For me Carreras is "the ONE," the tenor that pulls me. I LOVE this aria. On youtube there are a few Carreras performances. THIS ONE IS MY FAVORITE! He is comfortable on his high notes, his legato lines are smooth, and his breath long and lush. In addition to an incomparable voice and handsome face - what stage presence. Great art - be it books, or music, or theatre, or cinema should transport you to that world it creates. Carrerars ALWAYS transports me. Whether I see him or just hear him. Cielo
@31122051 é vero caro amico mio che è voce fuori repertorio, però a me in quest'aria ,tra i three tenors, piace tantissimo lui come la canta ed interpreta.... Con grande eleganza e movenze fini, proprio come un vero poeta francese innamorato...... Ciao
Recordings don't tell everything. Quality, size of voice, character, integrity, movement & the effect on an audience need describing too. Have you heard a great performance by this singer live, without a mic? If so please post an objective description to add the wonderful YouTube archive before the memory is lost for ever.
How I wish I could have been there to hear Farinelli entrance an audience with the power of a single note, but we do at least have Charles Burney's marvellous account.
I heard Carreras sing this live in Carnegie Hall a few years later. I can't say that I agree with those who would prefer that he "saved" his voice; as a true artist and interpreter he had something special to contribute! Very different from the great heroic Corelli, he is more introspective and attention to text superior in my opinion. But Gigli later recording is sublime too!
I agree with you completely - I think he's just terrific in these "heavier" roles, even if it did takes some years off his prime voice, what a pity is he hadn't sung this - I think it's just gorgeous!
The passion, the artistry, the diction, the phrasing, the sheer BEAUTY of the voice....I know his voice declined early, and yet Gigli sang this role, and Pagliacci, with an even smaller, more lyric voice and went on and on forever. Technique?
I think so. And your name sake, although fatter, a more slender voice still. I could be wrong, the darkness of Jose's voice can be missleading as to its size. Neither man had much squillo, just pure, honeyed sound.
I see what you mean. But it's difficult to compare across generations and different recording techniques. My Father, who wasn't Tagliavini I hasten to add, heard both Gigli and Carreras live, though Gigli was at the end of his career, and claimed that Carreras forced somewhat in order to produce volume which ultimately let to vocal deterioration. I'm not an expert by any means. As for Tagliavini, my Father's favourite tenor, I agree with you there.
I'd rather he sang beautiful songs such as these with great passion at a cost of losing his voice a bit when hes older to have never singing such great roles with a great passion.
I love him too! Definately the best out of the three tenors
great, Chenier, a role which played part in prematurely ruining his voice, he shouldve stuck to the lyric roles where his voice was so sweetly suited.
Carreras sang this aria beautiful here and at the first 3 tenors concert. Some voices by nature are more delicate than others.they wear more regardless of what they sing.
I think it is that he has a verismo personality and passion, and a beautiful bel canto intrument. He hits those top notes without much protection... like his admitted heroes Tucker and Di Stefano. Emotionally he has this role, but he payed for it in vocal capital. (I love it nonetheless.)
Maybe he shouldn't have singed this role but can somebody sing better?? I think there's only one possible answer. Carreras is in my opinion magnificient.
1979, Carreras sang alot of things that he should'nt have. As a big Carreras fan I wish he had chosen roles a bit more carefully. He sounds glorious here.
Ottima interpretazione!!!non ha la voce per Chenier, ma è un Andrea molto credibile...

Right from his first few notes, one can tell that the technique is dreadfully wrong.

He's fabulous!! Another one for my favorites! This is the chubby Carreras - only so in 1979 -1980, but his voice, so GORGEOUS!

You are right. Ear witness in the theatre is the only real way to compare. I envy your father's experience.
