  • Hello doc...my name is Kevin and I recently changed doctors,, I have been on suboxone since feb 1st..I have been on opiates for 12 yrs..MY new doc..said he was gonna keep me on 16 mg for 3-4 mos then start dropping me gradually....My question is How does he know if its the right time for me to start weening off after only such a short period of stabilization. I do wanna come off but scared its too early...I'm glad I found you on here...any help would be appreciated...

  • @sillygreenmeep I don't take new patients-- I've been at the 'cap' of 100 patients for over a year. If people are stable I try to see them as infrequently as possible, to save them money. As for 'charging struggling forsaken people', being a doctor is, after all, my job. If someone else will pay my mortgage, my car loan, my health insurance bill, etc, I'll see people for free!

  • im feeling wd form being on my 3mg of sub.I was on 16mg and have been weening. Its a long process and have felt bad everyday for wks and im not even totally of the meds. yet so it is scary..because you wonder if im feeling bad now, how bad is it going to b when im on nothing.Im a mother of an 8yr old w very little help.I dont have time to b layed up in bed for wks.Its so scary.Im gonna do it but its super hard.Everyone hang in there.I wish you all the best.If ur wd on it let me know!Good luck!

  • does sub cause neck swelling?? been on it for 3 years for a neck and back problem and now my neck is so swollen and noone can find out what is wrong PLEASE PLEASE LET ME KNOW.........and im alsogetting off it here soon, and what im reading is freaking me out...........

  • I have been on suboxone about 16 months and I feel that I am nowhere near being ready to come off of it..I am not sure when I will be ready...but where I go they say they will not take you off of it until you are ready..my question is- what is the big deal if you were on it your whole life? I feel that being on it the rest of my life would be far better than going back out there to pain pills and lying and cheating my family..I am scared to come off of it..I feel maybe its a safety net for me...

  • he is legally allowed to. Why do we have to go to meetings? because we can't afford actual therapy. So we do things that some crack head that has been off the sauce for 3 months is telling us to do because their judgement is probably better than your own. When is someone actually going to reach out and do something about this? We need REAL help and compassion. But you've "been there" in your fancy rehab. So, I'm sure you know about struggling.

  • @sillygreenmeep Wow, sillygreen-- you have loads of anger. You know nothing about what I have gone through. You spew insults, and then ask for 'real help and compassion'. I think you will learn that at some point people tend to get the help that they deserve. Most of my patients do well because they can accept their own role in things, and be grateful for the help of others. They could teach you some things.

  • It sounds like you are really knowledgeable on the subject. Too bad anyone who is considering soboxone or going off of it is most likely broke and can't afford to order some tape telling them how to handle their situation and don't have insurance so they can't see a doctor or go to rehab. The reason people could pay for a 40 mg oxy was because they were blowing some pedi on the street corner or pawning their sisters laptop.

  • owwwwwwwwwwwww......this fucking sucks....im day 8 of sub withdrawll...havent slept 1 hour yet...on day 5 i totaed my car cuz i was hallucinating from noit sleeping...i feel just as shitty as day 2,3,4,5,6....i was on about .50mg every day and jumped from there which isnt much at alllllllllll....i was doin dope everyday for 2 years then switched to like 4mg of sub a day and weened it down from 4 to .50 over like 4months....how much longer do you think i wwill be like this?? I neeed sleep BAD

  • what doesa sub do to testosterone levels, insulin, levels, aromatase levels etc? thank you

  • @ods1ODS All opioids reduce testosterone levels-- buprenorphine less than methadone, but they all do to some extent. I have not seen evidence for changes in insulin or other hormone levels from buprenorphine or other opioids.

