@ThoughtTraveler the state can do anything it wants to most of the population are mindless idiots who do not think for themselves, believe everything they hear and do everything they are controlled into doing.
Wrong. In the book O'Brien said they had neurologists working on how to suppress these basic drives. They didn't want to achieve this goal by propaganda, but by altering human instincts.
Anyway even if they would not be able to completely control sex, the fear of the big brother would do the remaining job.
Wrong. You CANNOT scientifically all overpower basic Human drives and needs. They are hot wired into our Brains. Neurologists and Psychiatrists STILL in 2010 cannot help people to deal with overeating, killing, overcoming depression, obsessive compulsion, etc etc. How are you going to stop people from "knocking the boots"? The only slightly more powerful drive than sex is eating. Can you program people to stop eating? LOL!
Orwell anticipated what consequences it would have if a party full of maniacs ordered scientists to do research in this domain. Also in theory it's not impossible. You'd have to make body stop producing some hormones and no more libido.
Making people stop eating would be difficult, but possible controlling the correct brain functions. Brain is just a complex machine. If one had enough knowledge of its workings, one could control everything, but I agree that there is a large IF
Cyril Cusack, who plays Mr. Carrington the secret Thought Policeman, also appeared in the movie adaptation of another famous dystopia in English literature —Fahrenheit 451 (as the captain of the Fire Brigade which Montag was assigned to).
@chernobleman I always feel that the extreem left is more interested in the collective; a social class, a community etc. Whilst the right concentrates a lot more on the Individual and his liberties.
I remember that an English Marxist was staying at an exclusive Moscow hotel for foreign dignataries to celebrate the USSR space program. The rockets worked but all the TV's were broken so they couldn't see the launch. Go figure... although the loonie right is just as bad.
The most funniest part about the book was when winston heard the sound of the proles and he thought the proles started revolting at last and when he came closer he saw that they were fighting for a saucepan. That was the most hilarious part. I laughed so loud they told me to get out of my school library. Orwell Great man.
I've just finished reading 1984 the book, it was great! however the part where he was reading goldstein's book was a little tedious after a while.
And I was wondering, what social class do the thought police and the army belong too? they can't be prole because the party want nothing to do with them, but the inner/outter party in total only makes 15% of oceania's population.
They are still working class, they just support the oppressive government.
I was recently vaporized from the Library System in Lakeland, Florida. No due process, no right of appeal, just banned for life because I taught chess to children without asking the parents permission first.
dont fret people ,,,i think soon we will get the change that we need,, provided by nature,,for the planets own good,we cant continue to support the population as it is growing, and our energy needs the way we are consuming fossil fuels , just a thought is all peace to all
The Orwellian "Party' of 1984 could NEVER have such absolute control over humans. People will still find ways of having sex, drinking, and being disobedient. Even the Thought Police could be corrupted and bribed (they are still human after all). You could never have absolute control over people as Orwell described in his novel. Booze, sex and chaos are too attractive to be totally destroyed.
as the guy in jurassic park said "nature always finds a way" you can do whatever you want to the human body and mind but by law you cannout break the human spirit the definition of the human spirit ( at least intuitivley) is something that cannot be broken
The entities which are doing this to us are attacking our mental and physical selves with the utmost tenacity (actually desperation) in order to make up for thier complete inability to attack the "heart".
If that were true, why did people obey leaders like Stalin and Hitler? Why do people flock in large, large masses to religion- which controls the free use of alcohol and sex. There really aren't that may people who want a free will. Many people clearly enjoy being controlled and that's why it happens.
It depends on the locution in describing it. Arguments like yours are a jumping off for a free for all of anarchism, where no government exists. But even, for example, Native American cultures generally have a tribal leadership, i.e. a body of men or women whom have final say on the conduct of the members of its society. Saying people enjoy being controlled is misleading. It would be more appropriate to always make clear that the rights of one person do not supersede the needs of a community.
In a society that could handle it, anarchy isn't a bad thing. Perhaps I'm being pessimistic when I say people enjoy being controlled, most are conditioned to tolerate it.
