a little but more importantly its to immobilize all the muscles in that left hand.
Psychologically you should forget you even have fingers on that hand, that in turn makes you steadier.
This is crucial in the standing, where most of the rifle should rest on the left palm, if you use muscles in that hand you're bound to increase your sway.
i love the m1903 sights! the peep sight is very reliable and true, with great acquisition of targets! because of the peep sight i'd chose it over the Mauser, and even the Lee Enfield. you just gotta love the ol' american rifles!
Any .30 cal stripper will work. Champions Choice a good place. You can use the ones old ammo comes on, but sometimes you have to sort through a bunch to get one you can clean and oil up to make work well. Prying the lips back with case also can help.
@gregstiles21 you can try the cmp for a rifle, but first you have to shoot a cmp match to qualify.go to your local gun club and ask about cmp matches and gun rentals(if you dont have a iron sighted un altered militery rifle of course!)shoot the match, you dont have to win hust demonstrate safe handling of the firearm and at the end they will give you a cirtificate!
i just got a springfld 1903 serial over 1 mil. and its got no clip, i've been looking all over the web for 1903 parts, and cant find any. can u lead me to where i can buy the clips for this weapon?
to guys like you and me those stances are wierd but supposedley its more stable but when your hunting complex stances like that just don't work too well
i tried your way of holding the rifle with the non shooting fully forward hand this morning at a christmas shoot ,very accurate and slightly painful,but it works , 300 mts on a 300 mt fullbore target with a no4 303 lee enfield ,i will definately use it again ,cheers .
Helps with insulation from recoil and makes the sling pressure less painful across the hand. In standing, with an AR many folks end up with their fingertips near the case ejection port. Helps with the heat there as well.

Hey man, tomorrow I am shooting my first match. I will be using a 1903 Springfield. Any tips you can give me that will help with the 1903?
AmericaStandsStrong1 6 months ago
@AmericaStandsStrong1 Use your WORST stripper clip first. Cheekbone smashed to the back of thumb joint. Concentrate on the front sight and trigger.

@idgewe ...yes it is less accurate....still a great gun though
craigalan100 11 months ago
@idgewe I hear they may be worse or better. Mostly depends on the condition. As a rule they don't seem to be any better.
Blackfork6 11 months ago
@idgewe yes....

I don't know anything about such competitions, but why is wearing a glove needed ? I guess it's because your hand might get wet but... ?

Why do you need the gloves on the supporting hand?

i thought this was a Springfield match? The guy standing behind you is shooting a Lee Enfield

How come some of the springfields dont have the flip up rear sight?
RADDxSTEEZY 1 year ago
@RADDxSTEEZY
shooter's preferrance
both of these 1903s are the early model. Its the 1903A3 that has the more modern rear sight.
Sturmmann 1 year ago
@RADDxSTEEZY
my mistake, the left 1903 is an A3 model.
as you can see from the Enfield on the right side....apparently they didnt care much for rifle uniformity
Sturmmann 1 year ago
on this course, is a 9 in the black or is it outside the black in the first white ring?