  • Doc i got off heroin about a year ago and after going thru the whole friggin detox i new i was gonna go back so i finally said screw it and started the subs. been doing good but i have a question. once i got on the subs i started exercising again and here i am a year later and havnt put on as much muscle or lost as much fat as i wouldve liked. what doesa sub do to testosterone levels, insulin, levels, aromatase levels etc? thank you

  • i have been on subs since June 2009. i have been on 2mg for about 4 months, I tried weening and then the first day without suboxone i was crying non stop, also hot and cold and restless leg and unable to sleep. So i continue to take 2 mg im going to try again to ween off and cut the 2 mg in half and then that one in half. If i cant do it my next thing would be rehab and since i dont have insurance i may have to pay for it. I am mostly worried about the emotional withdrawl. any suggestions, thx

  • you are a good person for informing the people about this powerful drug and its misconceptions and facts. You have probably saved some kids' lives who were gonna shoot it up or God knows what !! Personally sub saved my life, coupled with the desire to get better, so i really respect your goal and what you are doing, sir.

    God bless you

  • Thank you for your time doing this for people sir! I have been on suboxone for almost 2 years, and this is my 2nd day coming off. I would purchase your tapes, but I'm so broke I can't even pay attention...I just need something to calm my "misery" and I know I can make it. I just don't want to move when I'm this sick...any ideas?? Thank you again sir, and congrats on your recovery!

  • suboxone is "the tree that hides the forest" I don't know if that expression exists in English, what I mean is that when you're on Subs you're not off drugs.

  • Your tapes are very educating to the people that know nothing or very little about suboxone. I'm currently on suboxone and it has turned my life completely around and it's peolpe like you that make me want to keep going. Keep on with more great videos my friend!!! Have a wonderful day!!

  • Subutex does not have Naltraxone to block opiates. Only meant to make U transfer to Suboxone with no withdrawel. I suggest; File for Medicaid. Get a letter from your Doctor, go to SSI with it, and you can get medicaid. The letter should say how addiction has ruined your life. And He is treating you with Suboxone.Be able to back up with paperwork whatever you tell SSI. Fight as hard for it as you did for your drugs. They consider Suboxone, Drug Treatment, Like methadone.

  • @adnetjm Subutex is primarily used by people with a sensitivity to naloxone, by pregnant women, or by people with severe liver disease who don't break down the naloxone and end up with a bit of withdrawal after each dose. For most people, there is NO difference between Subutex and Suboxone-- they act the same, feel the same, are the same.

  • i just found this, its so cool that you're taking the time to do all that you do! God Bless ya doc! :)

  • hey Doc, were you addicted to opiates at one point in your life, sorry if im being foward, it just seems u have the knowlege of an X user.... again no offence 2 you

  • @ME3RZ11 no offense taken-- yes, I'm just another opioid addict. You can read the dramatic version by searching for 'mens health' and 'junig' and 'the junkie in the OR'.

  • Hey SuboxDoc. I dont quite know what to think about what my doctor has done. He immediatly cut me off of 24mgs suboxone because I wasnt informed about an appointment they made for me so i missed it. They stopped me after 1 1/2 years. Im 12 days into withdrawals and its been complete hell. If you have any suggestions for me they would be much appreciated.

  • i live in NJ and each suboxone 8mg tab cost me 9$ each, are you sure about a generic that cost so much less

  • The generic is actually generic Subutex-- which is plain buprenorphine. Suboxone is buprenorphine plus the opiate blocker naloxone, which has no activity when taken properly and is only present to prevent injecting the buprenorphine. The generic is called 'buprenorphine oral dissolvable tablet' from Roxane Pharma, and Walgreens orders it in Wisconsin for $2.50 per 8 mg tablet. Some docs THINK it is easier to abuse, but they are wrong-- except for people who inject Suboxone (which is dumb!)

  • Hi I live in new York state and have recently been put on a free suboxone program because I dont make over a certain amount of money per year im not sure if this is in new jersey too but all I have to do is pay my doctor visit and he gets bottles shipped right to his office and gives them to me no cost for the subs. Ask your doc about this.

  • i have been on suboxone since july 09 and hsve also started the tapering process. i am down to 12mgs per day right now and have notied slight symptoms. tired mainly, but nothing compared to what i experienced trying to stop cold turkey. i go to op treatment with several other sub patients and i get mixed responses as to what to expect further down the process. i think alot of what you experience has to do with motivation and willpower. of course nothing is 100% hunky dory, but suboxone helps.