How would (in a society such as you suggest) justice be dealt? How would goods be distributed? How would crimes be dealt with? What would define a crime? There are a lot of questions to be answered when it concerns human nature, which is as Freud suggested motivated by fear and sex, and burgeons on the random acts of violence which occur in groups where a particular male may seek dominance over a group.
I don't think I have enough room in a YouTube comment to answer all that as I'd want to, but there is no need for law and order in the sense we have now as it would be dictated by communities, no doubt. Our ideals of law don't even fair well now, because we're constantly fighting in court over who's right and who's wrong and sending innocent people to jail and letting guilty people go free. Currently, our system doesn't work. That's why we need a new one, if any "system" at all.
I think creating a set of rules that millions of people must follow is ridiculous, because not everyone agrees. If there are no rules, people will create their own. If people are raised in a world without control, control, control, and good morals and positivity, there won't be a mass threat of murder, rape, theft, etc because people would do positive things because it yields positive results. Right now, people do negative things because of class imbalance- we need to rid these systems.
Rules are there to maintain order. Sure, not everyone wants to follow them, nor do these rules always benefit us (marijuana laws in America), but the majority of rules keep the country, and in a broader sense, the world, in order.
If we abolish rules there would be chaos. People break the rules to be different, but that's marginal and rarely affects the rest of us (running a stop sign when nobody is around).
I think the step towards such a society is a barter system- where people earn what they work for. This is currently not the case. We earn a percentage of money that does not necessarily equal the effort of our work. It creates more of that class imbalance and things like corporate greed. Money, as well, needs to go. I don't necessarily agree with Freud. I think he has some good ideas, but many are Patriarchal and motivated by living in a society that enforces such thought.
*Huff puff* It's hard to say what an anarchist society would be like, as I personally have no example to give you. But what I can say is that our current methods, up to date, have proven to be unsuccessful and create more strife between people and government as time goes on, and thus -something- needs to change. My conclusion is that "something" is less government, as little as possible to none if people are ready for it.
I do agree, however, that the public is "conditioned" as you say. Take, for example the mass fluoridation of public water works. Fluoride is a toxic chemical, one that leads to a host of chronic conditions like memory loss, bone defects, and fatal ones such as cancer. It still continues today despite the scientific proof that it does far more harm than good. People believe the hype that was and is still taught to them about it.
Thats true what you wrote in your comment. Very few people can cope with the burden of free will, they don't know what to do with their lives and use drugs, alchohol or relationships as a crutch. They simply drift through life trying to survive, some are successful in the endeavour, some are not, but what they all have in common is a lack of focus, a reason to exist on a day to day basis.
Only a minority can cope with free will. Such are the Madonna's, Pol Pots and plutocrats of our world.
but if you never give these people the chance to exercise free will from the very beginning when they are children and you don't teach them what rights they were born with and how they must respect others rights, then they will NEVER be free.
And then as you say, they use drugs and lack focus.
Knowing their heritage and being educated and inspired to think for themselves allow them to make more thought-out choices.
Of course, bad government and parents let the next generation down.
The condition is so much like communist China. The civilians would just do everything they were told to do by the government, and didn't have any idea what the gov was up to.
In many ways, it still is now.
The point is that no one can exercise intellectual freedom. It's not like the proles could start their own printing press without getting shot.
9/11 was an inside job. the i.r.s. is illegal overnment mafia. the federal reserve is an inflation and debt scam. corporations are slavery. electronic voting = fixed elections
You conspiracy theorists are a threat to our national stability and security, how do we know your not "home grown" terrorists? Our government is of the people and we are the most free country in the world. The federal reserve is a government institution hence the "FEDERAL." Besides, our government has to make us safer cause of 911, and they should use any means possible. So dont worry everyone, everything is just fine... you can go back to sleep now. Isnt there a new Deal or no Deal on tonight?
So naive...the federal reserve isn't federal. Do some research...it is private! Perosnal income tax is unconstitutional. Do the research. Oh well, guess ignorance is bliss - for a while!
the thought that 9/11 was not an inside job and that al qaeda isn't a group funded and supported by the american and british governments is so retarded to me now.
i don't know what to say really to that except this, who gained from 9/11? who benefited? did the teleban gain? did iraq? did packistan? did iran? did the bush family? did cheney? did haliburton? did blackwater? did the u.s.a. working man gain or loose? is it easier to fight the power as good with less rights?
because of 911 the us gov can more easily control the us population. by saying we are doing this anristd this to protect you from the terrorists, they take away more of our american rights. what for? so that the international bankers can more easily weaken america and globolize the world. why would bush argree to this? they paid for his political party.
umm, do some research. Actually not much is needed at all. It's so obvious. John Edgar Hoover, once head of the FBI stated that if the government created a conspiracy big enough, know one would be able to comprehend it being true. That is so true. People are being brainwashed.
Oh God, you truthers, usually the government to you guys is an over grown institution with collective I.Q. of a brick, accept when it comes to conspiracies. Then their diabolical masterminds that can coordinate a massive conspiracy with hundreds if not thousands of individuals, are you kidding Me. Watch the movie if you don't get the irony here or better yet read about the soviet union or any other government run things. Governments can't keep secrets any more than provide souly for their people
You're right, the government struggles to keep secrets, but the population is generally so brain-washed from the mass media and have lost the ability to think intelligently and without influence from other sources that America (and this world) is further sliding into tyranny. History repeats and is currently doing so. Obama and his henchmen are burying this country the same way Hitler destroyed Germany. Stop being sheep led to the slaughter. Obama is going to take us into a huge war.
Yes obama and the others like him are just looking for power. Who do You think allowed 9/11 to happen, Clinton of course. How many people on here know that president clinton had a chance to bring osama bin laden to justice for the 1993 WTC attacks in 1996 and clinton didn't? Clinton, obama they are all cut from the same cloth and they are using 9/11 to gain the socialist nannies state that all dempcrats and liberals want. They knew they didn't have to be behind it, just allowing it was enough.
And what I want to say, is that I don´t want to judge ower your lifestyle, If you think, it makes you happy, then it´s ok. The Bible tells something different, but it´s not my job to judge ower you.
It's funny it's movies like this that get Me so pissed off at LIEberals in this Country because of their want to have an oligarchy like this in Our Nation.
Well, not only in America, but I think in the whole world, like one world government. And what really pisses me off, is that they don´t look at me or you like a human being, but more like a group of animals, whitch they can own and control. Maybe in the the religion part I don´t agree with you, but in this fact sure.
Oh I agree, Maybe I should elaborate I a bit of a psudo-libratarian Conservative and am against really any large authoritarian control. LIEberals and the so-called Neoconservatives make Me sick to My fucking stomach.
And how do you know, that church is holding back the cures for the deseases? And tell me something: do you think, the children who grow up without mother or father are happy? Will you be happy, when you are 80 and have no family? Because its all about this, to live a healthy, happy life. But it seems, you only live for joy, not for the soul at all.
The reason I know that the christian church is America's big brother and they are withholding, cures, medicines and inventions, because it matchs their M.O., because unlike most I am a student of History and I remember all I learned about the dark ages and the spanish inquisition. I am a child that grew up without a father and I feel fortunate. Why shouldn't We live for joy, I am living a happy life and a Free Life.
What the fuck are they trying to say with this movie that Marriage represents a form of Freedom. One Word - BULLSHIT. Marriage is the ultimate in individual opression and human property ownership and it was all cooked up by Dun dun dun dun the religious establishment.
Wow, what an impoverished mind you are. Marriage and the family are the very basis of freedom. They are the precondition to a political society. Read some Aristotle. It's your very views of individuation that lead to a bigger and bigger state and to society you see on the screen above.
The more I read this the more impoverished in know your mind is. Huh marriage is truely like a coffin and family is the nails of that coffin. If Aristotle said other wise then his ignorance speaks louder than your's. You say that Individualization leads to the same state as is seen in 1984. I feel more sorry for you than anything. Individuality is individuality, and marriage and family are true slavery. I will hope that you ignorance doesn't spread to other susceptible minds.