  • Wow-- tough work! Good job, and good luck!

  • i have been on subs for like 8 months and contrary to what my doctor says i have built a considerable tolerence to the medication. It just doesnt work at all well and i seem to start feeling withdrawl with my regular dose which is right now 8 mg. I was wondering if anyone else has had similar problems. This is also a problem because i want to get off and it seems like it will be 10 times harder than it would have been 5 months ago.

  • I am kind of confused as to what the difference between suboxone & buprenorphine is. Can I substitute the buprenorphine for the suboxone and have the same effect as far has helping with my opiate addiction? As well as save a little bit of $?? Suboxone is ridiculously expensive in FL. Around $8.00 (1) 8mg pill.

  • Buprenorphine is the active ingredient in Suboxone and also in Subutex. Subutex is ONLY bupe; Suboxone also has naloxone, an opiate blocker that will induce withdrawal if injected. When taken as directed, there is no difference in what they do-- take generic bupe for $2-$3 per 8 mg pill! It works exactly the same way.

  • remeber buprenorphine is normally given in micrograms yet we take 24mgs at time

it is insane if you taper from1mg to .90micrograms and so one there will be no withdrawl.

  • i have been on 8mgs for all most 2 years and i have never relapsed i think suboxone is the best thing i don`t even think about nothing else but the price were i live at the methadone clinic is getting out of control and you can`t find a doc. to get on a waiting list so this is all i have for within a 50mile span but it started out like 14.00$ a day then it went up to 17.00$ and now it`s 23.00 and 30.00 i think it`s the clinic check them out it`s the CRC in Tazwell county Va.

  • suboxone costs 600.00$ a month in Va.

  • That is ridiculous-- any large pharmacy (Walgreens, CVS) can order generic buprenorphine now-- Walgreens sells it for $2.55 for the 8 mg tablet. One month of 8 mg per day costs about $75-- and there are cheaper pharmacies than Walgreens.

  • Ive been on sub 8mg since january 2009. The only withdrawals i got from opiates were horrible muscle spasms and sweats. No throwing up, or insomnia. Just muscle spasms so bad that i couldnt sit still for longer then 30 seconds. I hope when i wean off the suboxone, that if i experience withdrawal the spasms will no longer be there or as severe. That is the only thing im afraid of when stopping the Suboxone, is the severity of the muscle spasms from my withdrawal.

  • Doc i just want said thank u people like u made this world better u awnser every body question and this is going help me alot my i call my doctor He was so mean and never help me he never told me that i had to be on consuling till 3 weeks ago and i was on the treatment 7 months i made to one metting and o dint made it to the 2 metting cuz

I dint had the money that day and he told me to find a diif doctor god bless u

  • good thing i dont do heroin ....ha.....im doing methadone to detox off subs and im done ..i was wondering tho how long will it be before the methadone works effectivley ????

  • It depends on the dose and the person, but in general it takes a few days. My point about the cost though was that EVERYBODY is certain that THEY won't relapse, and yet the relapse rate is almost 100%. Even after intensive residential treatment, for opiates the one yr sobriety rate for people in their 20's is 10-20%! The steps saved my life twice so I respect them, but for opiates, a 10% success rate is simply too low.

  • I had 20 Norco a day habit. I am a member of Kaiser Perm. I started with my GP and asked for Subs. They said they had never heard of it. Another doc in the same clinic said nobody there was able to prescribe it. When I got to CD, they refused to give me subs. saying it was just a band aid. They said CT w meds was the only way (5 days clean). Why was it was so hard to get subs? It seems they fought me tooth and nail at every point. What is your take? Palm Springs, CA

  • I don't know what 'CD' refers to. I do not think it is a band-aid any more than lisinopril is a 'band-aid' for high blood pressure. The focus, in my opinion, shouldn't be on taking a pill; we take pills for many things. Addiction is the love affair with the drug-- THAT is what causes the destruction. And THAT is what bupe eliminates. 'drug for a drug' is a pretty simple way of seeing things that misses the whole point of how addiction works. I don't know why your area is uninformed.