What are you talking about? Marriage is a holy thing! It's indeed not a form of freedom, it don't means sexual freedom, but in a marriage your person, your soul is free! It's essential to raise children! Do you think it's better to have every day a nother sexpartner and get sexual deseases? To have a sexual desease is the biggest shame ever, beacuse it shows how much fornication you did! And a wife and his husband LOVE EACHOTHER!!!!!
Oh that is a religious bullshit, yeah ask yourself why haven't those sexually transmitted disease been cured yet. I'll tell you, the christian church is big brother of the West and they are holding down the cures to keep you thinking that load of shit you believe. Tell Me is it freedom when your wife Forces you to agree with Her by withholding sex and you can't do anything but agree because your bound to her, is it Freedom?
First of all, I am a woman. But ok, I understand what you want to say. In a normal, loving marriage why would a wife withholding sex? I would never withholding sex, just because there are some issues, people have to talk about problems! And if a wife just don`t want to have sex for no reason, then she is really mean. It`s a thing between two people, because two people are married. If she`s doing things like that, she`s not worthy to get married in a church.
It's not just the withholding of sex, when you are attached to another human being in a binding relationship you are bound to their decisions and their beliefs and their will. there is nothing about individuality in marriage. I mean watch bridezillas for a couple of hours and I'm sure anyone in here will be able to relate to what I'm saying.
the only problem is that all of the narration in the book has to be shown instead of thought, thus leaving out a lot of things that were important. Still, great movie
no - It's about people being so terrified of the state they start to think that their very thoughts are being policed. 1984 is about genuine oppression, not a government trying to ease racial tensions.
PC isn't just about "trying to ease racial tensions" (which is commendable in itself). PC is about the government trying to shape how you can think and speak about an issue. It's very "Orwellian". At least where I'm from, anyway. PC is an accross-the-board attack on freedom of thought and speech.
Guantanamo Bay, the never ending war for oil in the middle east, the constant lying, 180 degree turns in diplomacy and spin on economic statistics, constant surveillance and a secret police - these are signs of an Orwellian regime. Holding back on making making racist jokes isn't. It's not that I'm accusing you of being a racist, but I've met people who go on about PC all the time who clearly are. Just be aware that if you go on about PC people are going to jump to some conclusions you know...
You're right, I'm NOT a racist. I can appreciate your point. However, the fact that someone would jump to the conclusion and assume that someone is a 'racist' simply because they reject 'political correctness' shows how far political correctness has imposed a paradigm on the population of Western countries.
Just for the record, I'm not sure what PC is like in the UK, but here in Canada "political correctness" governs much, much more than race-relations.
I think it's the same for many countries. The typical thing people say is "It's political correctness gone mad"
There's a popular sitcom here called Peep Show - and there's one episode in particular where it pokes fun at racists, and the guy keeps linking his views with 1984, shouting 'you bloody thought police!' when someone argues with him on the Nazis. It seems the far-right is always trying to hijack serious discussions so talking about some subjects intelligently becomes impossible.
I'm not a racist, I'm a realist. Black areas of cities are dangerous, white ones are not, black music is violent and racist, white is not. Blacks are hung up on race, whites are not. Muslims want to destroy the world, whites don't. But Turks make the BEST gyros. My black mates agree with me, and I like Obama. Bye!

wow..have you seriously lost your mid..whites blew up the Oklahoma city buildings white people came to America and stole the land of millions of the native Americans and then killed them the had the nerve to name a holiday thanksgiving after the affair, white people rape and destroy the history of Africa ad they are still recovering till this day while white people are still receiving the benefits.. white people are a cancer to society..and white ppl what about Hitler with the jews..
Any other color of people would have done the same if they had the means. There are good people and bad people everywhere, the amount of melanin naturally produced by your skin has nothing to do with it.
Can someone please explain what the scene at 8:13 is about, with the dead lady being covered in rats? I have a test on this book tomorrow. Thanks in advance!
I'd guess it's his mother or something from the nuclear war and has something to do with Winston's phobia of rats. You could say that's your personal interpretation.
xXArawanXx: Although some Nazi Party members were fascinated by the occult, the Reich supported and was supported by mainline, socially conservative Protestantism. On the belt-buckle of Wermacht troops were inscribed the words,'Got mit uns.' Literally translated,'God is/be with us.' That being said, religion was indeed outlawed by communism/socialism,especially in the USSR. Yes,Orwell is criticising communism. However, his message is deeper than that: Human lust for power is the chief problem.
The novel is a beautiful metaphor.I disagree, I think Winston is a brilliant Character. Though in the book you are privilege to more of his thoughts and become more intimate with his character. You actually feel for him. I have to say, after reading one of the last torture scenes when O'brien showed him the mirror. I lost it because Winston did. It was like watching a friend get tortured. :(
Its quite funny how all you people who try to appear scholars and academics don't seem to realise how much this book has been criticised for poor characters- without thought or development and a very flawed plot. The allusions in this book hold much more meaning than the actual writing- described as clumsy and poor at some points.
Yes! It is not as if Orwell is heralded today as one of the paradgims of style. I look to you as being the very person you criticize, thinking that becuase some amorphous mass of critics decide that orwell's writing is shoddy, you are so wise for bringing their opinion to us. Oh we bow before your ability to use wikipedia.
Lets see. Dystopia were education and memory has been all but eradicated. Media, children, war, and even the economy is draining the life out of the people. So its kind of hard to see how the people can really develop character when they have nothing to fall back on.

I totally agree dude, everyone who reads this book is a total assshole afterwards, and they think theyre so intellingent. And that they think they have some diffrent perspective on the world, theyre a rebel of sorts sent out to judge all the countries, FUCK george orwell.
the proles are treated differently from the Party politicals because they are dumb. The Party does not consider them a threat, the proles' attention is diverted to other problems
Think of them as the people who text in class, have fights over trivialities or follow the activities of Paris Hilton.
Can they find Iraq on a map? No, and they don't care. These are the proles and there are multitudes of them.
In Oceania they are kept stupid, in the U.S. their stupidity is usually their own fault.
In 1984 they are treated more "freely" because the party has nothing to fear from them. The proles simply do not realize that their life could be better and don't revolt.
To the Location of 1984. oceania is The Amricas (North and South), The U.K. and Austrlia. Eruaisa is the rest of Europe and half of Aisa. Eastaisa the most Eastern part of Aisa and Africa. But Winston Simth Lives in London
this is a warning, why do we not see what is going on in the world!do we not want to,is just to easy yo turn a blind eye.we must stand up and say we will not let this happen again!we need to DEMAND that we start useing other fuels and createing new jobs and stop out sourceing our jobs, what type of president gives our jobs to another country!! not a good one!!!we need to take the power back!it is ours,we are we the people.we should not fear our goverment it is they that should fear us!!!
Amen! I think we're going to be too late very soon to save ourselves. If people educated themselves in this country and read books like 1984, Fahrenheit 451, Brave New World, etc we'd have a chance but we're dumbing ourselves down. Look at the US, look at the No Child Left Behind Act!
read the book - it takes place in London. As now, and as when the book was written, in the book England is considered allied with America. There's even a passage as to how the Eurasian forces could easily otherthrow England were it not for the fact it would destabilize the delicate stalemate of perpetual conflict upon which the world's equilibrium is founded.
I wouldn't say 1984 was likely to happen in Britain but since the finicial crisis is worsening it is possible we could have a repeat of 1929 and the wall street crash.
In that case desperate times provide power vacuums which are often filled by radicals, which is why this country must not be allowed to slide even further into recession!!

The financial crisis is staged and controlled.
Hitler and Stalin were enabled into power by England and corrupt business elements of the United States.
True grassroots fascism and national socialism is a myth. The so-called 'radicals' that the public perceives as such (like Hitler, Stalin, Pol Pot, Mao Tse Tung) were actually put into power by the same global corporate elite that still run things today.
Anthony Sutton explains this quite succinctly in his books.
The soundtrack on the DVD version of this film is all wrong...even though I think the Director himself may disagree, I truly believe that the Eurythmics soundtrack works better at conveying the nightmarishly surreal atmosphere that Winston lived in.