  • Hi Doc, thnx for response. CD meant Chemical Dependency clinic. I begged for SUB but as I said Kaiser Permanente wouldn't give it to me. I wonder if it is a cost issue. At any rate I am 5 days clean (CT). And the worst WD symptoms seem to be over. The WD process has been pure hell as you know. I will begin attending NA this week. I am excited that I am getting my life back. Thanks for your inforrmative posts/videos. G. Palm Springs, CA

  • the best thing is jsut not to stay on subs for that long ..i was on it for a year and that was 2 long i wish i coulda just went 3 months..now im having to do methadone to get off suboxone.........stupid i kknow but i dont have a choice im 19 now and my medicade doesnt pay for my subs any more....so i had to get off

  • I just saw a woman today who 'had to get off Suboxone' because it cost $6 per day... in the three months since stopping it, she has spent over $5000 on heroin. I'm sorry, but only a fool 'saves money' by stopping Suboxone.

    Good luck to you!

  • suboxone is just as coastly as drugs in Va. at a clinic methadone is 13.50 a day and suboxone is 23.00 to 30.00 a day

  • I urge you to look around-- I know people along the east coast who aren't spending anything like that! Generic subutex is now $2.50 per day-- any Walgreens can order it. Once patients are stable I charge $80 per month-- less than $1.50 per day. That comes to less than $4 per day-- without insurance! Most of my patients have that charge reduced even more by insurance-- some pay nothing at all.

  • I am Soldier serving in the US. Army, last november, while on my second deplyoment in Iraq, i was wounded. Thankfully i survived. But affter my injuries i was on some serious pain killers. In June this year i started suboxone therapy, to help me get off my opiate/pain killers. Now I am well, and want to return to active duty in the Army, but i have to get off suboxone first. Any advice how to do it properly and relatively quick ?

    Thanks !

  • I wonder if you know when bupe is going to be avvailable as a generic? The price is the only thing that bugs me about bupe. Great videos, doc.

  • sloooow taper... cutting pills as small as you can... off suboxone for 6 days now.

  • What should I do when my doctor wants to wean me off and I'm not ready too. I really can't afford it anymore but I'm not ready to get off of it. Her solution is to wean. And I've been on a methadone waiting list for about 4 months. It seems like I'll never get on methadone.

  • In my area, methadone is much more expensive than Suboxone-- methadone is about 15 bucks/day, vs 6-10 for Suboxone. More and more doctors are finding that chronic treatment is the most appropriate.

  • thank u for all your wisdom on suboxone sub doc. been on it 8 months and its awesome. got my damn life back thanx to suboxone. works wonderfully. thnx again.

  • Have you seen the suboxone "turn" on peeps? Like making them feel depressed, sluggished, never answering the phone or going out to socialize? I read so much about these symptoms.

  • I don't know how to tell that from the other crap that brings down addicts. We all have character defects that cause depression, isolation, etc-- we have to work on them, with or without Suboxone.

  • I don't know what is causing it or if it will stop-- if I was treating it, though, I would try ropinirole, the med for restless legs, or maybe a low dose of a beta-blocker (used for high blood pressure). The beta blocker would be safest so I would try that first. I'm sorry about your symptoms; I don't know what is causing them, or why being on any opiate would cause them for such a long time.

  • Yes I had RLS before I got addicted to pain killers and whenever I stop it's like I HAVE to keep moving my legs to gain a better rest position.

  • i stopped subo cold turkey after a year or so on it, My body still twitches and writhes when i try to sleep, Its been since Easter, When will this stop please help me.