That's why I gave away my DVD & burned one from Cinemax (still widescreen) with the Eurythmics track (which, BTW, was the one that many had gotten used to since it was on the old VHS release).
Not worth it. The proles were already docile and posed no threat of rebellion.
Realistically, though, despite what O'Brien will later say, this system is ultimately doomed to collapse. The pursuit of power and control for their own sakes is as corrupting as any other end, and throughout the book there are signs that the Party is far more corrupt than its public image suggests.
I'd say North Korea is the best example of 1984 IRL, and as we can see even its hold on power is weakening.
the point of socialism is that the working class/proletariat (all wage earners: factory workers, engineers, teachers, artists, doctors, soldiers, ect.), collectively, are the most powerful group in the world, and should be in charge of the means of production, because they do all the work.
so many people find this movie to be aginst communism or socialism. not saying that they're wroung, iam not going to even try to guest what george orwell truley ment. it is more of a break through to find out what the true meaning is when you do it by yourself, and not told by someone.
It's against the Stalinist system and the abuse of those socialist principles by the Soviet Union and its puppet states in Eastern Europe, and his concern over the potential for totalitarianism in Britain following WWII.
yea, thats great, you understand it, but there are other ways of enterperating it, personaly thats what i think too. like i said its about what you get fron understanding it.

Some rules are necessary to ensure the inalienable rights we have inherently.
Others are not, some are just legal plunder. People have inherent rights to life, freedom of speech and expression and to own property.
I don't care if people have free will or not, and regardless, it is not your business to tell me what to think or do.

BrownDavidson 2 years ago 2
as the guy in jurassic park said "nature always finds a way" you can do whatever you want to the human body and mind but by law you cannout break the human spirit the definition of the human spirit ( at least intuitivley) is something that cannot be broken
The entities which are doing this to us are attacking our mental and physical selves with the utmost tenacity (actually desperation) in order to make up for thier complete inability to attack the "heart".
teched246 2 years ago
If that were true, why did people obey leaders like Stalin and Hitler? Why do people flock in large, large masses to religion- which controls the free use of alcohol and sex. There really aren't that may people who want a free will. Many people clearly enjoy being controlled and that's why it happens.
Arazante 2 years ago
It depends on the locution in describing it. Arguments like yours are a jumping off for a free for all of anarchism, where no government exists. But even, for example, Native American cultures generally have a tribal leadership, i.e. a body of men or women whom have final say on the conduct of the members of its society. Saying people enjoy being controlled is misleading. It would be more appropriate to always make clear that the rights of one person do not supersede the needs of a community.
chopin65 2 years ago
In a society that could handle it, anarchy isn't a bad thing. Perhaps I'm being pessimistic when I say people enjoy being controlled, most are conditioned to tolerate it.
Arazante 2 years ago
How would (in a society such as you suggest) justice be dealt? How would goods be distributed? How would crimes be dealt with? What would define a crime? There are a lot of questions to be answered when it concerns human nature, which is as Freud suggested motivated by fear and sex, and burgeons on the random acts of violence which occur in groups where a particular male may seek dominance over a group.
chopin65 2 years ago
I don't think I have enough room in a YouTube comment to answer all that as I'd want to, but there is no need for law and order in the sense we have now as it would be dictated by communities, no doubt. Our ideals of law don't even fair well now, because we're constantly fighting in court over who's right and who's wrong and sending innocent people to jail and letting guilty people go free. Currently, our system doesn't work. That's why we need a new one, if any "system" at all.
Arazante 2 years ago
I think creating a set of rules that millions of people must follow is ridiculous, because not everyone agrees. If there are no rules, people will create their own. If people are raised in a world without control, control, control, and good morals and positivity, there won't be a mass threat of murder, rape, theft, etc because people would do positive things because it yields positive results. Right now, people do negative things because of class imbalance- we need to rid these systems.
Arazante 2 years ago
Rules are there to maintain order. Sure, not everyone wants to follow them, nor do these rules always benefit us (marijuana laws in America), but the majority of rules keep the country, and in a broader sense, the world, in order.