  • lots of fresh veggie juice and a foot detox spa-works a treat with the allnight writhing, taking blood pressure meds. will only makes standing more difficult which makes any excercise impossible..and excercise will excercise your nightly demons

  • Dr. Junig..I recently sought sub treatment- im in my 3rd week: 16,12,now day 1 at 8mg. Was formerly on 45mg roxicodone daily, 3yrs, for pain, never abused it- took as directed/less than prescribed.. It would be an honor & relief to hear back from you..YOUR INFORMATIVE, WITTY VIDEOS WERE A MAJOR INFLUENCE IN MY DECISION TO MAKE THE LEAP TO SUBOXONE!! I have limited resources to continue sub therapy for very long. Trying to wean off asap & to figure out best way to do so..I DO THANK YOU SO MUCH...

  • Thank you Matthew-- best wishes, and I hope things work out.

  • I am 31, I became a heroin addict at age 18...I feel I threw half my life away...I went through a rapid detox to get off methadone maintenence I was on for 4-5 years..For the first time I was opiate free, albeit extremely sick. I had a nalaxone tablet implanted for an extra 3,000 that lasted 3 months...I became afraid once it wore off, and went to my doctor and asked for suboxone...I am only on 4 mg per day, and I don't know how to get off of this...I can't deal with another withdrawl!

  • they can do that?!?! (implant naloxone)? where did they put it?

  • I have seen it implanted near the 'belly-button' on the stomach. The problem is that it doesn't block opiate cravings. It blocks cravings for alcohol, but not for opiates.

  • Thank you very much. I will go ahead with your CD (you say "tapes"(?)). Like you say 40$ is nothing compared to what I spent. One comment. I think the period on Suboxone should be used by the addict to sabotage their legal or illegal connection to get the pills. I did it with my doctors (2). I said I have a problem and the pain is a small problem compared to opiate addiction. Illegal side is a bit complex- tips?. Just my 2 cents.

  • Hi Doc. I am en engineer travel 90% of the time. Addicted to pain pills after ice hockey neck injury. After 2 years of abuse, I went to a doc in Miami Beach to help. I am on 8 Mg suboxone a day, but I dont feel I need to take it (especially when I am in Middle East where there is no drugs :)). Should I still take it? I am also addicted to cocaine (but not doing this now for a month). I am also opiates free for about 30 days. Please let me know.

  • There is usually withdrawal when stopping it, that starts after about 2-3 days. If you are already beyond that, and your mind is not obsessing over using, then stay off; I generally take people off Suboxone if/when the risk of relapse is very very low.

  • hey doc, just curious how usefull/effective is it to taper off an opiate before stopping? assuming one is disciplined enough to do so?

  • I think tapering is fine, if you can do it. I don't see any advantage to going cold turkey and getting sick!

  • i am currently on1mg/day and my doctor and i are trying to work on a tapering schedule. he wants me to try and not dose at least one day a week now. i tried the other day and started feeling very drug sick within a couple of hours of being awake. what drugs should i talk to him about prescribing in order to curb some of the withdrawl effects once i get off completely? the fear is what has kept me from getting off. i've been on suboxone for about a year and half.

  • Clonidine is helpful for withdrawal, but not so much for seizures, which aren't generally a problem with opiate dependence. I like using clonidine for withdrawal-- it does reduce the discomfort by about 50%. But it is very sedating as well.

  • I'm a soldier who returned from Iraq after 15 months (opiod-free) but then almost immediately started taking at least 80mg of Oxycontin to "self-medicate" some of the physical and mental injuries from Iraq. I know myself and what's about to follow so I got myself into a doctor (well, an ARMY doctor) and he put me on 8mg suboxone with no further instructions. He also gave me Naltrexone and said "when you're done with the orange ones, take the other ones." It can't be that easy. Please help!!

  • No-- but let me know if you notice any increase in sweating if you change. I can't say that the gabapentin effect is for sure; but it seems to have been helpful for a few people.

  • Hi Doctor, I am on suboxone 2 mg per day and am currently taking gabapentin as a mood stabilizer, but due to weight gain am considering topamax instead. Do you have an opinion on the use of topamax in this situation? Also, I take adderall xr 20 mg / day for adhd.

  • I haven't tried topomax for the withdrawal, so I can't really say. The adderall will help prevent the fatigue that comes with withdrawal, though.