If we abolish rules there would be chaos. People break the rules to be different, but that's marginal and rarely affects the rest of us (running a stop sign when nobody is around).
Renyen 2 years ago
I think the step towards such a society is a barter system- where people earn what they work for. This is currently not the case. We earn a percentage of money that does not necessarily equal the effort of our work. It creates more of that class imbalance and things like corporate greed. Money, as well, needs to go. I don't necessarily agree with Freud. I think he has some good ideas, but many are Patriarchal and motivated by living in a society that enforces such thought.
Arazante 2 years ago
*Huff puff* It's hard to say what an anarchist society would be like, as I personally have no example to give you. But what I can say is that our current methods, up to date, have proven to be unsuccessful and create more strife between people and government as time goes on, and thus -something- needs to change. My conclusion is that "something" is less government, as little as possible to none if people are ready for it.
Arazante 2 years ago
I do agree, however, that the public is "conditioned" as you say. Take, for example the mass fluoridation of public water works. Fluoride is a toxic chemical, one that leads to a host of chronic conditions like memory loss, bone defects, and fatal ones such as cancer. It still continues today despite the scientific proof that it does far more harm than good. People believe the hype that was and is still taught to them about it.
chopin65 2 years ago
Thats true what you wrote in your comment. Very few people can cope with the burden of free will, they don't know what to do with their lives and use drugs, alchohol or relationships as a crutch. They simply drift through life trying to survive, some are successful in the endeavour, some are not, but what they all have in common is a lack of focus, a reason to exist on a day to day basis.
Only a minority can cope with free will. Such are the Madonna's, Pol Pots and plutocrats of our world.
123Fidelio 2 years ago
but if you never give these people the chance to exercise free will from the very beginning when they are children and you don't teach them what rights they were born with and how they must respect others rights, then they will NEVER be free.
And then as you say, they use drugs and lack focus.
Knowing their heritage and being educated and inspired to think for themselves allow them to make more thought-out choices.
Of course, bad government and parents let the next generation down.

The point is that no one can exercise intellectual freedom. It's not like the proles could start their own printing press without getting shot.

Our government is of the people and we are the most free country in the world. The federal reserve is a government institution hence the "FEDERAL." Besides, our government has to make us safer cause of 911, and they should use any means possible. So dont worry everyone, everything is just fine... you can go back to sleep now. Isnt there a new Deal or no Deal on tonight?

arasta9999 2 years ago
umm, do some research. Actually not much is needed at all. It's so obvious. John Edgar Hoover, once head of the FBI stated that if the government created a conspiracy big enough, know one would be able to comprehend it being true. That is so true. People are being brainwashed.
cabgt 2 years ago
Oh God, you truthers, usually the government to you guys is an over grown institution with collective I.Q. of a brick, accept when it comes to conspiracies. Then their diabolical masterminds that can coordinate a massive conspiracy with hundreds if not thousands of individuals, are you kidding Me. Watch the movie if you don't get the irony here or better yet read about the soviet union or any other government run things. Governments can't keep secrets any more than provide souly for their people
Nightshift10000 2 years ago
You're right, the government struggles to keep secrets, but the population is generally so brain-washed from the mass media and have lost the ability to think intelligently and without influence from other sources that America (and this world) is further sliding into tyranny. History repeats and is currently doing so. Obama and his henchmen are burying this country the same way Hitler destroyed Germany. Stop being sheep led to the slaughter. Obama is going to take us into a huge war.

Clinton, obama they are all cut from the same cloth and they are using 9/11 to gain the socialist nannies state that all dempcrats and liberals want. They knew they didn't have to be behind it, just allowing it was enough.

What the fuck are they trying to say with this movie that Marriage represents a form of Freedom. One Word - BULLSHIT. Marriage is the ultimate in individual opression and human property ownership and it was all cooked up by Dun dun dun dun the religious establishment.
Nightshift10000 2 years ago
Wow, what an impoverished mind you are. Marriage and the family are the very basis of freedom. They are the precondition to a political society. Read some Aristotle. It's your very views of individuation that lead to a bigger and bigger state and to society you see on the screen above.
MarcusCMarcellus 2 years ago
The more I read this the more impoverished in know your mind is. Huh marriage is truely like a coffin and family is the nails of that coffin. If Aristotle said other wise then his ignorance speaks louder than your's. You say that Individualization leads to the same state as is seen in 1984. I feel more sorry for you than anything. Individuality is individuality, and marriage and family are true slavery. I will hope that you ignorance doesn't spread to other susceptible minds.
Nightshift10000 2 years ago
What are you talking about? Marriage is a holy thing! It's indeed not a form of freedom, it don't means sexual freedom, but in a marriage your person, your soul is free! It's essential to raise children! Do you think it's better to have every day a nother sexpartner and get sexual deseases? To have a sexual desease is the biggest shame ever, beacuse it shows how much fornication you did! And a wife and his husband LOVE EACHOTHER!!!!!
csumicica 2 years ago
Oh that is a religious bullshit, yeah ask yourself why haven't those sexually transmitted disease been cured yet. I'll tell you, the christian church is big brother of the West and they are holding down the cures to keep you thinking that load of shit you believe. Tell Me is it freedom when your wife Forces you to agree with Her by withholding sex and you can't do anything but agree because your bound to her, is it Freedom?
Nightshift10000 2 years ago
First of all, I am a woman. But ok, I understand what you want to say. In a normal, loving marriage why would a wife withholding sex? I would never withholding sex, just because there are some issues, people have to talk about problems! And if a wife just don`t want to have sex for no reason, then she is really mean. It`s a thing between two people, because two people are married. If she`s doing things like that, she`s not worthy to get married in a church.
csumicica 2 years ago
It's not just the withholding of sex, when you are attached to another human being in a binding relationship you are bound to their decisions and their beliefs and their will. there is nothing about individuality in marriage. I mean watch bridezillas for a couple of hours and I'm sure anyone in here will be able to relate to what I'm saying.

1:41 - "thought criminal" aka political correctness.
NoJeanNoMoney1 2 years ago 3
no - It's about people being so terrified of the state they start to think that their very thoughts are being policed. 1984 is about genuine oppression, not a government trying to ease racial tensions.
pikmindoctor 2 years ago 2
PC isn't just about "trying to ease racial tensions" (which is commendable in itself). PC is about the government trying to shape how you can think and speak about an issue. It's very "Orwellian". At least where I'm from, anyway. PC is an accross-the-board attack on freedom of thought and speech.
NoJeanNoMoney1 2 years ago 10
Guantanamo Bay, the never ending war for oil in the middle east, the constant lying, 180 degree turns in diplomacy and spin on economic statistics, constant surveillance and a secret police - these are signs of an Orwellian regime. Holding back on making making racist jokes isn't. It's not that I'm accusing you of being a racist, but I've met people who go on about PC all the time who clearly are. Just be aware that if you go on about PC people are going to jump to some conclusions you know...
pikmindoctor 2 years ago
You're right, I'm NOT a racist. I can appreciate your point. However, the fact that someone would jump to the conclusion and assume that someone is a 'racist' simply because they reject 'political correctness' shows how far political correctness has imposed a paradigm on the population of Western countries.
Just for the record, I'm not sure what PC is like in the UK, but here in Canada "political correctness" governs much, much more than race-relations.
NoJeanNoMoney1 2 years ago 8
I think it's the same for many countries. The typical thing people say is "It's political correctness gone mad"
There's a popular sitcom here called Peep Show - and there's one episode in particular where it pokes fun at racists, and the guy keeps linking his views with 1984, shouting 'you bloody thought police!' when someone argues with him on the Nazis. It seems the far-right is always trying to hijack serious discussions so talking about some subjects intelligently becomes impossible.
pikmindoctor 2 years ago
I'm not a racist, I'm a realist. Black areas of cities are dangerous, white ones are not, black music is violent and racist, white is not. Blacks are hung up on race, whites are not.

Or at least that's what I see of it.
